125,660 Specimens of Natural History is an art and science exhibition about colonial collections, the environmental transformations they produced, and the legacy of these activities, known as the Anthropocene. The exhibition follows the course of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913), best known for co-discovering the theory of evolution by natural selection. From 1854–62, Wallace traveled the Malay archipelago, documenting the region’s biodiversity and amassing a gigantic collection of specimens for European museums. The exhibition invites artists to retrace, re-appropriate, or reassess the expedition, its documents, and artifacts; 13 Indonesian artists and 11 international artists will examine the mobility of colonial knowledge and the transformations of the landscape these research practices left behind. By presenting newly created contemporary artworks alongside an extensive selection of archival and scientific materials (on loan from the Indonesian Institute of Science/LIPI), the exhibition considers how the mobility of knowledge has transformed the environment of Indonesia, and how trans-cultural collaborative approaches to artistic and scientific practice can address urgent environmental questions.

Squaresolid will be part of 125,660 Specimens of Natural History in the Komunitas Salihara Gallery in August 15 to September 15, 2015. At some point in early 2012, Squaresolid brought up a special topic called "Squarefocus: Tales of The Unforgotten". In this topic, Squaresolid focused on Indonesian Tiger species, specially in compiling related visual documentations on he two extinct sub-species are extinct Javan tiger (Panthera Tigris sondaica) and the Bali tiger (Panthera Tigris balica), as well as the endangered sub-species Sumatran tiger (Panthera Tigris sumatrae). This topic is the based of "Loreng: Kisah dari Jejak Citra Harimau Indonesia" (translate: Loreng: Tales from Indonesian Tiger visual traces), which will be displayed in 125,660 Natural History Specimens exhibition.
As part of this exhibition, I will share some part of the story via social media Squaresolid (tumblr, instagram, twitter and facebook page). This activity has also become an attempt to translate my previous posts that already uploaded using English. I apologise to my friends who followed Squaresolid's instagram and twitter because it has been mixed up with my personal post. After some consideration, I decided to let it remain mixed. Therefore, I kindly ask friends on Instagram and Twitter to "unfollow" this account if the posts on Tigers will be a disturbance and I would like to say thanks to the support of friends in tumblr and Facebook accounts, I will keep these two accounts only for Squaresolid posts.

[squarefocus] Tales of The Unforgotten: Bali Tiger (suspected) in Ringling Bros Circus Act, circa 1915
Referring to the last post, this is another picture that is suspected as a living Bali Tiger in Ringling Bros Circus Act, 1919. Ringling itself is the largest circus company on the late 19′s to early 20′s, with a long reputation on abusing animals such as an execution of a majestic bull Elephant. Looking at the woman on the picture, she is likely to be Rose Flanders Bascom, the first American woman Lion tamer who died on the 1915, which make this picture wasn’t taken on 1919, but before 1915.

[squarefocus] Tales of The Unforgotten: Tiger Skin for Sale in Singapore, 1939
I encountered this photograph when I visited the National Museum of Singapore. The caption of the picture was:
"The girl with pigtails looking on was the daughter of the American who bought rubber in Singapore for the Goodyear Orient Company. This photograph was published in the July 1940 issue of National Geographic.
This picture is interesting as Singapore was and until now is the main port of South East Asia. To see that Tiger skin was being sell in Singapore could explain that it was legal at that moment. There's also high possibilities that Sumatran tiger skin being sold there as it's relatively very close to Singapore. The other fact Goodyear have a rubber plantation in Sumatra in 1920. A documentation of it can be seen in this video: http://youtu.be/8PgQDW9kbUQ

[squarefocus] Tales of The Unforgotten: Tiger Hunt as a decoration, 1959
Tiger hunt was a popular sport for the Colonialists and this decoration is a piece of art to show it. The picture show the tiger hunt was conducted by riding an elephant, which is used in India, not Indonesia. So the tiger is most likely a Bengalese tiger. I would love to see if there's an Indonesian version if there's any.

[squarefocus] Tales of The Unforgotten: Indonesian Tigers in Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, 1919 - 1920
It's easy to identify that the two tigers in the pictures came from Indonesia. The density and size of the tigers are the main reason, Indonesian tigers have many stripes and smaller compare to other tiger sub-species. Unfortunately there are no explanation what sub-species of tiger came with the picture. I checked the Taronga Zoo website, and they have a Sumatran Tiger breeding program. So it's most likely they are Sumatran Tigers sold to the zoo in the past.

[squarefocus] Tales of The Unforgotten: Tiger Tot Is Toast of the Town, US, 1993
One of a pair of tiger cubs, with a playful appearance, lies on a quilt in its den at the National Zoological Park. The cubs were born on June 14, 1993, to Kerinci, a rare Sumatran tiger who came to the Zoo in July 1989 as part of an exchange with the Jakarta (Ragunan Zoological Garden) Zoo in Indonesia
