Thinking about Emily dating a single mom. How it doesn’t even occur to her, as your relationship grows, that your daughter would ever be hers. It’s not that she doesn’t want that, of course she does. She puts in the work. She lets you take the reins, introducing the two once the relationship gets its bearings. But once you do she’s pulling out all the stops. She’s bringing her souvenirs that she bought at some airport on a case, she’s getting up to watch cartoons with her while you sleep in on weekends, she’s bringing her a bouquet of flowers along with the ones she bought you. None of it, though, prepares her for the day when she realizes she’s slowly morphed into her mom. The day when the name “Emmy” (a nickname she would have despised coming out of anyone else’s mouth) is switched out for “momma” has tears coming to her eyes before she can even process it. She never could have pictured that there would be a day when this would be hers. A day where she isn’t the girlfriend, she’s a mom.

She keeps it together in the moment. Pushing the tears down and continuing on with the conversation they were having. She thinks maybe it could’ve been a mistake, a slip of the tongue. Regardless she doesn’t want to make a big deal of it, but that night once she’s in bed the tears start to fall because she never realized that she could love like this. Or be loved like this.
