the following prompts were taken from the novel deathless by catherynne m. valente, an american novelist & poet. the novel was loosely based on the tale of koschei the deathless, incorporating other elements of russian mythology, & setting it against the backdrop of the russian revolution. feel free to change the pronouns / prompts as you see fit, but be warned – below the cut, it’s quite long !

DISCLAIMER:  This  theory  was  originally  posited  by  someone  on  the  G.enshin  I.mpact  subreddit.   While  I’ve  taken  the  basic  premise  of  this  theory,  I  will  be  fleshing  it  out  with  my  own  thoughts  and  personal  headcanons.  I  am  not  up-to-date  on  the  game.  The  information  I  talk  about  below  is  pulled  from  her  Wiki  page as of 2022.  So,  I  understand  that  this  theory  is/was  in  all  likelihood  just  that—a  theory,  and  won’t  actually  come  to  fruition  in  the  game,  but  I  like  it  too  much  to  ignore  it  and  I  do  what  I  want.  Originally  posted  on  a  now  archived  blog  in  2022.

Lisa  is  dying.  We  know  from  in-game  information  that  Lisa  was  Sumeru  Academia’s  “most  distinguished  graduate  in  the  last  200  years”  and  that  her  quest  for  knowledge  came  at  a  price  that  ultimately  scared  her  and  made  her  paranoid  enough  to  eventually  leave  and  relegate  herself  to  a  life  of  cataloguing  and  documentation  at  the  Library  in  Mondstadt.  But  several  of  Lisa’s  voicelines  are  very  cryptic  in  nature,  which  left  me  questioning  just  what  exactly  the  “price”  was  for  the  knowledge  Lisa  sought  out.

In  the  voiceline  More  About  Lisa:  V,  she  says  “A  Vision  may  seem  like  a  great  tool,  but  one  day,  the  power  one  accumulates  always  finds  a  way  to  turn  back  on  you.  Should  such  a  day  come  for  me,  so  long  as  you’re  around…  Ah,  never  mind.”  From  Lisa’s  perspective,  it  sounds  like  her  want  for  a  Vision,  and  the  knowledge  and  power  that  came  with  it  clearly  came  with  a  price  she  wasn’t  prepared  for.

The  price  for  that  knowledge  she  sought,  I  believe,  is  her  lifeforce.

There  are  several  reasons  for  this.  While  Lisa  is  lazy  to  a  fault,  I  believe  that  one  of  her  voicelines  illustrates  this  need  to  conserve  energy  for  greater  purposes,  because  what  the  truth  is,  Lisa  is  not  just  low-energy  by  nature,  but  is  losing  her  lifeforce  little  by  little  and  therefore  needs  to  conserve  that  energy.  She  says,  “I’m  not  lazy,  I  just  know  to  save  my  energy  for  when  I  need  it  most.”  While  this  could  be  written  off  as  Lisa’s  general  laziness  and  lack  of  engagement  with  things  she  feels  doesn’t  need  her  concern,  I  think  cryptic  lines  like  this—coupled  with  her  character  traits  and  motifs—are  far  more  indicative  to  a  deeper  meaning.

For  instance,  Lisa’s  Constellation.  Lisa’s  Constellation  is  the  Tempus  Fugit—an  hourglass.  Tempus  Fugit  is  Latin  for  “Time  Flies”  and  an  hourglass  is  often  used  to  symbolise  that  “human  existence  is  fleeting,  and  that  the  ‘sands  of  time’  will  run  out  for  every  human  life.”  While  hourglasses  were  also  used  in  alchemy  to  represent  an  hour,  it  would  make  sense  per  this  theory  that  the  hourglass  mirrors  Lisa’s  own  life  running  out.  Another  thing  to  consider  is  Lisa’s  frequent  creation  and  use  of  Potions.  Perhaps  she  is  attempting  to  create  a  cure  or  slow  the  process  of  dying  down?  While  there’s  no  concrete  evidence  to  support  this  as  of  posting  this,  I  think  it’s  an  interesting  little  tidbit  to  think  about.

Going  into  strictly  personal  headcanons  now,  I  believe  that  Lisa’s  lifeforce  drains  depending  on  the  power  of  magic  used.  The  darker  or  more  powerful  the  magic  is,  the  more  energy  she  uses  and  the  more  her  life  is  drained.  Ultimately,  unless  something  can  be  done  to  reverse  these  effects,  Lisa  will  die  before  her  thirty-fifth  birthday.  This  is  something  she  has  not  told  anyone,  and  keeps  a  very  tight  lid  on.  While  she  doesn’t  want  to  worry  her  friends  and  loved  ones,  this  is  also  for  practical  reasons.  She  believes  there  will  be  a  time  when  it  is  right  to  reveal  the  truth.

            𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐊  𝐈𝐒  𝐁𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐆  𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘  𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐓,  she  thinks.  Sharp  eyes  peer  at  Sampo  from  around  a  corner.  He's  a  good  ten  feet  away,  chatting  it  up  with  Natasha;  but  the  great  leader  of  the  Moles  doesn't  care  about  any  of  that  adult  talk.  She  has  bigger  —  and  more  fun  —  ideas  in  mind.  It's  like  something  out  of  those  old  picture  books  Luka  lets  her  borrow  sometimes.  The  ones  with  all  the  action  and  fighting  and  'wham!',  'pow!',  'punch!'  that  only  someone  like  Hook  could  possibly  appreciate  with  him.  He'd  brought  it  back  from  his  visit  to  the  Luofu,  and  to  say  that  Hook  had  been  single-minded  about  it  since  then  would  have  been  an  understatement.

            That's  what  she  wants  to  be.  That's  what  she  wants  the  Moles  to  be;  a  misfit  group  of  little  vigilantes,  cleaning  the  streets  of  Boulder  Town  one  task  at  a  time.  Hook  creeps  up  slowly  behind  Sampo  and  the  old  witch,  sure  that  Natasha  won't  give  her  away.  She  never  does.  So...  maybe  she's  not  an  old  witch.  At  least  for  today.  As  soon  as  the  doctor  excuses  herself,  it's  Hook's  time  to  strike.

            ❝   RAAAAAAAAHHHHH!   ❞  The  battle  yell  rings  out  and  garners  the  attention  of  several  locals,  but  Hook  isn't  even  paying  attention  to  them.  She's  latched  herself  onto  Sampo's  right  leg  like  a  miniature  Propagation  spawn  and  refuses  to  let  go.  ❝   Surrender  yourself  to  the  Moles,  evil-doer!   ❞

            The  declaration  is  punctuated  by  a  big  ol'  cheesy  grin  upturned  at  him.

            𝐀  𝐆𝐈𝐁𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐒  𝐌𝐎𝐎𝐍  𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐆  𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃,  milking  the  gardens  of  Exalting  Sanctum  in  its  iridescent  glow.  Jinhsi  could  feel  the  oncoming  of  another  headache.  She'd  been  having  them  more  frequently  lately,  and  despite  the  numerous  remedies  provided  from  Luofu  healers,  it  only  seemed  to  temporarily  relieve  the  symptoms  without  getting  straight  to  the  root  of  the  issue.

            She'd  considered  consulting  Lady  Bailu  at  one  point;  but  after  a  talk  with  her  mother,  she  concluded  that  it  would  be  silly  to  burden  the  High  Elder  with  such  a  fickle  thing  as  a  headache.  So,  she  pressed  on,  enduring  even  as  the  pain  ebbed  away  and  came  back  two-fold  like  tides  washing  against  the  shore.

            Jinhsi  would  persevere.  She  had  to.  If  she  could  not  endure  a  meagre  headache,  then  how  could  she  consider  her  life  so  valuable  that  her  parents  were  willing  to  beg  on  their  knees  for  the  help  of  the  previous  High  Elder,  Dan  Feng,  to  save  her  life  as  a  child?  She  would  not  let  such  trivial  matters  disrupt  her  life,  and  more  importantly,  her  work.

            The  buzz  of  excitement  that  permeated  the  Luofu  didn't  exactly  help.  The  flagship  was  always  bustling  with  activity,  but  it  had  been  especially  noisy  in  the  weeks  leading  up  to  the  Luminary  Wardance,  with  more  travellers  —  and  subsequently  more  paperwork  —  than  Jinhsi  was  prepared  for.  Such  was  the  nature  of  an  event  of  this  scale.  As  a  Judge  of  the  Ten-Lords  Commission,  already  Jinhsi  had  been  called  upon  for  everything  from  petty  shoplifting  to  smuggling  illegal  cargo.

            Jinhsi  pressed  her  fingers  against  her  temple,  shaking  away  the  sudden,  throbbing  pain.  Her  unfocused  gaze  lifted  in  time  to  see  Dan  Heng  walking  in  her  direction.  She'd  vaguely  heard  something  about  the  Nameless  returning  for  the  event,  though  she  had  not  expected  to  run  into  any  of  them  so  soon.  Despite  the  pain,  she  offered  him  a  serene  and  welcome  smile.

            ❝   Dan  Heng  —  welcome  back  to  the  Luofu.  Did  your  companions  not  come  along  this  time?   ❞
