I need y'all to understand how thoroughly this is underselling it. If I wrote this incident into a made-for-TV movie, even a telenovella, the starring villain would feel overdone. Also be in need of a handlebar mustache to twirl around his fingers as he tied the buxom young woman to the railroad tracks.

Obviously the need for the order is no laughing matter, but the details themselves... *chef's kiss*

I mean.... "A federal judge in the Southern District of Texas had already blocked their removal—but the government sought to evade this order by busing the migrants into the Northern District of Texas, where the restraining order would not apply."

Further: "Obviously, giving Spanish speakers a barebones “notice” in English that they will be deported does not comply with this mandate. But when the migrants’ attorneys sought court intervention, the Justice Department responded as it so often does these days: by lying."

And finally: "it acted with startling speed—so quickly, in fact, that it published the order before Alito could finish writing his dissent; he was forced to note only that a “statement” would “follow.”"

I've read a lot of these news stories in recent weeks, too many really, and let me tell you, this is the judicial equivalent of "Aw, hell naw." As it deserved.

Getting out of art block

Setting: Midnight. Laguna Beach. The ocean murmurs in the distance. A bottle of wine is nearly empty, two glasses sit on the wooden deck table. The breeze is soft, warm. Under the soft porch light, Karine at 38 finds herself face to face with Karine at 43. Time folds in, just for one night

Karine (38) [smiling, swirling her wine]: So… I’m still drinking the same Chardonnay five years from now? Guess I’m more loyal than I thought. Karine (43) [laughs]: You are. But now, we read wine notes before opening a bottle — and only open the second one if we actually like the people around us. Growth, baby. Karine (38): Are you trying to say I open wine too recklessly? Karine (43): I’m saying you live boldly. Remember that Christmas when you flew to Iceland alone to see the Northern Lights? Everyone thought you were nuts, and you just said, “I’m not waiting for someone to show up. I’ll go anyway.” Karine (38) [softly]: It was freezing. I almost cried trying to unzip my coat. But… yeah. When the lights showed up, it felt like I completed something sacred. Karine (43): You did. Not just a trip — you kept a promise to yourself. [They sit in silence for a few seconds. The waves crash, quietly.] Karine (38) [quietly]: Sometimes I wonder… what if I grow old alone? Karine (43): I used to wonder that too. Then I learned: the difference between loneliness and freedom… is one honest heart — your own. And you’ve already got that. Karine (38) [eyeing her future self]: Have you been reading self-help books? Karine (43) [laughs]: Yes. We also journal now, take three-day silent hikes in the Sierras, and turn our phone off on Sundays. You’ll roll your eyes at first, but you’ll love it. Karine (38) [grinning, a little drunk]: You sound suspiciously like a woman who just finished writing a memoir called “Windswept.” Karine (43): Ha! Well, you might write one someday. And spoiler — it’s actually good. Karine (38): Will I find love? Karine (43) [gently]: Yes. Not the kind you’ve been waiting for — the kind that walks in quietly, doesn’t try to fix you, doesn’t demand anything loud. He’ll just look at you and say, “I’m here.” And you’ll say, “It’s good that you came.” That’ll be enough. Karine (38) [blinking, raising her glass]: To the future me. And to whoever finds us along the way. Karine (43) [clinks glasses]: To the woman who made me possible. [They sip. The ocean hums in the background. A warm silence settles in.]
