While I agree that the female characters are ignored or disrespected in this fandom, I argue that genderbent male characters shouldn’t be seen as automatic disrespect of the female characters. As a whole, genderbending is meant to be fun, and it’s not necessarily limited to spaces that lack gender diversity.

I haven’t really seen anyone argue that genderbent male characters are “female representation,” but my side of the fandom might be different than yours, I’d like to see examples if you have them. However, I HAVE seen queer people discuss characters like Leon and Chris being gay and/or trans coded and taking that as representation. As we know, Capcom can be really stingy with their confirmation of queer identity. So we take what we can get.

To reiterate my point from before, genderbends aren’t meant to serve as a way to ignore female characters. I don’t think anyone’s trying to see a fem Leon as a replacement for Jill or Claire or what have you. There are a lot of factors that go into why the female characters of RE are treated the way they are in the fandom, but genderbending in this sense shouldn’t be seen as a tool for misogyny.

Just a complaint I have with the language I've been seeing in this fandom.

I understand genderbends. I like them myself as they were one of the things that helped me unlock my identity. However, it was my understanding that genderbends were best utilized in fandoms that were sausage parties. Aka a genderbends best habitat is with media that has an extremely male dominated cast. Resident Evil is very much NOT that kind of franchise.

There is a damn good variety of women in this franchise, and some have multiple appearances where you can get obsessed over them. You also can play as them! It genuinely looks like people are avoiding having to interact at all with these women characters when they decide to genderbend the male leads.
