A guide to galactic ships: TIE fighter

buying a ship isn’t nearly as easy and as cheap as it used to be. Heck, back in my day, you used to be able to get a Z-95 Headhunter for well under the MSRP’s sticker price and the dealer would still throw in an extra deflector shield and some proton torpedoes to sweeten the deal. I actually fondly remember the government used to have a scheme called “Credits for Junkers” which paid people to actually trade in their old rocket propulsion starships for the new and more clean and environmentally friendly ion-engine-powered starships. So now most of us aren’t thinking about buying our dream starship, we’re being more careful and pragmatic without economic choices. In economic times like this, it’s all about finding a good economical starship that has good resale value. This way when you decide to sell or upgrade your starfighter, you can minimize your loss. So we’ll be taking a look at the TIE fighter.
Tumblr media
You guys know that I would never take a standard TIE into a dogfight. I hate the solar panel design that gives you massive blindspots, the lack of shields, hyperdrive, and heck, there isn’t even life support on this thing. But when it comes to resale value, it’s not always about performance, instead, you have to look at the market and what individuals are willing to buy and the TIE fighter has a lot of really good features that might attract your more budget buyers You see, TIE fighters are relatively cheap, to begin with at around 60,000 credits each and at around 25,000 credits used so they won’t really break the bank when you purchase one. There are some reasons why the TIE fighter is an extremely smart buy from a resale point of view. First of all, it was one of the mass-produced starfighters in galactic history.
Tumblr media
While other starfighters focus more on performance and features, the designers of the TIE fighter first focused on the manufacturing process and how to build things cheaply. The TIE fighter is an engineering marvel, it has no moving parts and it has a very low maintenance cost. The point is the TIE fighter was extremely reliable and well-built. Sure it was fragile even when compared to an A-wing, but you could still keep a TIE fighter running even decades after the empire collapsed and they stopped manufacturing parts for them. When the New Republic arose, so did a new market for old TIE fighters. You see, you had the centrist faction in the government, they basically supported stronger feral control over the galaxy and they have a really unhealthy nostalgia for Imperial memorabilia so a full-on TIE fighter would fetch you top dollar. So remember guys, resale is all about demand, and with this in mind, I’m sure you’ll be rich in no time.

A guide to galactic ships: The Razor Crest
As economic opportunities dry up for the average individual out there thanks to all of the financial engineering and gambling done by older generations, the prospect of buying and owning a house has become increasingly rare amongst middle-class families. Renting a place costs a larger portion of the average individual’s salary so it is not surprising that people are looking at alternatives now and they’re cutting out that large cost in their life and becoming homeless.
Tumblr media
And so all across the galaxy, there is a growing trend amongst the younger generation of forsaking the usual path of job, mortgage, retirement, and death and just putting their entire life in a starship. Sure, living in a starship is not as cool as having a large and fancy house, but a flying metal box will give you a safe place to sleep and get you to where you need to go next. There’s also something romantic about traveling around inside of your moving house and in a galaxy where there are infinite places to travel and infinite places where you can find a living, making your home into a mobile vehicle is an even better idea. And it’s not just about how fancy and well-equipped these ships are, it’s about the wonderful memories that people make inside of them (or something like that). So I’ll be talking about how the Razor Crest would make one of the best homes in the galaxy.
Tumblr media
The Razor Crest is not really a civilian ship with designated crew quarters and creature comforts, it is a gunship. As a matter of fact, its layout is reminiscent of a Clone Wars-era LAAT gunship, but the limited room inside of the Razor Crest and its sparse interior are not really a big problem for someone like Din Djarin. Din Djarin essentially grew up in a cult known as the Children of the Watch and his personal beliefs involved never taking a helmet off in front of other people so I’m pretty sure he can handle living in what is essentially a large one-bedroom apartment by himself.
Tumblr media
Plus he is kind of a loner so there is plenty of room for one person on the ship and even though there is room for a sleeping compartment behind the cockpit, he usually stores his bounties there. Below deck is where he stores whatever goods he’s shipping and of course, his weapons locker. Unfortunately, the Razor Crest gets destroyed on Tython by a turbo laser but I’m sure Din Djarin will always remember his faithful ship, which was the closest thing to home that he’s ever had.

A guide to galactic ships: VCX-100 (aka "The Ghost")
Humans are not designed to live in a vacuum. We can’t handle extreme temperatures, the lack of oxygen, and the massive amounts of radiation (and of course space whale semen which apparently makes up 25% of the mass of the universe, the more you know).
Tumblr media
This is why space travel is pretty terrifying if you think about it, especially if your ship has no shields, minimal life support on board, and a very thin layer of Transparisteel protecting you from certain death. But that’s a TIE fighter, what actual ships are well designed for space travel you might ask, what ship I would recommend you purchase if say you’re a young family with children and you want to keep them safe while traveling the very dangerous hyperspace lanes. Today we’ll look at the freighter class of starships.
Tumblr media
Freighters are the backbone of the Outer Rim economy, especially on planets that aren’t populated enough to encourage visits from large interstellar cargo ships. Freighters usually come bare-bones from the factory and then each, let’s call them “small business operators” will modify their empty ships with an assortment of weapons attachments, hyperdrive upgrades, secret muggling compartments, heavy armor plating, and of course, some additional shielding. It’s really up to the user to decide what their ship to look like. Popular opinions will most likely point towards the YT-1300 as the safest or best ship in its class but I actually believe that the Millennium Falcon is an aberration. I like the idea of modifying my ship with a bunch of aftermarket parts but that’s also what makes this class of ship so unreliable, and the Millennium Falcon is the poster child of unreliable third-party components and it doesn’t even have an escape pod so minus a point for safety. Instead of choosing the obvious ship in this case, I want to look at another engineering marvel made by Corellian Engineering Corporation, the VCX-100 light freighter.
Tumblr media
At only 43.9 meters, it was on the smaller side for this class of ships and if you’re going to fly around in a civilian ship that is not designed for survival, choosing a ship that is smaller and more nimble is a good idea. The VCX-100 has 2 main engines and 2 secondary engines for redundancy, which is incredibly important in space travel because being stranded in deep space without a hyperdrive is basically a death sentence. It also had several laser cannons onboard, including several point defense turrets along with two torpedo launchers for larger targets. It also added an all-important intact escape pod in case things go south (adding a point for safety) and it is also hyperdrive equipped as well, making this ship one of the safest ships in its class.

A guide to galactic ships: Millenium Falcon
When it comes to purchasing a starship, safety is of paramount importance. That’s because accidents and malfunctions that happen to starships in space often lead to instantaneous death.
Tumblr media
So for those in the market for a cheap ship, the Millennium Falcon is a ship that you definitely want to avoid because of how extremely unreliable it is. Yes, the Millennium Falcon is an unreliable ship, that doesn’t mean however that this isn’t one of the most awesome starships ever built (one of my personal favorites because of how modular it is). These two things can exist in the same vessel. The Millennium Falcon was originally a YT-1300 Stellar Envoy light freighter so it was designed to haul goods and serve as a tugboat for larger containers which is why the cockpit of this ship is offset and there’s a forklift-like area in front of the ship which can be latched onto containers or an escape pod.
Tumblr media
The Corellian Engineering Corporation is very well known for creating very affordable and very modular ships that are very good for commerce (or smuggling). They are famous for having a huge third-party aftermarket selection of parts that one could bolt onto their ships. This is usually where a lot of problems start occurring. Aftermarket parts can sometimes improve the performance of a ship but there are oftentimes reliability issues with these additional parts. For the Millennium Falcon, the largest problem was the hyperdrive system. Han Solo had installed the class 0.5 hyperdrive onto the freighter, one of the fastest in the entire galaxy when it worked.
Tumblr media
But when the hyperdrive motivator started acting up on the Millennium Falcon, it went immediately from a class 0.5 hyperdrive to a class 10, which makes it one of the slowest ships in the entire galaxy. This is bad when you are on the run for smuggling spice.
Tumblr media
Even with the unreliability of the hyperdrive, you can have it fixed or even have it replaced. Overall, this class of ship would be amazing for business or even an everyday ride.

A guide to galactic ships: Y-wing starfighter
Hello everyone, my name is Jeff and I created this guide to help fellow travelers find their most suitable ship and what ships to avoid to navigate the wonders of the galaxy.
Ever since Supreme Chancellor Palpatine federalized the banking system during the last year of the Clone Wars, the galactic republic and the empire after it has been continually printing credits in order to sustain a massive military industrial complex. Of course, this comes at the expense of the average citizen. If you were not lucky, smart, or rich enough to get a placement in one of the imperial academies in the inner rims of the galaxy, you’ll probably have problems earning a decent wage. More importantly, all of that rampant spending has caused hyperinflation, which makes all your saved credits worthless at this point. So what do you do in this situation when you can hardly afford last week's bread prices.
Tumblr media
Introducing the BTL-series Y-wing starfighter.
Tumblr media
The Y-wing is a starfighter bomber produced during the Clone Wars and it is a well-balanced ship with plenty of armor, a large payload, and enough maneuverability and speed so that it didn’t need an escort when going on attack runs. While the BTL Y-wing had mechanical issues, including problems with its finicky engines, the Rebel Alliance and even the Resistance would still fly variants of the BTL-series Y-wing. One of the major reasons for this was that this ship was built in massive numbers and readily available to be taken from the many imperial weapons stockpiles. A brand-new Y-wing is estimated to cost around 135,000 credits and around 65,000 credits if bought used. But honestly, depending on the condition of the Y-wing, you can find one for even cheaper, I’m talking about a few thousand credits. I mean sure, you’ll probably have to fix up some things and replace some parts but you can pull a rebel move and steal one from a junkyard. This ship is hyperdrive-equipped and it even has a rear turret in case you want to bring someone along, the bomb bays can be emptied as well for extra storage. Keep in mind, this starship is officially a military craft, which means a much stronger space frame, better armor, and better power output. Overall, with a lot of armor, a good amount of storage, and with its fast and maneuverable speeds, I'd say the Y-wing in one of the best single to double seated ships in the galaxy.
