Deep Analytical Dive into the career tributes names

Fuck you Suzanne Collins because I had to sit and stare at the wall after this one. (Yes this is fic research but hell yeah imma share that shit with y’all.)

Glimmer Belcourt: I feel like Career names are pretty self explanatory but I find it interesting that her last name, Belcourt, means beautiful. Everything about her, right down to her own name, means beautiful- and I feel like it’s quite symbolic for how beauty is almost prized.

Marvel Sanford: Again, quite self explanatory- marvel as in marvellous, a miracle. But for me, his last name is a stretch. It means, across the sandy ford, and rivers symbolise the journey of life and growth- reflecting his desire to win and how the glory is what he’s been wanting his whole life.

Clove Kentwell: Now, I think the District 2 names are far more interesting. Clove means ‘A Nail and Spice’ and it represents strength- which definitely fits into Clove. But her last name quite literally translates to ‘a water source in Kent’ or at least that’s what Google tells me. But if we look deeper into that, a water source symbolises creation, transformation, and purification as well as being deep and fluid- which shows her ability to adapt consistently.

Cato Hadley: To me, his name is arguably the most interesting. His first name means Wise; Pure, clean- which is almost beautifully ironic considering he’s not necessarily wise. But he’s not pure nor clean considering the blood on his hands. Of course Brutal, Bloody Cato’s name is a juxtaposition of his upbringing and character. And Hadley means Field Of Heathers (hence why heathers are a big theme in my fic) but they symbolise Good luck, Protection and Admiration. Good luck. Even though the odds were in his favour, he still lost. Protection. Like the suit of armour in the games that failed to save him from the Mutts that tore him apart. And Admiration, for the boy who always admired everything the games stood for.
