How do you get through the relationship ending that made you feel like your entire soul was breaking? How do you get through the stressful days at work? How do you sit at home alone with your own thoughts about your life and how you want it to be versus how it is? How do you do it? Life?

I am counting my blessing — every single one. I am no longer hating myself for my tears, my sadness, my fears of abandonment and feelings of unworthiness.  I try to recognize that my experiences make me empathetic, open-minded and willing to listen to and help anyone. I could be your friend of many years, or I could be someone you just met on the street. My pain, my struggles, my trauma, my anxiety and my depression lend me the ability to hear your pain, struggles, trauma, anxiety and depression. I feel for you and that incites a desire and drive to help in any way I can.

You share everything in a relationship. If you don't, then you are shortchanging the other person by giving them less of who you are. And in so doing, you block off any chance of them seeing the true you and loving you for who you truly are. When you allow filters in your relationship, when you only treat people like calculated chess pieces that you need to hold back and move to your will, then you never get to enjoy who they truly are: their quirks, interests, their deepest affections, their dreams and most of all, their fears. And while there may be times that you think holding back is best for your relationship, think again because divulging only your defeats and disappointments, you eventually treat the person like a garbage dump. Those who truly love you will always be more than willing to share in your triumphs. That small win in the workplace. Or the conversation with your dad that you put off for an entire year that you finally had an hour ago. Or perhaps that you did something good for someone without expecting anything in return. All or nothing. That's how it is in relationships. The victories and the vanquishments. All of it. That's how much it costs to be in a relationship.
