Loneliness is nothing to do with how many people are around you but how many of them understand you. People say I love you all the time. Even when they say, ‘Why didn’t you call me back?’ or ‘He’s an asshole.’ Make sure you’re listening. You will be okay. You will be okay.

His eyes are like tunnels to a world I used to know backwards; a world that, three years later, is a stranger. But maybe, I think, as I look into those tunnels, though it will take a long time, maybe I will know it again. The smile he offers spoons this world; a tentative parenthesis encasing what he might be willing to share. His timid smile is a doorway that no longer remains bolted shut, a doorway I thought would only open the muffled stillness of morning that is not a dream but not yet reality, when the glimpse of bright color behind the door would be enough to pull me out of oblivion, and I awoke longing for more.
