I’ve been thinking about why tumblr is such a unique cesspool of poorly formed analysis and thinly veiled culty bigotry disguised as social activism and…such a good portion of it is coming from minors/young adults. With very few exceptions, I don’t follow anyone under 20 (or anyone who derives their content mostly from minors) and it cuts out a HUGE amount of this bizarre phenomenon. I seek out older womyn for their insight and knowledge of real-world applications of theory; often I see radfems chanting “go outside” and that’s such a valid point–some of these kids have really never seen the way these communities they’re attempting to police function outside of internet land. I am 21 years old, still a baby by far but I shut up and listen and ask questions and never ever claim to have more of a stake in the conversation than our sister dykes who have marched before us, or the gay men that have seen their friends be taken by the AIDS crisis. My advice to those who are young bystanders to the threats of death and violence against my sisters or who have been lost in the shuffle of third wave feminism: visit the jails, the shelters, the hospitals, the corner where womyn sell their bodies, the projects, the memorials and libraries where our oppression is catalogued… look and listen and learn. The world tells a different story. Listen.
