Module 6 Wrap Up
Social media, as we have learned this past week, rests on a spectrum. On one harmful extreme, we see trolling and doxing, while on the other side we see empowerment and the amplification of social issues. It can be easy to burrow yourself in an echo chamber, where you see only the things you want to see. This can be exclusively one media narrative, or no narratives at all, maybe just pictures of friends and family. We have the ability to block, mute, and unfollow. Where is the line between protecting yourself from misinformation while also continuing to have the hard conversations with those who disagree with you? As we continue to see social media evolve, I think this line will become even more complex. In the meantime, here’s to the tweets that spark movements and to the activists who take their work beyond the screen.

"I am really tired of talking about women. We must focus on the men. We must be demanding that the men step forward and take responsibility, whether they think they are the good guy or not. They are not the good guy if they are not speaking out against this, if they are allowing the bullying to continue."
Toni Van Pelt, president of the National Association of Women

In the article “The Power of Black Twitter”, writer Stereo Williams brings up countless examples of news stories that wouldn't be traditionally “newsworthy”, being in the spotlight because of Black Twitter. This is a spot on example of that.
