on amok time again: they really did "spock experiences primal alien mating drive and murder fuck ritual," and didn't even play with "and this is an excuse to see our prim and proper mr spock get sensual with a lady!". like he expends ALL of his hot dominating fantasy uncontrollable lust rage energy ON KIRK. they wrote that and had ONE chance to make spock have any scandalous, carnal housewife jerk off material romance they wanted with any sexy space woman in the universe, and they chose kirk. when he does interact with a woman he throws a soup at her

“But I am not human. I am only-” “Spock,” Jim interrupted impatiently, “you want to know something?” Spock watched as Jim knelt beside him. “Everyone’s human,” Jim said. “You insult me.” Spock turned away. “Only human,” Jim insisted gently. “Racist,” Spock murmured, his gaze fixed on the ceiling, but Jim saw the glimmer in his eye. “Vulcan,” Jim countered. He held out his hand. “Come on. I need you.” Spock hesitated, then, very deliberately, took Jim’s hand.

"A Rose By Any Other Name"

"A rose by any other name...would smell as sweet" is the well known phrase from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, roughly meaning something's essence or true nature isn't defined by its name, and even if it were called something else, it would still be the same thing; essentially, a label doesn't change the reality of something. Of course you can't smell a galaxy. But, looking at this you are probably not thinking about the violent universe surrounding the tidal distortions from this galactic interaction. You are more likely thinking of the shape😊
This image is featured on the NASA APOD site for January 9, 2025
The 273rd entry in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies (published in 1966) is often referred to as the "rose galaxy" or "cosmic rose". Arp 273 is a pair of interacting galaxies, 300 million light years away in the constellation Andromeda. The larger of the spiral galaxies, known as UGC 1810, is about five times more massive than the smaller galaxy. (The Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies (UGC) is a catalogue of 12,921 galaxies visible from the northern hemisphere. It was first published in 1973). The larger companion has a disc that is tidally distorted into a rose-like shape by the gravitational pull of the smaller galaxy below it, known as UGC 1813. The smaller galaxy shows distinct signs of active star formation at its nucleus, and it is thought that the smaller galaxy has actually passed through the larger. (Wikipedia)
This was a fairly challenging target for what was kind of a first light for the 16" telescope equipment upgrade. Both camera and focuser were replaced which was discussed in an earlier post. Arp 273 is barely 2 arcmin in apparent size and is quite dim, close to magnitude 14. The image scale here is 0.56 arcsec per pixel. This may be the most distant object I have imaged to date! At 300 million light years from Earth, the light from Arp 273 left the galaxy about 60 million light years before the dinosaurs first appeared here on Earth!

Where is it? At the time of this posting, in the Northern Hemisphere, Arp 273 is directly overhead about an hour after sunset in the constellation Andromeda (blue circle and arrow). The numbers at the bottom of this graphic refer to the magnitudes of the stars pictured (black dots). The lower the number the brighter. So for example Venus has an apparent magnitude of around -4 at its' brightest. Magnitude is a logarithmic scale. Each magnitude is around 2.5 times brighter or dimmer than the previous. Arp 273, at magnitude 14 approximately, is therefore about 15 million times dimmer than Venus! That's pretty dim!
Thanks for reading!
