So, in case you missed: brazilians have elected a fascist who is linked to extermination groups formed by ex militaries who run drug cartels in the slamms of Rio de Janeiro. The leaders of these groups are the prime suspects of the assassination of Marielle Franco, a black, LGBT congresswoman who fought for human rights last year. Today an LGBTQ+ congressman gave up his seat in congress and announced he is leaving the country due to death threats he has been receiving from the same groups and the president and his sons cheered on it on twitter.

If I had one thing to say to all of you is: PLEASE DON'T COME TO BRAZIL

three years ago, carol (2015, dir. todd haynes) was finally released, birthed from the vagina of sappho herself. 

it was created almost 60 years after the book was written, and 20 years after the screenplay was adapted. it was a labour of love and, honest to god, an artistic masterpiece.

i don’t think the stars will ever align again in quite the same way for lesbian cinema. how often can you nail a story, a script, a cast, acting, chemistry, a soundtrack and directing all in one go? not often. rarely. 

but i’m not even that mad. it was unattainably good and deserved all the awards it didn’t get. it was the first film i’d ever watched that was completely devoid of the male gaze.

because, at the heart of it, when you boil it down to its core, it was written by a lesbian for lesbians. and they honoured that completely, beautifully, and with so much integrity.

It reminds me that I need to work harder.

I don’t like that her and Holland’s joy for life and each other reminds me that I need to be a better girlfriend. I don’t like that she’s the kind of person that after a long day of flying and fittings will sit in your hotel room after you believe she has nowhere else to go when in fact she is fully aware that you’ve been stood up and she doesn’t want you to be alone. Just like I didn’t like the dozens upon dozens upon roses with little white poppies intermingled in them mere hours after I put my dog to sleep, whose name happens to be Poppy. So if that is the type of person you want for your icon, then I think you have chosen well.”
