@guyrleech @sstranger For two separate replacements, PCRE2 has the concept of "conditional replacement" using the syntax ${1:+match:nomatch} whereby "match" replaces capture groups that participated in the match and "nomatch" those that didn't. Haven't thought through whether nesting can achieve more.
