Why save the children?
Similar to many other societies on campus, Save the Charity aims to ultimately raise awareness on world issues relating to the welfare of children in particular developing nations. As University students, I personally believe there is more to just focusing on our academic studies or adding credit to our resumes so we can prepare ourselves for our future professions.  Correct. These are important but I think it’s also important to broaden our perspectives and actually analyse this world we are currently living in. In order to appreciate our existence, we must first understand what’s happening in the other 99.5% of the world. By doing so, we learn to be grateful of what we have. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the University we go to and even the beds we sleep on.
As young ambitious leaders, we dream big for the unknown future-of the money we’ll make, the jobs we’ll have and the families we’ll create. However, we may not realise that millions of children out there are afraid of even dreaming when they’re lacking in what we call ‘basic welfare’. They fear for no food, no homes, no education and no health support but what they fear the most, is death. These children dream to just live a healthy life with their families.
Save the Children isn’t just all about raising money for these disadvantaged communities, but the society intentionally aims to raise awareness of these disadvantages communities and actually educate UNSW students of what’s happening outside our bubbles. Of course each dollar donated will make a difference but it’s more important for us to recognise the issue we face today in this society. Save the Children has given me the chance to do something for the sake of someone else. It has given me the chance to create hope for these disadvantage children who can possibly be the leaders of their communities. It has given me the chance to encourage these children to dream of their future. It’s about the dedicated effort we commit that makes it so meaningful. Each additional effort and thought can reunite us into a community that can make an actual effect on the world we live in.

Why I believe in Save the Children
The practice of charity is a reflection of our common desire to create change in the world. The focus of Save The Children gives it a special place within this framework, in that specifically helping children grow in safe, healthy and promising environments serves a unique function in changing the world. Our outlook is thus specifically future-oriented, since having a long-term outlook on raising quality of life can only increase the value we give to immediate improvements in desperate communities.
I believe that this work toward a better future has powerful implications for the concept of charity. When people who can be relieved of enormous hardship by a simple donation are given the opportunity to live better lives, our work has meaning for years after it is carried out. This is unmistakable, for example, when we raise money to provide vaccinations for children in Ethiopia, and whole lifespans are changed for the better.
A view to helping individuals in the long-term opens communities to the potential for resultant development over time. The more children we help today, the more empowered adults there will be in these communities in years to come. Cycles of development, in which our assistance can enable vulnerable children today to become leaders and visionaries for their communities in the future, give us hope for sustained progress across disadvantaged societies.
For me, this is the reason why we focus our efforts on the protection and welfare of children. As the fabric of future societies, the interests of children in vulnerable communities are an opportunity like no other to enact true change. This is especially true when our work also has the capacity to provide immediately aid to communities in need. Our efforts to provide emergency shelter, food rations and potable water to communities in Vanuatu and Nepal displaced by natural disasters are recent examples of this.
Our organisation’s decision to focus its efforts on the cause of children in need is justifiable in many ways. Children are often the most vulnerable in society, they are the most difficult to empower and the easiest to overlook. However, this vulnerability also provides the capacity for great change to be enacted through dedicated efforts. This is why I believe in this charity’s specific mission to help children, and why I feel it’s a cause that will have a real and lasting effect on the world.
