i've been complaining about uni all day, but I am aware of current discourse. so let me just say: yes, 100% everyone including allocishet people should not be shamed for their identity. but you cannot act like jokes by queer people punching up against a historically oppressive and violent society holds the same weight as the reverse.

critiques about "balancing" and "equal number of gay and straight characters" are nitpicking the wording (which, yes, could have been better phrased, but you can still clearly understand what they meant) instead of addressing that crux.

someone being personally annoyed with a sudden influx in non-queer ships is not equivalent to oppression or discrimination or hatred for your identities--or even unreasonable! way more malice has been attributed to their intention than is appropriate, and it's so frustrating to see

have I addressed everything? no. will I say more? entirely possible. but for the love of god, people

frankly, i think that if a teenager (and i'm counting twelve as a teen -- the average age for masturbating for the first time is usually before ten years old (not necessarily in a sexual way, simply in a 'this feels good way' )) wishes to write smut for their own sexual gratification, genuinely because they enjoy it, then that's exactly what they should be doing. sex, and even more so sexual thoughts or art, has no moral value in and of itself*.

when it comes to adults, the nuance there is a bit more muddied, but in my opinion, the most important thing to do is for them to tag appropriately and make sure anyone who wishes to filter it out is able to. i find it much more dangerous to ask for 'credentials' for someone writing a smut fic (age, trauma, history -- all information that can be extremely dangerous to have online, depending on the situation), than to simply let them be, provided that, as always, it's properly warned for.

i've seen discussion about the tags themselves being too descriptive, but in my opinion, that's exactly why they're there -- smut in itself is a vague tag. smut can include heavy making out, depending on how the author views things, and can go towards much heavier and kinkier things. the tags serve the purpose of differenciating between the two, and are descriptive specifically for that reason. while they might be uncomfortable to read, they are also more often than not accompanied by the E rating on ao3, which is almost excluively used for smut fics, and can be easily filtered out, more so than the tags themselves ; and, in the end, reading tags pragmatically stating the contents of the fic will always be preferable to going into a fic unaware.

Confession: I'm kinda disgusted by kotlc smut fics. For starters, its a middle grade series with kids and you're writing SMUT fics about them?? It disgusts me a lot, especially the adult/minor ones. I dont really care too much for the adult/adult (ex; gisela/verspa, fintan/bronte) smut fics, because yk, they're adults, but they're usually not really any of them.

But smut fics on the kotlc crew??? HELL NO if you've written one, like genuinely written a smut fic, like a Sokeefe or Tiana smut, WTF. PLEASE don't talk to me. I love them sososo much, and I will read any fanfic of my otps, but a SMUT fic??????????????? No thanks.

first off, yes, the fic should have been tagged/warned about more appropriately, and that is fully on the author. they should have reiterated the warning, and specified that it was going to include straight up smut. that is fully on them, and something that they should fix in the future.

now, the fact is, that children (especially young teens), are going to want to explore sexual themes (often times without the most subtlety or skill), because it's something that is talked about, something that they're often curious about, and it's something that is ancored in our society as something that people do. let me remind you, a fourteen year old is a freshman in high school. a fourteen year old most likely has already been attracted to someone, and a fourteen year old might very soon be in a relationship with someone where sex is on the table.

fan(fiction) is a safe way for young teenager to explore (their) sexuality freely without risking their wellbeing or someone elses*. it allows them to imagine scenarios that are one step removed from themself, as they might not wish to imagine those situations in first person for a variety of reasons. it allows for a total freedom of experimentation, without being limited by their bodies, their awkwardness, and sometimes, frankly, by the fact that their parents are in the same house and they don't want to experiment on themself in those conditions.

you are entirely in your right to dislike the idea of smut for the kotlc characters. you are entirely within your right to find it grosses you out. you are entirely within your right to click away from the (fan)fic. but disgust is not a moral judgement. it's not wrong for a 12-14 year old to write sexual situations, and it's not wrong for them to write people their own age being in sexual situations -- just the same as it's not wrong to write about those characters committing murder.

*with the caveat that the smut should be advertised as such, to be avoided by those who wish to do so

I feel like this is what pushes me over the edge of rejoining the kotlc fandom. Ive been thinking abt it for a good long while but 1) im fascinated with whatevers happening in there like, socially 2) i want to see how differently i experience things now that im older and also touching grass more heavily 3) i remembered how fun keefe angst/whump was in General

We should get someone in here to do a long form social study of whatever's happening here <- a joke, but I do think the kotlc fandom would be an interesting candidate to study if looking into how joining fandom works, the behavior and learning curves, etc.

Main issues would be the relatively small sample size and the methods of data collection, among other things. But anyway

If you do use this as incentive to join, then welcome back! I think the experience is definitely a little different now, but that's a given. And it's probably going to be different to us in different ways

Also curious to see this keefe angst/whump! i should try dabbling in more angst and whump myself. i just keep writing emotional hurt/comfort fics--which are fun, but every time I'm like. I am doing The Exact Same Thing Again Oh No

Vespera's character entrance is so disturbing and chilling. She immediately starts asking Sophie question after question to figure out how her brain works. She measures a person's worth on how useful and powerful they can be, even leaving Biana alive because "she shows promise". She's so sick and twisted.
