and he’s always said that
"I'm not trying to die," Neil said. "This is how I stay alive."

Every day Neil woke up and relearned how to breathe.

Leaving meant living, but Neil's way of living was survival, nothing more. It was new names and new places and never looking back. It was packing up and going as soon as he started to feel settled.

"All that time fighting and you never learned how to duck?"
This line. This fucking line. Just sums up Andrew as a person. And the fact that it came from Neil is so perfect to me.
Andrew grew up throwing punches because going on the offensive was a better, more reliable option than the defensive. Those in power did nothing to protect him, so he chose to keep as wide of a circle around him as possible. At every stage, though, he made CERTAIN that nobody would follow his footsteps. There would be no other kids, no 'perfect set,' and no more beatings, even if he had to burn all his bridges, past present and future, to ensure it. In the most bitter, stubborn and self sacrificial way, Andrew fought to protect other people from his fate.
After going to live with Nicky, he did the same - to an extent that was definitely overboard, but came from the same wound. Such fierce protectiveness landed him with a court order of anti-psychotics - Andrew literally traded his sanity for Nicky's safety.
Then, he traded his talent for Aarons future. His time for Kevin's life. And finally his secrets, the wide circle of walls he'd built around himself, for Neil's honesty.
Fundamentally, Andrew is a selfless person. He sacrifices all sorts of parts of himself for the needs of others. He doesn't show up whatsoever for the small stuff but when it matters he comes in swinging.
Of course he never learnt to duck. Andrew learnt long ago that there's no point in self-defense. He tried once and it failed miserably - and continued to fail over and over again. No, Andrew fights for what he has left; what he has to lose. That does not include himself. He is only a bargaining chip.
Frankly, to him, fighting and ducking might be the same thing.

"Why does Roland think you're tying me down?”

“I didn't think I was a personal problem. You hate me, remember?"
"Every inch of you," Andrew said. "That doesn't mean I wouldn't blow you.”

“So are you completely off-limits or are there any safe zones?"
"What are you hoping for, coordinates?"
"I'm hoping to know where the lines are before I cross them," Neil said, "but I'm open to drawing a map on you if you want to loan me a marker. That's not a bad idea.”
