it's sad to see how scared Magnifico made Asha and Star look when they are normally such strong characters

I dislike the idea that Magnifico is not wrong for keeping the wishes because "the citizens knew what they were singing up for" did they though?
Tumblr media
The intro makes it seem like good people get their wishes granted, that that is what Magnifico does, but Ashas grandfather appears to be a lovely person yet Magnifico refuses to grant his wish because he thinks there is a possibility that the wish itself could threaten his kingdom (or start a "rebellious mob", imo it sounded like he was scared it could threaten HIM because why would the people rebel against a good ruler?) Anyways... the whole problem is that in his words, Magnifico desides what everyone deserves, even though he's deciding based on things other than their character, which is what the intro implies is the basis for granting wishes. Also, in this intro you see "protect from harm or ill will any wish given to him" but in his argument with Asha he says "they give their wishes to me and I make it so they forget their worries". Those may seem like the same thing but they're not. The people aren't giving him their wishes because they want to forget, but because they think they will eventually be granted, otherwise, they would just keep them to themselves. It's all about how Magnifico advertises the kingdom and wishes versus how he really treats them. It's about how he doesn't grant wishes based on who is worthy like said but based on self serving reasons. Cuz let's say hypothetically his concern for Sabas wish being dangerous was 100% authentic, he is not open AT ALL to considering that he could be wrong and that hoarding the wishes is not the right solution. As soon as Asha questions him, he goes mask off narcissist control freak. The writing and wording in this movie isn't perfect, but I do think it's pretty clear that Magnifico is similar to a cult leader who falsely advertises himself and his kingdom for his own glory and interest.

annoying wish criticism of the day:
there's no reason to root for Asha returning the wishes since the people of Rosas appear happy in the opening song.
Rebuttal: the only time we see them truly happy is in that song and during wish granting ceremonies. And first let's talk about Welcome To Rosas. It's a song about how in this kingdom you can make your wishes come true, so obviously the scene is gonna show citizens who presumably got their wishes granted and are enjoying their gifts, and even if not all them did, it's a song being sung to make Rosas look appealing to interested immigrants. Whos to say the king and queen didn't tell people to act welcoming and joyous?
Simons whole character is about how giving up his wish made him feel so empty inside he betrayed his friends just to fill that emptiness. When the new immigrants give up their wish in the ceremony, they look uncomfortable but are told by everyone that they did the right thing and would not regret it.
This kind of brainwashy idea that Rosas is a one of a kind place where your dreams come true is sure to silence and confuse those who feel unsure and so the citizens may not be showing that and try to be content with what they have.
I think the film could have done more to emphasize the effects of taken wishes, but I think it's silly to say everyone is happy and not just that they're complacent with the only reality they currently know. Magnifico holding the best parts of their hearts hostage is still enough of a reason to want them returned.

no cuz the way ppl act like the book possessed him or he was some puppet during the last 3rd of the film is so weird all it did was give him magic powers and turn his eyes green like 3 times?
At most it makes his dark desires that he already had stronger and so he acts upon them when maybe before he would restrain himself. But he also has a short temper so who knows honestly.
I noticed that his eyes were green longer at the very end when he was being the most cruel, but other than that he still had his blue eyes during most of his cruelness and unhingery
Like why do people blame his actions on the book when Magnifico is just choosing to be a power hungry abuser cmon now
I've been thinking about this, about the influence the book gives to Magnifico. I really don't think the book will "force" Magnifico to do all that. Especially because, in the scene where he goes to Asha's house, he is acting like he normally does in front of everyone. (In fact this makes me think of another theory, since Magnifico always had that book, what makes us think that he had not already used it? or even in the present, just on a smaller scale…)
Tumblr media
I think using the book is not something that takes over 100% of you, but is more of a deal. Like Dr. Facilier, with his friends on the other side. Especially because in both circumstances, they both know exactly what they are doing, they know the dangers and consequences that can occur, yet they still decide to continue with it. Maybe because they both have this personality that tends to have control and power over everything.
Tumblr media
However, neither the book nor the spirits directly involve themselves in their actions, it's more like a "Okay, we'll give it to you, but you owe us something in return." "And if not, you'll have to pay yourself" because it's powerful magic that can't sustain itself, I guess. Actually, this is a random theory that I thought of suddenly, but still, the point that 'Magnifico didn't do anything wrong because the book was controlling him' falls short, since in that same way, we should think, 'Dr. Facilier didn't do anything wrong because in a way his "friends on the other side" were "controlling" him.
Also, I don't know about the English version, I don't have it yet, but in my language, while Magnifico is doing his spell he says "something like "desires of innocent people"… so yes he definitely knows that what he is doing is wrong, even though at that moment he had yet to delve deeper into dark magic.
Tumblr media
I'll expand this if I find more.
I clarify that this is just more than a theory, I will not go into hate a wish any further, I just want to enjoy the movie… also…
Dr. Facilier and Magnifico could definitely be besties😩 for sure.
