Several people think that Ariel's change from a mermaid to a human was only a matter of replacing the fish's bottom with human legs. And so, Ursula's contract was unfair. But in the original classic, the difference between the two beings is much vast. Mermaids did not have souls and turned into foam upon death. Ariel's transformation is hence, not just a matter of legs but of crossing the line of mortality by getting an immortal soul. Don't let Disney's child-friendly version fool you. Ariel would now have an afterlife while all her sisters and other merfolk would just dissolve into the ocean. Ursula did not ask for much after all.
