My controversial (?) take is that I don’t think Spirk ever got together. Sure I’ll draw them kissing but I don’t think they did that. I’m not even convinced they ever realised they were in love with each other. Instead I think it went like this:

what people flagrantly misunderstand about culturally iconic ‘logicians’ like spock and sherlock holmes is that they are fuckinggggg annoying. like you canNOT write for nor adapt either of these characters properly without understanding that they are admirable in many ways, yes, but they are repeatedly and gleefully, ON PURPOSE, fucking massive nuisances to literally every sane individual around them, all the time. they love bothering people, they LOVE it, it makes them SO HAPPY, and THAT, not their brilliance, is what makes them the best. spocks a BITCH

personally i like it when star trek villains make spock do something objectively pretty or emotional, and human witnesses are finally sympathizing with him like Wow Spock Who Knew You Had It In You and then the camera cuts to james t kirk frothing at the mouth lunging for any weapon in reach like HE DOESNT WANT TO BE DOING THAT RELEASE HIM AT ONCEEEEE

Not me suddenly wanting to watch this now (even though I'm still scarred from the episode about Pike, that was traumatising)

Why did nobody tell me that the old age episode is so horrifying? I’m not even a person that’s scared of aging or whatever but something about seeing Kirk yell at people because he’s confused and Spock asking to turn the heat up over and over again is making me tear up. I WAS NOT WARNED

The thing that makes me cry so much is that to me, Jim came to get Spock.

You know how they say that sometimes the elderly see their loved ones before they pass, as if to bring them with them?

That's what it looks like to me, but from the pov of the one who's coming to fetch the other. Jim came to get Spock and bring him home to whatever constitutes as the afterlife in the star trek universe. After the sun sets, Spock will be found, alone, gone.

But he didn't go alone. He's finally not alone.

This is more than Spock and Kirk, "going canon."

It is two characters who were irrevocably influential to science fiction, to fandom, to media at large, getting a beautiful and poetic ending.

This is layered in Star Trek canon, but more than that it is Kirk and Spock reuniting.

Against all the odds in the universe, ours and theirs.

Kirk was dead. Spock was dead in ANOTHER DIMENSION. They died alone and without each other. This was their unbelievably tragic and canon ending UNTIL TODAY.

Now their ending is this.

Reunification, connection, crossing time, space, and reality itself to be together again. Because that is how important they are to one another. Because that is how important they are to Star Trek itself. Because that is how important James Tiberius Kirk and S'chn T'gai Spock are to media at large, Star Trek fans and beyond.

This is monumental to a degree that I truly do not know if people can understand and I will NEVER get over it.
