this book’s quickly becoming an incessant reminder that a two day trip to +Switzerland+ in 2018 not only brings you 36 euro fondue but also alarmingly unwavering loyalty to +Swiss+ design

Week 7 Ate 9 | 02.24
HEY I’m stressed.
Going into capstone I was excited, partially because of my relationship to the topic and partially because I was really ready to finally make something that I could be proud of. However, week 7 is here and I’m pretty ... uninspired ... :( The things I’m making are feeling formulaic, like all of my ideas pertaining to texture and image manipulation and voice are being watered down for the sake of a “pleasant” reading experience. BUT HEY HERE’S THE THING! My topic is anything but pleasant! Young athletes are getting abused and I’m over here like, “mmmm pretty grid :)” Good news is tomorrow I’m meeting with Professor L.K. in an attempt to talk and brainstorm with some fresh eyes. Yes this is a long book so giant gestures can get super distracting, but also I’m a student and this is kind of my last chance to make giant gestures.
so I guess ... good luck charlie

Book Mapping, etc | 02.19
So after talking things over with Chrissi for a bit in class today, my biggest short-term goal as of right now is to book map. I know that I really respond well to drawing things out and getting a general “aerial view” of a project before tackling it digitally (even if that aerial view is subject to extensive editing), so I feel like this is going to give me the peace o’ mind I’m currently longing for. We also talked out my grid approach one more time basically just to clarify what it is this idea of maintaining a hyper-present division of space is actually doing for my project’s overall concept.*
*Mentality behind blocking off the bottom half of my book’s pages is that which pertains the idea of “only seeing half the picture” / “noticing what’s below the surface” / other cliches that 1. make for strong visual gestures and 2. reflect the overarching motivation to bring stories, that previously have been either pushed from consciousness or gone unreported, into the spotlight. Having the more intimate, expose-ish imagery mainly occupy the bottom of the compositions is a move that’s intended to emulate their presence, or lack there of, in the general understanding of the sport’s culture.  Also, as of right now, I’m unsure of how or when breaking this grid is going to be worked into the narrative. I do know however that it does need to happen to steer clear of redundancy and monotony. TBD on that
