Super excited to finally be able to share this with you all! The 2023 Afrika burn poster! I had so much fun creating this - partly because I knew I could push colours and play around a bit! The process behind this artwork was quite something- it is actually an etched brass plate, which I patinated, sanded, processed and I then had digitally scanned and then worked on the digital image thereafter. The theme for the 2023 burn 🔥 is space 🌙 💫 🌚 - and considering that a lot of my etched works have a cosmic fee to then already I couldn’t wait to get stuck in! Working with the theme of SPACE, i played with the idea of an alchemical interweaving of the very substance that is at the heart of the earth or, more mystically, of the cosmos. this scene appears to emerge out of a kind of interaction of the basic chemistry that defines matter ... Here is One of my earlier pieces from 2014. “Harmonia” Thought of the day… One of the things that nobody tells you about being an artist is that often when you’ve worked your ass off towards opening a solo show, and the deadline comes and the show opens there is a huge relief and it’s exciting and there’s this hype… but then you have this realisation that you’ve got to go back to your studio and get to work the next day… and sometimes that can be easier said than done. in the past I have had a hard time getting motivated and knowing what direction to head next.. But In moments like this I have found it’s best to be easy on one’s self. Creativity and a state of flow are not things that can be forced into being so I just let it come when it feels like it and I keep myself busy with things that aren’t too serious and remind myself what fun making art really is.
