Study Tips (taken straight from a psychology textbook)
We all know that studying is hard work, and it’s difficult to find ways that work. These tips are for memorization from a psychological standpoint, so they are applicable to any field of study, and are general enough to apply to any person.
Organize
Before you start studying, make sure your information is organized and accurate.
Tips for organizing:
Review your notes routinely and catch errors and ambiguities early. There’s no sense in memorizing inaccurate or incomplete information.
Organize the material in a way that lets you study it effectively. Arrange information, rework material, and give it a structure that will help you to remember it.
Experiment with different organizational techniques. One approach is to use a hierarchy such as an outline. You might create analogies that take advantage of your preexisting schemas (structured knowledge of the world’s workings).
Encode
After you make sure the material is accurate and well-organized, it’s time to memorize it.
Tips for encoding:
Pay attention. Remember that staying focused on one thing at a time is crucial. Avoid divided attention and multitasking.
There are three levels of mental processing- shallow, intermediate, and deep. Process information at an appropriate level. Think about the material meaningfully and process it deeply.
Elaborate (connect to what you already know) on the points to be remembered. Make associations to your life and to other aspects of the material you want to remember.
Use imagery. Devising images to help you remember (such as the mental picture of a computer screen to help you recall the concept of working memory) allows you to “double-encode” the information (double coding is remembering information through both visual and verbal encoding.
Understand that encoding is not simply something that you should do before a test. Instead, encode early and often. During class, while reading, or in discussing issues, take advantage of opportunities to create associations to your course material.
Rehearse
While initially learning material, relate it to your life and attend to examples that help you do so. After class, rehearse the course material over time to solidify it in memory.
Tips for rehearsing:
Rewrite, type, or retype your notes. Some students find this exercise a good form of rehearsal (repetition of information to commit it to long-term memory).
Talk to people about what you have learned and how it is important to real life in order to reinforce memory. You are more likely to remember information over the long term if you understand it and relate it to your world than if you mechanically rehearse and memorize it. Rehearsal works well for information in short-term memory, but when you need to encode, store, and then retrieve information from long-term memory, it is much less efficient. So for most information, understand it, give it meaning, elaborate on it, and personalize it.
Test yourself. It is not enough to look at your notes and think, “Psssh, I know this.” Sometimes recognition (the ability to know that you have learned presented information) instills a false sense of actual knowing. If you look at a definition, and it seems so familiar that you are certain you know it, challenge yourself. What happens when you close the book and try to reconstruct the definition? Check your personal definition with the technical one in the book. How did you do?
While reading and studying, ask yourself questions like “What’s the meaning of what I just read?” “Why is this important?” and “What is an example of the concept I just read about?” When you make a concerted effort to ask yourself questions about what you’ve read or about an activity in class, you expand the number of associations you make with the information you will need to retrieve later.
Treat your brain kindly. If you are genuinely seeking to improve your memory performance, keep in mind that the brain is a physical organ. Perhaps the best way to promote effective memory storage is to make sure that your brain is able to function at maximum capacity. That means resting it, nourishing it by eating well, and keeping it free of mind-altering substances.
Retrieve
How can you best remember the essential information?
Tips for retrieving:
Use retrieval cues (tricks to help you actually recall what you learned). Sit in the same seat where you learned the material. Remember that the exam is full of questions about topics that you have thoughtfully encoded. Some of the questions on the test might help jog your memory for the answers to others.
Sit comfortably, take a deep breath, and stay calm. Bolster your confidence by remembering that research on long-term memory has shown that material that has been committed to memory is there for a very long time- even among those who may experience a moment of panic when the test is handed out.
Memorization is not impossible. Using these tricks should help you, especially in the long run.

Motivation is overrated. No amount of motivation would’ve gotten me through hours of my accounting textbook. No “vision” is enough to keep me awake til the crack of dawn on an essay that I don’t even know if the professor will check. Discipline is what determines how far you go. On those days when your cute little list of #goals and vision of yourself 5 years from now aren’t enough, discipline will pull you out of bed and get you to work. I wish I knew this in high school because I thought I couldn’t work without motivation. I wasted so much time trying to find purpose before I realized that working now, albeit blindly, will ensure that I could chase any purpose I discover in the future. Sure, motivation is crucial, but it’s not consistent. It’s not reliable. You can only rely on yourself and your grit.
