A study on Spockās half-Vulcan upbringing! (By: not a scientist at all.)
I may write a character study on this eventually, but itāll be rambling for now.
There are typically two versions of Spockās young behavior that we see in media and fanfiction.
1.) A ātoo emotionalā child in Vulcan standards. (TAS, AOS, Etc.)
2.) An absolutely repressed child that outwardly resembles a āperfectā Vulcan. (TOS, Discovery, etc.)
Neither is really better than the other. That all comes down to personal taste.
But I want to take a quick look into this second option real fast, because it developmentally fascinates me.
When human children develop attachments to their main caretaker, they often seek this adult out physically. They run in crying, or babbling, or trying to gather this parentās attention in a way that will meet their needs.
When said caretaker fulfills these needs by comforting a hurt child, or engaging in their joy, this helps to develop a healthy and secure attachment style.
Vulcans, as we know, are taught to outwardly suppress expression of their emotion, but this is not always necessarily unhealthy in this development. Why? Because they hold a telepathic bond to their caretakers.
When a Vulcan child is in need, they may reach out through their bond and receive comfort without even moving from their spot. They no longer need to seek out this caretaker physically, unless there is a specific reason to.
NOW! Letās talk about Spock!
As a mostly biologically Vulcan child, he would have a telepathic link to his primary caretaker to call upon in these early developmental stages. Unlike a human child, he likely wonāt cry or laugh or scream to get Amandaās attention, by instinct.
The problem is, Amanda is human and canāt fulfill his needs telepathically. He will reach out and receive nothing in way of comfort or interaction. Itās the Vulcan equivalent of a caretaker ignoring Every. Single. Connection. This child attempts to make.
Heās hungry? Mom canāt hear him ask for food. Heās upset? No one will comfort him. Heās happy? Not a single response.
A little insert here, but this is extremely similar to the effects seen in the Still Faced Experiment.
(For those unfamiliar, the mother engages normally with her infant for a period, then suddenly stops completely. She shows no expression or reaction to ANYTHING the infant does, even crying. Eventually, it ends and she comforts the infant, but the childās reaction is clearly distress from the lack of reaction and long term effects can deduced)
Eventually, Spock may realize he needs to physically act in order to get this attention, but thereās no telling how quickly that may happen, or if it happens in a human standard way either.
And once heās taught to suppress his emotions, even that outlet becomes unusable.
Now, this could be partially avoided by Sarek also holding a mental bond with Spock; but if heās often away from home or off world, then he canāt very well provide the same way Amanda would be expected to.
But the nature of Spock and Sarekās relationship also could imply that they may not have a telepathic bond at all. Itās not likely a Vulcan child is born with a bond to the parent who didnāt physically grow them, so why would Spock have a bond to Sarek so early? Especially when Sarek and Amanda seemed to have functioned as a more traditional couple (at least, until Amanda can continue her own career as a teacher).
All this combined would result in a child with a dismissive-avoidant attachment to both parents. He would have to learn to provide for himself much earlier on and not trust his needs to be met by his parents.
In addition, Vulcan society would provide no other fill in for him to cling to. If Sarek and Amanda canāt engage with him emotionally, outside Vulcans certainly wouldnāt. Especially as they ostracize him for being half-human.
So, when Spock meets Jim, who heās made a real attachment to and starts to engage emotionally with, he becomes anxious and would rather go through Kolinahr than risk the identity heās already convinced himself he is.
In an ideal world, both Sarek and Amanda wouldāve created telepathic, two-way, bonds to Spock as quickly as possible after his birth to ensure they can both take care of his needs as he expressed them.
(I also want to say, Sarek and Amanda are not bad people for this! They were simply unprepared for the reality of a half-Vulcan, half-human child and how to provide for his unique needs.)

From future teacher to homeless person š
My story and hope for survivalš

I am Israa Alwan, a young woman who once had big dreams and was ready to achieve them. After years of hard work and study, I finally received my degree in Early Childhood Education. It was an indescribable joy, knowing I was about to start my journey as a teacher, to help shape young minds and walk alongside them in their first steps toward knowledge.

But my dream didnāt last. The war came and turned my life upside down. My home, which was once a safe haven, is now rubble, and I am left with only a few belongings and a shattered bag of dreams. Now, I am without a home, a job, or any sense of security. I move from place to place with my family, searching for a shelter to protect our children and the sick from the cold winter and the scorching summer.

My brother Shadi, who has always been my strength and support, now bears the heavy responsibility of caring for our entire family, doing everything he can to protect us and provide us with the bare essentials, despite the harsh conditionsššš
Today, I reach out to you, driven by a shared humanity, seeking your support to help us survive and find a way out of this life that was forced upon us.

An episode of Star Trek where Spock becomes "100% human" could have been good. As long as you remember the difference between biology and culture. A Spock who has suddenly became human would still have grown up Vulcan and would still follow their practices. He would not suddenly be emotional and he would not be eating meat.
But there are a lot of differences between Vulcans and humans that you could focus on! He could have trouble adapting to how much weaker his body is. Spock rushing into dangerous situations because he is the toughest is so common so now you could have him do that but then be like oh fuck. You could have him not realizing that he need to drink, eat and sleep more and be driving his body to the breaking point. The fact that he suddenly has sweat glands could be super unpleasant and he could overheat. I think he should definitely struggle with no longer being telepathic. Maybe it makes it harder for him to understand other people or maybe it makes it harder for him to understand his own thoughts. There could be stuff about how his eyesight is worse and he is constantly squinting and messing up colors.
There is literally so much that could be done with this concept and I don't think that it is an inherently bad one. I just don't think the way to do it is to make it so Spock is a complete different person who has no idea how Vulcans work (and needs to be taught what Vulcans are like???) and no control over his emotions. And I definitely don't think it is the right call to make the crew like Spock more when he is human.
Like wise an episode about how the rest of the crew are suddenly Vulcan could be good but it looks like it will fall into the same trap. A human who just suddenly turned into a Vulcan would not have the cultural history and upbringing to act like the Vulcans we normally see. They would not know how to control their emotions or telepathy. They would still be acting like humans. If anything a human turned Vulcan should be incredibly destructive.

it's one of my favorite things too! and i wrote it :)

I find it adorable how in SNW it's apparent that spock gets invited to girls' night out frequently, and he just sits there with them at the bar with his glass of luke warm water listening to them tell stories he absolutely doesn't understand, but he seems to enjoy being there nonetheless.
And it is also like a cute little continuety thing with TOS that tells us why he's so comfortable and friendly with Uhura, playing the lyre as she sings and allowing her to flirt with him in a friendly way.
