“isn’t she just the cutest?” she asked, motioning to the small puppy asleep in her lap. for the past few weeks, katie had been fostering the young pup. a smile formed on her lips as she looked down at the small puppy. despite being a foster mom for it, she was already tempted to adopt her. “I rescued her a month ago. you should have seen her then. poor thing didn’t look too good.” it broke her heart to say when she rescued the puppy. “when i got her, i named her buttons. i mean she does look like a buttons to me.”

                    “ well ,   hello   miss   buttons .   aren’t   you   absolutely   the   cutest ? ”   esther   crouched   down   to   gently   pet   the   puppy ,   the   corners   of   her   lips   turning   upward .   the   puppy   let   out   the   softest   whine   as   it   yawned ,   her   lip   instantly   jutting   out   into   an   affectionate   pout .   “   cute   as   a   BUTTON .   you   truly   picked   the   right   name   for   her .   and   i’m guessing   she’s   been   a   complete   angel   since   you’ve   rescued   her ?   none   of   that   extreme   puppy   energy ? ”   she   asked ,   knowing   that   her   own   dog   had   this   NEVER – ending   energy   when   esther   first   took   her   home .

                   ❛    it’s  not  a  crime  if  you  don’t  get  caught   !   ❜   minseok  wiggled  his  brows  toward  the  other  &  quite  frankly ,  at  this  point ,  minseok  had  no  clear  idea  of  what  he  was  either  saying  or  doing .  taking  out  a  pair  of  severely  tangled  headphones  who  had  been  temporarly  fixed  in  several  places  with  washitape ,  the  curly - haired  boy  let  a  cheesy  and  broad  smile  erupt  on  his  lips .          ❛    i  might  have  downloaded  this  illegally ,  but ,  in  my  defense ,   was  bored ,  so  i learned  how  to  play  this  dumb  song  .   .   .    ❜  he  continued ,  offering  the  other  the  other  headphone  before  filling  the  silence  with  an  awful  noise  that  happened  to  be  his  cover  of  vengaboy ’ s  boom  boom  boom . 

                    esther   feigned   quite   the   serious   look   until   she   cracked   a   smile   and   laughed   at   her   companion .   “ are   you   kidding   me ?   who   am   i , ”   she   started ,   DRAMATICALLY   putting   her   hand   over   her   heart ,   “ to   judge   you   for   downloading   something   ...   illegally . ”   she   lowered   her   head ,   whispering   the   last   word   with   a   mischievous   grin   stretching   across   her   lips .   she   put   the   slightly   torn   up   earbud   into   ear ,   bopping   her   head   along   to   the   beat   as   her   grin   widened .   “ this   is   great ?! ”   she   said   a   bit   too   loud .   “ I   WANNA   GO   BOOM   BOOM ! ”   esther    sang   out   loud ,   throwing   her   hand   up   obnoxiously .   “ y’know ,   you   have   a   bright   future ,   kid ! ”

Fate had played its hand and hit them with a spell of rain just as they’d chosen to walk the pier at Santa Monica beach.  “ Hey, ” Gabriel said brightly, so inappropriate for the weather. It was like another world underneath this canopy; something of the breed that only lived for a couple days before dying.Overhead, Pacific Park’s roller coaster rattled across its tracks, and the Ferris Wheel’s flashing lights brightened the darkening sky. Although the pier was never completely abandoned, it seemed less crowded than usual today. “ Have you heard of Robert Doisneau? ” he asked, delaying an escape by clutching to the other’s arm and bumping shoulders. Gabriel wanted to stay. Puddles formed in the sand, shallow mirrors along the beach reflecting blue clouds touched by the red grace of sunset. His heart seized at the prospect of taking a million pictures once this downpour had let up—barring that the company he’d brought with was willing to brave the elements, of course. He huffed a laugh and stuck his hand out far enough from cover to catch raindrops.  “ This reminds me of one of his photographs. Right? With the rain and the pier and you and I in the middle of it all – kind of like a moment. “

                    she   lifted   her   head   up   to   the   sky ,   a   soft   huff   passing   through   her   pouty   lips   as   her   body   visibly   slouched   in   utter   disappointment .   all   she   wanted   to   do   was   to   have   a   nice   day   off   and   here   it   was   ––   RAINING .   with   her   thoughts   already   turning   as   gray   as   the   sky ,   her   company   had   chirped   up ,   causing   her   to   shake   off   her   grimace .   “ unfortunately ,   i   haven’t . ”   her   eyes   softened   as   she   look   at   him .   she   offered   him   a   small   grin ,   nodding   her   head   as   they   looked   over   at   the   scene   ahead   of   them .   drops   of   water   gently   plopping   down   on   their   shoulders   and   the   tops   of   their   head .   “ i   guess   beauty   can   be   found   in   practically   anything   if   you   look   at   it   properly . ”   esther   let   out   a   sigh ,   taking   in   their   surroundings   gratefully .   it   was   still   a   wonderful   way   to   spend   her   day   off   ( and   thankfully   she   wasn’t   left   at   home ) .   “ do   you   want   to   stay   a   while ?   rather   than   heading   back   home   and   staying   in ?   just   promise   me   that   we’ll   go   get   something   warm   to   eat . ”

BACKGROUND .

esther    yeo   is   the   second   and   middle   child   to   anna   and   leon   yeo .   her   parents   are   both   second   generation   immigrants .   their   parents ,   esther’s   grandparents ,   had   moved   to   northern   virginia   in   1966 .   leon’s   parents   had   leon   the   year   before   they   moved   to   the   east   coast .   while   anna   was   born   two   years   later   in   washington ,   d.c.   the   chois   later   moved   to   the   suburbs   of   centreville ,   virginia .   later   the   two   would   meet   at   a   church   youth   retreat   when   they   were   both   in   high   school .   and   the   rest   was   history .   anna   and   leon   became   high   school   sweethearts .   they   also   stayed   together   regardless   of   the   distance   from   when   they   decided   to   attend   different   universities .

fast   forward   to   1995   ––   esther   was   born   in   the   same   hospital   as   her   older   sibling   and   where   her   mother   worked .   she   lived   the   typical   suburban   lifestyle   not   too   far   from   washington ,   d.c.   the   yeos   lived   in   a   that   four   bedroom   family   home   with   a   white   picket   fence ,   not   too   far   from   the   where   her   parents   grew   up .   the   yeos   followed   a   very   laid back   lifestyle ,   attending   church   every   sunday   and   did   community   work   as   often   as   they   could .   the   yeo   siblings   learned   how   to   play   instruments   of   their   choice ,   and   played   club   sports   since   they   were   in   elementary   school .   esther   chose   soccer ,   which   she   was   gifted   at   but   chose   not   to   play   college   soccer   because   she   wanted   to   focus   on   school .

she   had   lived   such   a   comfortable   life   in   virginia .   almost   to   the   point   where   it   almost   became   a   little   too   mundane   for   her .   she   watched   her   older   sibling   flee   to   the   west   coast ,   begged   for   a   change   of   scenery .   her   parents   watched   and   smiled ,   knowing   that   they   were   the   more   independent   child   between   the   yeo   siblings .   although ,   esther   felt   almost   guilty   for   thinking   about   leaving   her   parents   after   graduating   from   college .   she’d   seen   how   close   her   parents   are   to   their   parents .   she   almost   thought   she   was   going   to   rewrite   her   parents’   story   with   the   boy   that   she   met   at   church .

he   was   her   rock .   kept   her   accountable ,   even   in   college .   they   went   off   to   the   same   university   ––   virginia   commonwealth   university .   went   to   church   together ,   studied   at   the   library   together ,   met   up   for   lunch   as   often   they   could .   they   were   inseparable .   although ,   towards   the   end   of   their   senior   year ,   things   slowly   began   to   be   real   dull   between   the   two .   he   was   busy   with   all   the   student   organizations   he   was   a   part   of .   which ,   at   first   seemed   normal ,   considering   how   he   was   on   the   board   for   a   few   of   them .   but   then   their   usual   hangouts   began   to   lessen   as   the   semester   went   on .   and   the   two   just   ...   sadly   drifted   apart .   graduation   came   by   and   esther   just   needed   to   speak   to   him ,   see   where   his   head   was   at .

“ don’t   you   think   that   we’re   too   young   to   know   what   we   want ? ”   he   asked   her .   and   what   he   meant   was   that ,   isn’t   it   a   bit   archaic   to   want   to   settle   down   when   they   hadn’t   experienced   the   world .   esther   felt   so   confused   and   lost .   just   a   few   months   ago ,   they   spent   christmas   together   and   talked   about   their   plans   for   after   they   graduated .   so   what   changed ?   he   didn’t   want   her   to   feel   so   tied   down   to   him .   he   felt   guilty   that   in   their   whole   college   experience ,   she   was   always   with   him .   as   much   as   he   wanted   to   keep   her   in   his   life ,   he   didn’t   want   to   be   that   selfish .   but   he   didn’t   really   tell   her   that .   esther ,   being   as   patient   as   she   was ,   tried   to   understand   where   he   was   coming   from .   and   that   was   that .   they   moved   back   home   and   it   only   made   her   decision   to   move   out   of   the   state   easier .

and   so ,   after   a   year   of   working   at   inova   and   living   with   her   parents ,   esther   saved   up   enough   money   to   move   out   to   sunny   california   where   her   older   sibling   is .   she   started   working   at   the   children’s   hospital   in   los   angeles .   while   she   started   to   create   her   own   roots   in   the   city ,   she   found   it   hard   to   make   new   friends   at   first .   only   keeping   to   her   co-workers   circles   and   her   sibling’s   friends .   she   kept   being   introduced   to   new   people .   with   the   whirlwind   experience   that   she’s   had   in   the   past   few   months ,   she   began   to   notice   a   few   things   about  ��the   new   chapter   in   her   life .   her   attraction   to   women   became   slightly   more   noticeable   than   when   she   was   in   virginia .   she   confided   to   her   sibling   about   this ,   and   the   first   thing   that   they   did   was   wrap   their   arms   around   her .   it   was   almost   overwhelming   to   admit   that   but   it   is   far   from   her   knowing   if   she   actually   was   bi .
