FIRE IN FRANKENSTEIN: LOVE AND HATE, AN ESSAY

(We'll be calling The Creature Adam in order to simplify it, also this text is translated from spanish so sorry if it sounds wonky. I LOVE this book so much.)

The first time Adam discovers fire, he rejoices in its warmth, and in that joy he puts his hands in it, quickly withdrawing them when he feels the (unknown) pain of being burned, and thinks: "How strange that the same cause can have such different effects." For me, this moment is key to understanding his feelings toward his "creator" and, in general, his metamorphosis from a being full of love to one full of hate.

Fire reappears when, after feeling betrayed and abandoned (as he had felt during his "birth") by the De Lanceys, he sets fire to the house. Adam describes this as the first time he has truly felt hatred and states that the house had previously "stirred up deep feelings" (of love) in him. In the face of disappointment, he replaces his deep feeling of love with an equally deep feeling: hatred. And this is reflected in the fire, which can produce both warmth and pain. This metamorphosis from a heart filled with love to one filled with hate is later evident when Adam rejoices in discovering that "He, too, is capable of producing pain" (toward others), whereas before he sought to help others.

By breaking this bond, he realizes that the only human being on earth who can give him even a shred of affection or compassion is Victor himself, his creator, even though he knows Victor loathes and hates him. Adam believes Victor is in debt with him for giving him the gift of life: he approaches Victor hoping for the only warmth he can ever receive from another being, but Victor pushes him away and insults him, filling him with pain. In one scene, Adam even reaches out his hands to him, and Victor violently pushes them away, somewhat resembling the first scene with the fire. Adam makes it clear that, realizing that love and affection are not something he can receive from anyone, he prefers to receive fear and hatred instead. With this in mind, he takes revenge on Victor and revels in causing him hatred. But when his original heart, filled with love, reappears, he is disgusted by his actions and pities Victor, redirecting that hatred toward himself instead. His nature is one of love, but circumstances cause him to disguise himself with a heart of hate.

This shell of hatred returns to possess him due to his ego, and he continues his revenge on Victor, but he doesn't seek to kill him, as he has killed others. In fact, he claims to like the fact that Victor chooses to live on. He incites Victor to constantly pursue him, ensuring that his hatred is fueled, promising a "final meeting" that never seems to come. Why? Because the death of either of them would mean the end of their "relationship." Adam prefers Victor to hate him and pursue him, rather than be indifferent and leave him alone, allowing Victor to find happiness while abandoning him. He likes being pursued, even if it's with hatred, because it's the opposite of being abandoned, as he has been since his creation. This is why he cries when Victor dies, even though it's almost directly his fault. When Victor dies, the hatred he held for him returns to its original destination: Adam himself. Fire appears for the last time in Adam's suicide, setting himself on fire as he did before with the house he once loved and then hated, representing his ego that led him to commit atrocities and also his self-loathing.

I am reading Frankenstein as a summer assignment

Am I the only one seeing shipping potential between Victor and Henry (edit: no I'm not)

(As I was reading I got confused why the book kept switching between Henry and Clerval when referring to the same person but one search told me Clerval was his last name 🤦‍♂️ Either it said it earlier in the book and I forgot about it or I am stupid)
