     mulder shrugged his shoulders at her question, “i don’t know… hanging out?” he felt much too old to be using that phrase and it was much too casual for what they were to each other. they ‘hung out’ when they were younger and before there was anything romantic between them. when things were simpler (or as simple as their lives could be). “i do love our couch dates though. they’re nice.” he bumped into her slightly and gave her a soft smile. 

       ❝ hanging out ? mulder, please, what are we, twelve ? ❞ still, she returned the soft smile, gently nudging him in return. ❝ HONESTLY, i wouldn’t have it... have you... any other way. ❞ a soft blush covered her cheeks. it sounded so girlish, so sentimental, so hopelessly in love. ❝ we’re us. that’s ALWAYS been enough for me. ❞

       ❝ hey, ❞ she breathes, leaning in to give him a gentle kiss on the cheek, ❝ i brought takeout. i thought...MAYBE we could have dinner in tonight. ❞

       dana’s SURPRISED by the invitation, not because she doesn’t think it his style, but rather that he’s willing to take her out for her birthday. it’s a somewhat serious step in a relationship, and she’s touched he’s making the commitment. ❝ i... that sounds amazing, ❞ she said, a smile flickering across her lips, ❝ THANK YOU, walter. ❞

       ❝ tannis... ❞ it still brings tears to her eyes, every time she does it. how often had she fantasized about having a child to make her cards for her birthday ? and HERE SHE IS. she tugs the redhead in for a hug, cradling the back of her head despite the fact tannis is a good six inches taller at this point. ❝ MY MIRACLE GIRL, ❞ she murmurs, ❝ thank you. ❞

       she’s slightly OVERWHELMED, if she’s honest. stella doesn’t necessarily know the angst she and her lack of nameplate have had over the years. it’s not something she talks about, not wanting to be seen as a complainer, forever trying to avoid being ‘one of those girls’. but seeing her name and her title ( her title ! ) emblazoned across the plaque, it actually brings tears to her eyes. ❝ THANK YOU, STELLA, ❞ she chokes out, and in an action that surprises even her, she nearly lunges forward and hugs the blonde tightly. ❝ really, thank you. ❞
