Why make a silk purse from a sow's ear when you can conjure up one of 'the meals of the year' with mere 'piggy treats'? Jay Rayner licks his chops.
What did our team at SSYNT think??
We expanded the group for this evening, inviting a few special guests, and this proved the perfect venue for a night of great friends, food and wine. It's relaxed, comfortable and the food is perfectly suited for a few rounds of nibbles. Ze Piggy Treats were, indeed, delicious, as was the selection of duck burgers. The foie gras sliders were the highlight for us, with the duck fat fries the perfect complement.
Dessert was a disappointment: the creme brulee was eggy with a slightly inconsistent texture.
Our advice? Grab a group of friends, stick to the savouries and play with the amazing wines.

Opera Tavern has been named by Zagat as one of the best 2011 openings. I knew food quality was going to be outstanding being the sister restaurant to Dehesa, my favourite Spanish restaurant. The unique selling point of Opera tavern is the addition of a charcoal grill that produces divine mini Iberico pork and foie gras burgers.
The burgers were so good, we ordered double...
"Outstanding little burgers. Don't expect to bite a chunk of Foie Gras, it's mixed inside the meat" - Mexicano Wariat

Gary Berry samples a mouthwatering array of American-style diner food in the heart of Soho and discovers a near perfect burger.
Did we like it as much as they did?
"Probably the only good thing about the place was the staff: friendly folks and lots of talent at the door, for those looking.
The food, however, wasn't a highlight. Excess was the theme of the menu: single burgers are doubles, doubles are triples, and the macaroni had six cheeses. The flavour suffered, though, with overcooked, dry meat; even the macaroni and cheese was surprisingly bland.
Our advice? Go for a fun bite with friends pre-night out, keep it simple (the avocado was overripe and the egg greasy), and move on quickly to the rest of the evening's activities. (May we suggest Archer Street?)
Shortly, at £40/head, would not recommend it." - Mexicano Wariat

Just a Burger? Just a burger. Robin, it’s so much more than 'just a burger.' I mean…that first bite—oh, what heaven that first bite is. The bun, like a sesame freckled breast of an angel, resting gently on the ketchup and mustard below, flavours mingling in a seductive pas de deux. And then…a pickle! The most playful little pickle! Then a slice of tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a…a patty of ground beef so exquisite, swirling in your mouth, breaking apart, and combining again in a fugue of sweet and savoury so delightful. This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread, Robin. This is God, speaking to us in food.
