Another works from Mike Nelson, what an interesting way to force the viewer to see what you want in a controled manner, It reminds me of Anish Kapoor shooting his cannon through the door frame limiting what the viewer can see but in a much more controled way. I find this an intriguing idea and something I could look at investigating further.

This work from Mike Nelson makes me think of a battle between man made and natural,  battling for the attention. or alternatively something similar to images of Chernobyl, destruction posing as art.

I love this certain part in this short film ‘ You become the player, your body and decisions in the space activate the work itself. You forget your looking at art at times.’ This idea is something I aim to achieve within my own works, however our degree of sucess may be different, he hopes for memory of space, I am hoping to force the viewer to notice details that my work will lead them to during my degree show.

Donald Judd is very interesting when it comes to site specific art. The link between the concrete boxes that are larege and empty in an area which is large and empty is an exciting link between materiality and contextualisation. It is works like this that make me look closer to site specific works and makes me believe that this would be an interesting path to follow, in a location that I feel a connection to.combining all of this would allow me to create work which could be considered a reflection of my inner self. That idea is exciting.

This piece from Carl Andre is largely very similar to achieveing the pricipals of the use of wood I have focussed on lately. the reclaimed wood from a building site has it’s own beauty in terms of pre-existing marks. Carl Andre said that  ‘the wood was better before I cut it than after. I did not improve it in any way.’. This is an idea that I often feel for the works I create, for example the stump I used in my Hive piece was initially intended to be carved, yet how it looked astonished me at how beautiful it was before i touched it, so i left it that way. With this piece of Carl’s he ignored the desire to leave it how he found it and carved into it, according to him this was a bad idea, yet to the world it may have been his best decision, as suggested by it being viewed into the Tate. This makes me wonder wether I should ever listen to new ideas or continue to trust  my gut when creating work, which seems to be working well while creating on site.

This is a good description of the event in literal terms. I found this useful for remembering the exhibition as it was 8 years ago now

At first glance the work of Anish Kapoor would probably be considered almost the opposite of my work. Yet I cannot dismiss that I find his work similar in respect to the use of a corner and distantly similar in the way he controls the way he places the audience and controls what they see. He controls the audience by safty lines and controls what they see through the use of a wall for example of the image in this link. The reason may not be 100% clear as to why he is shooting through the door yet it is very interesting because of this. the mystery is part of the excitement, in the same way I left part of the instalation invisible behind a wall in ‘ A Gift from Storm Dorris’ (Although I did offer a way through to discover it) This play on view and space has become very important in my work and I wish to continue playing with it.

I come across Richard Serra during my solo show, he was mentioned for me to look at because of how similar the ideas behind our works appear to be. I couldn’t help but agree. His work looks like it very much plays with th eideas of space, movement, sclae and shows attempts to control viewers movement within or around the work. Visually however our work is very different he works with more materials than I choose to work with, yet it still holds a very similar feel in the sense of man made objects. I found this image while looking towards a section of history that i find interesting, i found this image on this site http://www.bullfax.com/?q=node-how-29000-tonne-arch-will-finally-contain-chernobyl-pla. I cant help however but to feel a pull which reminds me of some of the work I create. Man made structures being taken over by organic (or organic looking, in the case of the expanding foam) material. This image is very beautiful yet sinnister to look at and i like that play between the two.

This work of Dan Webb looks to be very exciting through the photographs (Taken from: http://www.gregkucera.com/webb.htm). I wish I could have seen this work in person. I find the way that he has allowed a combination of off-cuts and old material combined with the finely carved sculptures that he usually creates a very exciting play upon the control and freedom of the two methods of display. The way that the 3 ‘outside sculptures face inwards towards the central one is also an interesting idea and play with space, it feels as though it brings them into a collection of works, almost attached rather than a collection of work in an exhibition.

This work from Ricky Swallow feels very different to that of the last piece I spoke about, yet it still feels very similar style to that of mine. He combines what appears to be a battle between man made and nature. (Maybe battle is the wrong word? Coalition?) Although the stump section is clearly not natural, it still gives the feel of that, case of pretending, very interesting links and thoughts to consider when thinking about my work.

It’s interesting to see another artist who has created work with childhood memories in mind. My work is based upon my childhood, the bonds I have with carpentry and forests have been central to my work.
His link is the memory of fishing and eating what is shown upon the table for this particular work shown at the top of the page from this link.

Such an interesting person when looking at Site specific work, the use of areas where he walks to create work centralised around walking is very interesting. It would be like me creating work to be viewed in Cannock Chase.

The work of richard Long has become an interesting area of research recently, by looking at his land art in particular I have developed understand and interest in the use of non gallery settings for means of displaying work, the work shown on this link however has been important while looking into the use of recycled material. Although the stones may have been altered there use as art is very interesting to me. They bring nature into the work, although the stones are not there for art, bringing them into an art context succesfully really emphasises the job of the artist to bring their interests into the light of viewers.
I have also been using these links for research about richard long:

Richard Long was the artist who has managed to strongly gain my attention with Land art, however this could become a strong direction to take my work. A way to further the battle of materiality as well as the battle between man made structure and nature.
