I’ve been thinking about the discussion on @cages-boxes-hunters-foxes’s blog about the question of agency in the manuscript and whether or not her experience was above board, and i was reminded of this quote from the tribeca film festival when she was discussing the story in all too well:
There are so many opportunities for you to lose your girlhood and have it taken from you, and it's inevitable that that happens when you become an adult, but the ways in which it can happen when you are, in some ways, still so unformed.

listening to ttpd while i made dinner this evening and i was struck by the difference between the anxiety and dread at the thought of being replaced by the ‘pretty, new thing’ on nothing new vs the acceptance and possibly even relief about the same on clara bow. it’s phenomenally cool that we get to witness her evolution, both professionally and as a person, in real time

i know this is completely hypothetical as all of this is already over. but
1. do you think it would have gone longer and stronger without the backlash from fans?
2. do you think taylor thinks mh's ghosting is a direct result of all the backlash they received from fans (leaving me safe and stranded)?
3. or is it more how he handled the backlash said more of his character to her (a coward claimed he was a lion)?
4. or is it also there's been signs of it being rocky even before the backlash (woah maybe i cant and the whole ttpd song)?
i know no one can truly know this but just based on the album i just want to hear your thoughts
so i think based on the album she feels liek it's pretty unclear but:
yes and no. i think she was coming to her senses either way - part of why she grapples so much with the ghosting is because she was already realizing it was a problem and not going to work, but she didn't get to pull the plug (the bolter, again) and also she was embarrassed.
i think she doesn't really know, but this feels like the safest and also most enraging option, because he was the one who caused the shitstorm and yet he was also the one who ran away from it. makes her feel like she's weak.
i think this is also true. but i think his character in its entirety was the issue, and she knows that.
i think this is true too!!!!!!!

while thank you aimee is a lot of lingering resentment over what kim did to her, “but when i count the scars, there’s a moment of truth: that there wouldn’t be this if there hadn’t been you” is a really mature lyric that i think gives us a lot of perspective on how she views 2016 (and maybe a little bit about her perspective on the sale of her masters). had 2016 never happened, reputation and its tour wouldn’t have ever happened, she wouldn’t have been pushed into healing after the absolute insanity that 1989 was, etc etc etc you all get it

The idea that you’d write a song like fots, and then go home to that same person still in a relationship with them hurts my brain a little bit.
on you’re losing me she’s at least still pleading for the relationship to continue. FOTS just reads like a we broke up song. To write that in 2022 just shows you how broken that relationship was
the thing is though, LTRs don’t end overnight. and i do think it was modified later. but they were both going home to a really broken relationship - they only split like three months after that, the clock was already winding down

i feel like we've gotten shades of this in other albums but i think ttpd is a major evolution in how taylor talks about the power dynamics of her sexual relationships. i can't think of many past lines that so openly acknowledge that some men see her as a sexual trophy.

I feel like the key to understanding that ICDIWABH isn't anti eras or anti fans is that on the very next song she says "I just want to know if rusting my sparkling summer was the goal" like she Wanted to embrace the taylor swift summer of it all she was just Suffering
it’s so funny you send this because i literally was thinking this exact thing this morning. she was so ready to bask in it. and instead she was sad, lonely, and mentally wrecked. good news is that she bounced back really quick and did end up getting to enjoy a lot of it

the fandom: the meaning of a black dog is a way of referring to feelings of depression. The black dog also is a supernatural hellhound originating from English folklore that has also been seen throughout Europe and the Americas. It can also represent hallucinations.
