saw a small band - roughly on my level, playing a lot of the same venues to a lot of the same fans - launch a patreon-style subscription service a few days ago and part of their marketing for it was "it's not another fucking Patreon"

in the comments they double down on it, encouraging people (playfully but not ironically) to cancel patreon subscriptions to subscribe to their own subscription service

and like. i know everyone has a patreon. i know it's a meme. it also literally gives tens upon tens of thousands of small artists a means of supporting themselves and focusing on their art full-time.

i'm a big fan of these guys. they're one of my favourite acts from the last five years. but you don't get to take a shit on how annoying patreons are while simultaneously launching something functionally identical to a patreon. it feels wildly self-serving and anti-community for this act that prides themselves on being pro-community and pro-small artist

anyway. not a big deal. just badly judged and a frustrating misstep
