20 important study skills/tips i’ve learned from my professors
1. start studying a week before every quiz/test. seriously.
2. watch youtube videos/ted talks on the topics you are learning about.
3. get lots of sleep! sleep helps you process the day’s events, including what you learned.
4. write out your notes. it’s proven that handwritten notes help you learn better than typed out notes.
5. don’t just read what your professor gives you. find academic journals, books, etc. that correspond with your subjects.
6. read the news! especially in the social sciences/humanities, connecting concepts with current events helps you understand and process more easily.
7. exercise! this doesn’t have to be going on runs or lifting weights, it could even just be going for a 20 minute walk. just get your blood pumping, it’ll help you focus.
8. study at your desk. it may be tempting to study in bed, but your brain connects your bed with sleep, so you’ll get tired more quickly.
9. reviewing notes doesn’t have to be something you sit down and do for an hour. skim through them and test your memory while eating breakfast!
10. expand your study time throughout the day to avoid burnout. for example, rather than studying for 5 hours straight, study for an hour here and there in between your activities.
11. make your notes organized and easy to read, but not distracting. bright colors and flashy notes may seem better, but can sometimes distract from the purpose of the notes.
12. use apps such as quizlet. this way, you can go through definitions while waiting in lines or walking to class.
13. it’s more important to know concepts rather than facts. for example, you should be able to take what you know and apply it to different situations, not just the situation the textbook gives you.
14. just because the professor doesn’t require you to read textbook, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. it helps explain concepts in a different way than your professor, and a lot of times hearing two different explanations for the same concept helps you understand it.
15. read in advance. read the textbook before your professor begins going over the chapter, so when he/she does, you can easily follow what they are saying.
16. do any extra credit work that comes your way. even if you don’t need the extra boost now, you might later.
17. go to class!! if you always skip class and show up at office hours completely lost on the concepts, they’ll laugh in your face. they’ll take you 100x more seriously if you show up.
18. however, if you are sick, take a day off. it’s more beneficial to you in the long run.
19. learn how to say “no”. if you have an 8 am the next day, don’t stay out until midnight with your friends.
20. don’t stress too hard over quizzes. if you expect them to go horribly, they will. you got this.

trying to "study with you" currently...haha. what do you usually do or tell yourself to get started on work? sometimes I find it so hard to get motivated :(
Aw, I’m happy to hear you’re trying to “study with me”! I totally recognize that motivation can be HARD. But the good news is that a body in motion tends to stay in motion, so the difficult part is just getting started. I set my timer to get started. Then I know I only have to work for 25 minutes before my next break. But before that, I gather all my study materials, get comfy (slippers, big sweatshirt), and have a beverage handy. I also check my phone before a big session, so it’s not on my mind anymore. Then I turn off all notifications and put it away out of sight.
If you’re really struggling, try remembering your WHY. Why do you need to get started on work? What are your big goals? How is this a step on the path to making your dreams a reality?

study tips from someone who has already been there
here are a few things i’ve learned along the way. in case you’re asking for credentials, i have an honours bachelors of arts in sociology with a concentration in criminology and am currently in the last year of my second degree in public health. these are some of the most important things i’ve retained over the years in terms of studying/finals/midterms/etc.
start studying early: when i say early, i don’t mean like 2 days before the test. i mean like at least a week before the test. even better, look over your notes after each class for a little bit to get a grasp of what was said.
go to review sessions: if your TA or professor holds them. they usually give away some valuable tidbits about the exam and go over all of the relevant content that you should know.
actually do the readings: it’s a lot easier to do them during the semester than it is the night before the exam. so keep up with them.
use online tools: my favourite for studying is . it works wonders when you have a class that’s heavy in memorization. i usually add all of my terms in and them print out tests to practice. i do this multiple times.
invest in a whiteboard: yes. such a simple tool but oh so effective. whiteboards help you to visualize what is in front of you. mind maps on paper are great but on a whiteboard, even better.
use your friends for help: engage in study groups. believe it or not, there are some people out there who know more about a particular topic than you do. this is effective when you hate the class.
prioritize: try and figure out where you should be devoting the majority of your brain power. coordinate lecture notes with readings and see which content overlaps. this = goldmine.
use office hours: professors do so much more than just stand in front of the class and teach. can’t tell you how many times i’ve gone and sat with my professors and just chatted about what was going on. build rapport. this also helps later on with grad school letters or references.
go to class: just do it.

Did you know? Type O Blood was actually meant to be Type Zero blood, due to the lack of glycoproteins in the red blood cells. It was misread and is now called Type “O” blood. I guess you could call it a typo.

Changed some things in my room and I really love my current desk situation 💛 I‘m feeling very productive currently and I had my last sociology lecture yesterday. I‘m so glad it‘s over because it was my least favorite subject ever :/ today is the last day of uni this semester :’)

The survey will close at 9:00 PM EST on April 2, 2018.
ETA: Please click here for an updated survey!
Hi guys! You were so helpful last April (if you were a follower then) and helped me get over 500 responses to a survey for my Honors Conference project, which I later won; the judges said that what stood out was the fact that I collected data from you. This is much more last minute, but please participate and signal boost if you can. It takes very little time and will help me out a lot, and hopefully make my project stand out from the rest! It is 100% anonymous and I have turned off IP addresses (so I won’t be able to see any information except your responses). Thank you!
