Fleetwood Mac: Can't go home again
Fleetwood Mac: Can’t go home again
OF COURSE, Fleetwood Mac is the American Dream. The band’s success story is the stuff of which the mythology of modern day America is made: Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie, down on their luck in the Oulde Country, make the decision to move to the Promised Land. Traveling as far west as possible, these humble immigrants settle on the most advanced technological frontier in the world, Los…

Happy 40th Birthday, Rumours!
As Rumours turns 40, tributes to Fleetwood Mac’s pinnacle work pour in from music critics.
Fleetwood Mac‘s classic 1977 album Rumours turns 40 today! Featuring some of the most recognizable tunes in rock music, Rumours has influenced generations of music listeners, providing the melodic soundtrack to their lives.
One of the album’s most popular tracks is the optimistic “Don’t Stop,” which Bill Clinton famously used as his 1992 presidential campaign song. But it’s the all-too-relatable relationship turmoil — expressed in songs like “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” and “The Chain” — that still connects with audiences 40 years later.
The tributes to Rumours have poured in all week from music journalists, who dissect the album’s enduring appeal.
“It’s an album that has eerie soothing powers when you hear it in the midst of a crisis, which might be why it hits home right now, with our minute-by-minute deluge of apocalyptic news, the rottenest month to be an American since FDR died.” —Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone
“Rumours is a brutal examination of the politics of relationships, personalities, and ambition.” —Jules LeFevre, Faster Louder
“To simply call Rumours a breakup album doesn’t do it justice. Most breakup albums have an end point — some triumph, a reward or promise about how some supposed emotional resilience might pay off. Rumours is an album of continual, slow breaking.” —Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib, MTV
“Was it the drama, musicality, character or celebrity culture which made Rumours so iconic? Likely, all of the above.” —Tom Cameron, Happy

Ken Caillat to buy historic Record Plant
Co-producer of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours sparks effort to buy Sausalito’s historic Record Plant Studio
Forty-one years ago, record producer Ken Caillat loaded his dog in his car and drove from Los Angeles to the Record Plant in Sausalito to work on an album by an up-and-coming band named Fleetwood Mac. The album that came out of four months of intense recording sessions was Rumours, a blockbuster that would go on to sell more than 45 million copies worldwide and earn critical acclaim as one of the greatest pop records of all time.
In recent days and months, Caillat has made that same trip with his dog (not the same one) many times. This time his purpose has been to help form the Marin Music Project, a three-member group that’s on a mission to save the long-shuttered Record Plant as a piece of Marin’s storied rock ’n’ roll history.
The preservation campaign started for him when he held a book signing at the decaying studio in 2015 for his memoir, Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album.
“It was dirty, the wood was flaking off and I thought, ‘I’m gonna wake up one morning and read that it burned down,’” he said. “I’ve seen so many great studios that either burned down or were turned into computer places or real estate offices or coffee shops. I said, ‘I’m going to do everything I can to try and save this place.’”
So he hooked up with Novato marketing consultant Kevin Bartram and Frank Pollifrone, a sports and entertainment marketer from Los Gatos, to launch the Marin Music Project.

Stevie Nicks strikes 'Gold' with latest tour
Stevie Nicks’ first solo tour in four years — the 24 Karat Gold Tour — impacts the latest Hot Tours tally (see list, below), as the trek’s final show from its fall 2016 run ranks at No. 3 on the tally. The show, held on Dec. 18 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., grossed $1.3 million from a sell-out crowd of 14,210.
The new tour supports Nicks’ most recent solo album, 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault, which was released in September 2014. The set debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking Nicks’ sixth solo top 10-charting effort.
The 24 Karat Gold Tour — with The Pretenders on board as the opening act — also topped $1 million in sales at Madison Square Garden in New York City with a sold-out performance on Dec. 1. Revenue from that concert reached $1.5 million with a sold ticket count of 15,167. Final box-office figures have not yet been reported from the entire fall run, but estimated grosses from the Live Nation-produced tour fall in the $25 million range based on box office data from 10 shows reported to Boxscore during the fall.
The 24 Karat Gold Tour launched Oct. 25 in Phoenix and will pick back up after a winter break on Feb. 23 in Reno, Nevada. The tour will continue through April. The Pretenders will remain with the tour through the April finale.
The tour is Nicks’ first solo outing since her In Your Dreams Tour wrapped in September 2012. The following spring, she headed out on the road with her band Fleetwood Mac for the Fleetwood Mac Live tour from April through December 2013. It was followed by another Mac tour, the On With the Show tour (with a returning Christine McVie), from September 2014 through November 2015.

Stevie Nicks honors late manager Howard Kaufman
A reception for the industry veteran drew a rock star-worthy crowd.
A reception for veteran music manager Howard Kaufman, who died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Jan. 19, drew a rock star-worthy crowd to Los Angeles’ Hillcrest Country Club on Jan. 25.
Among the musicians to pay their respects were longtime clients Stevie Nicks, members of Def Leppard (Joe Elliott, Rick Savage) and Aerosmith (Steven Tyler) along with Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood, The Eagles’ Joe Walsh and Poison’s Bret Michaels.
Many industry heavy-hitters were also in attendance, including Irving Azoff and his wife Shelli; CAA head of music Rob Light and agent Mitch Rose; Michael Jackson estate co-executor John Branca; Maverick Management’s Larry Rudolph (Britney Spears); Songwriter Diane Warren; Hertz Lichtenstein & Young attorney Jamie Young; former Capitol chief executives Andy Slater and Phil Quartararo; Universal Music Enterprises CEO Bruce Resnikoff; and PR veterans Mitch Schneider and Marcee Rondon of MSO, and Liz Rosenberg, longtime rep for Kaufman clients Nicks and Chris Isaak, the latter of whom told the Los Angeles Times that Kaufman was “the Fred Astaire of management.”
A graduate of UCLA , Kaufman started out in management working with Chicago while the group was still in its nascent stage. He went on to form Front Line Management with Azoff in 1974. Later, he launched HK Management where he represented and advised the likes of Janet Jackson, Lenny Kravitz and Jimmy Buffett.

Howard Kaufman, manager for the Eagles, Aerosmith and Stevie Nicks, dies at 79
Veteran music manager Howard Kaufman, who guided the careers of the Eagles, Aerosmith and Stevie Nicks and helped pull off some of the mightiest rock ’n’ roll world tours of his day, has died at 79.
Kaufman died Thursday and had continued working until the day before his death, said Craig Fruin, a longtime business associate.
In an industry filled with larger-than-life personalities and supercharged egos, Kaufman was an even-keeled executive who blended an accountant’s mastery of number-crunching with a fatherly sense of rewarding his clients with long careers and sustained success, friends and clients said.
“He wasn’t stereotype Hollywood, at all. He was low-key, non-hype,” singer and sometimes-actor Chris Isaak said Tuesday. “He was that rare little island of reality.”
Over the decades, Kaufman managed or assisted a distinguished stable of musicians and rock acts — the Eagles, Steely Dan, Heart, Janet Jackson, Boston, Boz Scaggs, Three Dog Night, The Go-Go’s, Fiona Apple, Don Henley.
Though long past conventional retirement age, Kaufman continued to handle clients through his management agency, HK Management, including Jimmy Buffett, Aerosmith, Chicago, Lenny Kravitz, Nicks and Isaak.
Isaak said he had a deep admiration for Kaufman’s nearly innate money-management skills.
“You could be at lunch planning a 50-date tour and, off the top of his head, he could tell you how many seats you sold in Kansas City last time, what you could expect this time, what size the venue was, whether it would work and — this was all while he was just passing the bread,” Isaak said. “He was the Fred Astaire of management, so good, you know, you just loved watching him.”
Kaufman graduated from UCLA in 1960, served in the Army and set out on a career as an accountant. In 1969, he became a partner and business manager at Caribou Management, getting his first taste of rock stardom when he worked with Chicago, then still an emerging rock band.
A decade later, he joined Irving Azoff at Front Line Management, one of the dominate forces in entertainment management. Kaufman later bought out Azoff and rebranded the company as HK Management.
In addition to juggling the careers, tour schedules and album releases of top recording artists, he managed or served as a consultant on often extravagant and complex world tours for the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Paul McCartney’s Wings Across America tour in the mid-’70s, when McCartney first began injecting his Beatles standards into his performances.
Kaufman also was involved in the production and music coordination of several films, including “Urban Cowboy” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
Nicks, in an interview Tuesday, said that Kaufman — with his this-is-how-we’re-going-to-do-it attitude — likely kept her from running out of money during her early days with Fleetwood Mac.
“Let’s face it. We were all a little high, we were all a little stupid and without Howard, I’m sure I would have been broke,” Nicks said. “He’d say, ‘You don’t need to have three houses, Stevie. You need to put some of that money away in savings.’ ”
Though wonkish when it came to numbers, Kaufman also was a fierce negotiator.
Nicks said that Kaufman once held her father’s feet to the fire when he balked at paying her usual six-figure guarantee for making a tour stop at a concert venue he owned in the Phoenix area. She said her father later called her to complain.
“I said, ‘Dad, you always told me to have a manager I trusted.’ ” She said that her father eventually relented and that the concert proceeds easily covered the guarantee.
Isaak had similar memories.
“When you’re going to a meeting and everyone has their guns and knives out, take Howard Kaufman,” he said. “The guy just didn’t have a back-down gear.”
Fruin worked with Kaufman for 40 years and said despite his successes and an always-impressive roster of famous clients, his friend remained selfless and grounded.
“His joy was his family, and his reward was helping people succeed,” Fruin said.
Kaufman is survived by his wife, Caroline; son, Brett; daughters Brooke Halsband and Elle Kaufman; and three grandchildren. Steve Marble / Los Angeles Times / Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Stevie on 'Buckingham McVie': 'I'm happy for them'
Stevie Nicks says another Fleetwood Mac album is unlikely: ‘We’re not 40 anymore’
The music icon says the band are more keen to focus on touring
Stevie Nicks says she does not think Fleetwood Mac will make another album together — because they are “not 40” any more.
The singer, 68, believes the band are more likely to focus on touring and doubts they will ever record a follow-up to 2003’s Say You Will.
She said: “If the five of us were to get together to make a record it would take a year, which is what it always takes us.
“It would be a whole year of recording, then press, then rehearsal, and by the time we got back onto the road, it would be heading towards the second year, and I don’t know whether at this time it’s better for us just to do a big tour.”
The band has sold more than 100 million records and reformed with the classic line-up of Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John and Christine McVie and Mick Fleetwood for a world tour, which ended in 2015.
Nicks said: “It’s every single penny we make divided by five, so the expense of making a record, which is huge, and then to get back on tour … we are not 40.
“We have to take that into consideration — how long can we do tours that are three-hour shows? Would you rather spend a year in the studio or get back on the road? I think that the band would choose to tour.”
Nicks, who is focusing on her solo career, is also reluctant to make new music.
She said: “I don’t write as many songs any more because with the internet, the way that kids listen to music, all the streaming, and the fact that if they’re very savvy, if they want to get it and not pay for it, they can.
“It goes against the grain of our whole belief in, ‘You write a song, you record it, and you put it out there and people should buy it’.
“We realise it’s not our world any more and the younger kids don’t look at it like they’re taking from us… we don’t have the impetus to write 20 songs because we know that unless you’re under 20 you’re not going to sell many records.”
She is not involved with the new album by McVie and Buckingham, which is not a Fleetwood Mac record.
She said: “I’m sure it’s going to be great, because Christine is super-inspired. I’m really happy for them.”
On July 9, Nicks will support her old friend Tom Petty with his band The Heartbreakers at Barclaycard Presents British Summer Time in Hyde Park.
She said: “I’m the girl who always wanted to be in his band and he’s always the one who said, ‘No, no girls allowed.’ There’s just no one else I’d rather be on stage with than Tom.”

Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie consider duets album
According to the L.A. Times, Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are planning to release their first…wait for it…duets album! There’s no doubt that Lindsey and Christine have long had musical chemistry. After all, some of their best songs — “Don’t Stop” and “Hold Me” — have been Buckingham/McVie collaborations, not to mention Billboard Top 5 singles and now SiriusXM classic rock radio staples.
But are they serious? Maybe. Stevie has made it clear that she isn’t in a hurry to release another Fleetwood Mac album, arguably residual effects from the contentious 2003 Say You Will sessions, where Stevie and Lindsey bickered like bitter ex’s (cue: their screaming match in Destiny Rules documentary DVD). The rest of the band is clearly restless to get back on the road and probably hoping to support something besides Rumours for the gazillionth time. So now they’re tired of waiting.
But the proposed name of the album, Buckingham McVie, sounds like a little…cheeky…and far too similar to the iconic Buckingham Nicks brand. And will they seriously go down the indie route again, like 2013’s Extended Play. (Warner Bros. Records is unlikely to back a Fleetwood Mac release without Stevie Nicks.) Sounds a little fishy.
With Mick Fleetwood and John McVie still involved in the project, it seems more likely the latest media bombshell is intended to light a fire under Stevie to finally get on board with a legitimate Fleetwood Mac release. It’s a passive-aggressive approach, but it may ultimately get Stevie to declare, “Uh, not over my dead body! Still, with Stevie’s 24 Karat Gold Tour to pick up again this February in the States, with a possible leg in Australia and New Zealand to follow, the dream of another Fleetwood Mac album with the classic 1975 lineup seems to be fading.
Whatever happens, the latest news adds yet another dimension to the crazy Fleetwood Mac story, whether it’s “the-drama-of-the-moment” posturing or going their own way, once again.
Read more about the ambitious project here, here, and here.

Looking out for big, big reissue!
A preview of Rhino Records’ latest reissue project, Fleetwood Mac’s glossy 1987 album Tango in the Night
Later this year, Rhino Records will be reissuing Fleetwood Mac’s 14th studio album Tango in the Night, the latest release in a series of deluxe packages focused on the band’s back catalog (Rumours, Tusk, Mirage). Although details of the reissue are still forthcoming, it is expected to contain the remastered original album; bonus discs of session material and outtakes; new liner notes; and rare period photographs.
On December 8, 2016, Rolling Stone contributing writer David Wild confirmed in a Twitter post that he had written the new liner notes for the reissue project. It remains to be seen which route Wild took in reflecting on the tumultuous Tango in the Night sessions, which were first laid bare in drummer Mick Fleetwood’s revealing 1990 autobiography Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. Those circumstances ultimately led to the departure of key member Lindsey Buckingham and the addition of his replacements, guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito, to support the album’s ensuing world tour. As a band practically defined by its personal dramas, it would almost seem careless to omit or downplay such a critical juncture in the band’s history.
Packed with the radio-friendly singles “Big Love,” “Seven Wonders, “Little Lies,” and “Everywhere,” Tango in the Night attracted a whole new generation of fans and contributed to the Fleetwood Mac’s legacy as one of the most enduring and resilient recording acts in rock history. At the time, MTV networks saturated music-video play with the album’s singles (a grand total of six was released!), which propelled the album to become an international smash. To date, the album has sold more than five million copies in North America and two million overseas.
In 2014, Mike Duquette, founder of the catalog music blog The Second Disc, featured Tango in the Night as a proposed reissue in his column Reissue Theory. In anticipation of the Tango in the Night reissue, we look back on his thoughtful post (including a hypothetical track list) and celebrate the album that marked the return of Fleetwood Mac to the forefront of the vibrant 1987 pop music scene.
Excerpt from ‘Reissue Theory: Fleetwood Mac, Tango in the Night’
Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, where we focus on great albums and the reissues they could someday see. As we welcome one of our favorite ladies in rock back to her famous band, we remember their last album altogether and the pop success it enjoyed.
One of the best pieces of classic rock news to come out of this nascent year is easily the announcement of singer/keyboardist Christine McVie returning to Fleetwood Mac. McVie retired from the band (and touring in general) after the band’s incredibly successful The Dance tour in the late 1990s, leaving singer Stevie Nicks, singer/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham, bassist (and ex-husband) John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood to continue as a quartet, but made two surprise appearances with the band in England last year, later expressing her desire to rejoin the band.
While no official plans have been firmed up (beyond the possibility of a full tour), it certainly provokes one to think of the phenomenal albums the quintet have created – in particular, their final set as a quintet, 1987’s Tango in the Night.

Top 10 Stevie Nicks Moments of 2016
“And a memory is all that is left for you now…” And what memories they were! 2016 was packed with big moments for Stevie Nicks, which likely maxed out the pages of her journals! From releasing new music to appearing on major TV shows to performing sellout concerts across the country, it was another busy and productive year for Stevie. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s relive some of them now…with the occasional sassy commentary…our Top 10 Stevie Nicks Moments of 2016!
10. Fleetwood Mac rocks Vin Scully’s world.
In July, Fleetwood Mac had the opportunity to send off the great Vin Scully with a special concert at the Blue Diamond Gala. Scully, veteran sportscaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers, retired from broadcasting after 67 seasons with the Dodgers’ organization. Fleetwood Mac band members met Scully before the show and later treated him and the star-studded spectacle (Matthew McConaughey, John Mayer, Sylvester Stallone, Arsenio Hall, and Will Forte to name a few) to their recent “On With the Show” concert set list.
The Moment: Stevie dedicated “Landslide” to Scully and joked “We’re right behind you, Mr. Scully” (referring to retirement). The good-humored Scully returned the quip, saying “I wish I could sing with Fleetwood Mac, but I can’t.”
In 1979, Fleetwood Mac famously recorded the music video for the single “Tusk” at Dodger Stadium, alongside the USC Marching Band.

9. Stevie schools Charles Kelley, sings backup on ‘Southern Accents’
In February, Stevie helped kick off Lady Antebellum singer Charles Kelley’s solo career by lending her voice to his cover of Tom Petty’s “Southern Accents.” Stevie naturally jumped at the chance to sing along to her favorite songwriter’s track…and spend a lot of time with a tall, young, handsome, strapping, southern gent (he’s married, Stevie). For Kelley, it was an opportunity to work with a rock legend and understand her creative process. “She was talking about picking takes and how it’s not always about the perfect note, it’s about the emotion, She has a thing and she knows what her thing is. And she does it so well,” Kelley told Rolling Stone back in July.
The Moment: Stevie sings the lyric “There’s a dream I keep having / Where my mama comes to me.” You can’t help but get a wee bit weepy-eyed to think that Stevie was probably thinking about her own mama, the brilliant Barbara Nicks, right up there in heaven.

8. Stevie joins the ‘Stop the Gun Violence’ campaign.
In June, Stevie Nicks added her name to Billboard magazine’s open letter, demanding Congress to pass stricter gun regulations. More than 180 musicians and music executives signed the letter, which appeared in this July 2nd issue of Billboard with a headline that read, “Stop Gun Violence Now.” The letter emerged in response to the June 11th gun violence at an Orlando LGBT nightclub, where a shooter killed 49 people. Stevie addressed the Orlando tragedy in a thoughtful message posted to her official sites.
The Moment: Stevie shared a rare demo of “Touched by an Angel” in memory of the victims.

7. She’s with her!
Stevie briefly stepped into the political arena to voice her support for Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton in this year’s presidential election. “My heart is with Hillary,” she told Us Magazine in September. Having long advocated for more leading women in music, Stevie naturally supported the proposition of Clinton being the first female president. Although her candidate didn’t win the election, Stevie kept things positive and classy, telling the audience at her November 10th show in Charlotte, NC, “Take a deep breath, this is a place of happiness and love.” So obviously, there will be no invitation to sing “Landslide” at Hillary’s inaugural event…Stevie for 2020?
The Moment: When she also told the New York Times, “Of course, I’m for HIllary!”
6. Stevie shines on Ellen, James Corden.
In October, Stevie made two notable appearances on two major talk shows, in advance of her 24 Karat Gold Tour. Stevie gave an exciting preview of the tour on The Late Late Show with James Corden, performing “Leather and Lace,” her 1981 Top 5 duet with Don Henley. She sang it much like the all-girl rendition from 1981’s White Winged Dove Tour. At the end of the performance, the cheeky James Corden immediately bowed to Stevie’s feet and frantically kissed her boots, which had Stevie in stitches. Also in the show, Stevie debuted the newest member of her family, Lily, an adorable baby Yorkie. (Her “life partner” Sulamith passed away earlier this year.)
Earlier in the week, Stevie performed “Edge of Seventeen” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Her voice clear and strong, Stevie delivered a straightforward, polished rendition of the 1981 Bella Donna rock anthem. Stevie has been performing a shorter, less-vocally-taxing rendition of “Edge” for a few years now, conspicuously leaving out the signature growl that could raise the dead. Here it is again, for the nostalgia: “Ooooooohhhhh- ahhhhhhhhhhh-arrgghhhhhhhh-yahhhhhhhhhhhhh-arghhhhhhhhhh-yahhhhhhhhhh-arrrghhhhhhhhhh…yeah!!” Something like that, anyway.
The Moment: Stevie broke into hysterical laughter when James Corden started kissing her boots.

5. Stevie’s got talent!
Stevie continued to reach new audiences by hitting the prime-time TV circuit. Her Season 12 appearance on the September 14th America’s Got Talent (AGT) finale was a ratings winner, with a 49% percent jump in viewership from the previous year’s finale, according to Nielsen ratings. That 12-year-old prodigy Grace VanderWaal probably had something to do with this, too. Stevie performed Fleetwood Mac’s perennial classic “Landslide,” sharing her music with yet another generation, another cross-section of music listeners; even Simon looked impressed.
The Moment: At the end of the performance, AGT host Nick Cannon affirmed to the world that Stevie Nicks is not just a “Rock Goddess” or a “Rock Icon” or the “High Priestess of Rock and Roll” or some other deflecting title, but none other than…THE QUEEN OF ROCK, bitches! Justice has been served.
4. Stevie stuns audiences, jams with School of Rock band.
Stevie crashed the April 26th evening performance of School of Rock musical during the show’s curtain call. The stunned audience gave Stevie a standing ovation when she magically appeared. She then delivered a lively rendition of “Rhiannon,” twirling in long, flowy sleeves, which cast a heavenly spell on the crowd. (There was also a two-drink minimum.) Afterwards, Stevie posed with the band and had nothing but glowing praise for her talented young cast musicians. Stevie’s appearance was part of the Broadway Cares’ Easter Bonnet Competition, an annual fundraiser for HIV/AIDS service organizations, where she performed “Rhiannon” with the little prodigies for guests, who — once again — had no idea she would be there! Weddings, birthday parties, Bar Mitzvahs, the lady does it all!
The Moment: Two standing ovations from regular, non-fanatical people!

3. ‘Brokenhearted,’ ‘My friend is gone’
The Grim Reaper was especially cruel to the music industry in 2016, taking away beloved rock stars — cultural icons to many — far too soon. Notable deaths included David Bowie, Glen Frey, Natalie Cole, George Michael, and Prince, among others, who graced this world with their talent and tunes. Though Stevie’s friendship and “Stand Back” collaboration with Prince are well-documented, she offered both visual and spoken tributes to him during her 24 Karat Gold Tour. Her connection to guitarist Glen Frey dates back to the mid-’70s when she and Frey’s band The Eagles spent key years together in the Southern California rock scene. Stevie reflected on both Glen Frey and Prince’s sudden deaths, sharing moving thoughts about her musical contemporaries on her social media channels.
The Moment: Reading those crushing words…”brokenhearted,” “seeing through my tears,” “my friend is gone.”
2. Deluxe Treament: Bella Donna, The Wild Heart, Mirage
For longtime collectors, it was Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac Christmas, so to speak, when they were treated to a bevy of reissues and deluxe editions throughout the year. Still overjoyed from last December’s incredible Tusk reissue, fans continued to feel the love with the expanded Mirage package released in September. Three words: “Gypsy” Video Version.
But the bigger treat for Stevie Nicks fans was yet to come when news of deluxe releases for both Bella Donna and The Wild Heart dropped. With remastered sound, Bella Donna featured two additional discs; one disc with Bella Donna-era demos and outtakes and the second disc including Stevie’s 1981 Wiltern Theater show in Los Angeles. The Wild Heart featured one additional disc of session material and outtakes, including a rare demo for “Sorcerer.”
The Moment: “Sable on Blond (Alternate Version).” EPIC. Enough said.
Of course, there was an even bigger surprise waiting in the wings…
1. 24 Karat Gold Tour: ‘This is not the same ol’ Stevie Nicks show.’
Stevie’s surprise 24 Karat Gold Tour (accompanied by Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders) was undoubtedly the highlight of the year for most fans. But it wasn’t just any tour, or the “same ol’ Stevie Nicks show,” as Stevie put it. She decided it was finally time to shake up her unchanging concert set list and perform a wider variety of songs from her vast 43-year-career catalog. She did not disappoint, pulling out songs from the “dark, gothic trunk of magical and mystical things.” Among those treasures were beloved album tracks “Bella Donna” and “Wild Heart”; newly re-recorded demos “Starshine” and “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream)”; and the elusive and oldest song in the set list, 1973 track “Crying in the Night.” For casual fans and beer runners, there were familiar favorites, such as “Gypsy,” “Gold Dust Woman,” “Rhiannon” and “Landslide,” to help pass the time. The musical cauldron of variety was a smashing success, as fans and critics alike responded with praise and their pocketbooks: Stevie sold out many shows in key markets, such as Madison Square Garden in New York and The Forum in Los Angeles. For 2017, 20 additional have been added so far to the bill, with an Australian leg in the works.
Top Moments: 1) Consulting her indispensable FitBit; 2) encouraging dreamers to reach out into “The Belladonna Starland” and 3) accidentally dropping the F-bomb at her Washington, D.C. show.

RECAP: Inglewood, CA - The Forum
Scroll down for photos, videos, set list, fan reaction, and full transcripts of Stevie’s stories!
On Sunday night, Stevie Nicks wrapped up the first leg of the 24 Karat Gold Tour, performing at The Forum in Inglewood, CA (near downtown Los Angeles). The show was another sellout. Celebrity sightings included actress Hilary Duff, singer Carly Rae Jepsen, and celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
Due to the extreme weather that the rest of the country has been experiencing, Stevie was relieved to back in Los Angeles.
“Hello Los Angeles! Well, it is so great to be back here. We have been all over the country, Canada…we have been to all the places that are now completely frozen over, and we are so glad to be back in California! She says, I may not be able to talk — it is cold out there!
Continuing to break with convention, Stevie remained chatty with the audience, telling the stories behind the “mystical and magical” songs she had chosen for the tour. Some of the stories were noticeably shorter, with Stevie conceding, “I was told, I have to shorten the stories. My stories are becoming longer than the concert!” The adjustment comes after a scathing review from a Vancouver critic — the only one of the entire tour — who slammed the singer as a “party pooper” for telling “lengthy, egotistical and over-rehearsed anecdotes.” Another Vancouver critic, however, offered a less-agitated perspective — supporting the veteran rock acts well-earned “freedom to explore their vast musical repertoires” and appreciating this rare opportunity to hear those songs performed in concert at this late stage of their careers.
At the end of the show, Stevie told the audience that she would be starting up the tour again in February and also revealed that she may tour in Australia later in the year, though she wasn’t sure. She dedicated ‘Landslide,’ the final song of the evening, to her hard-working stage crew.

“Hello Los Angeles! Well, it is so great to be back here. We have been all over the country, Canada…we have been to all the places that are now completely frozen over, and we are so glad to be back in California! She says, I may not be able to talk — it is cold out there!
The Forum, yay! So this show is not exactly the Stevie Nicks show that you have seen 300,000 times in your lifetime probably, because this time I decided I was going to do something for me, which was dig out some of my old demos that I love, that for whatever reason did not make it onto records, not because they weren’t as good, but because I pulled them, because I wasn’t happy with the concept. So I call all of these songs the songs that went into the black trunk of gothic, mystical songs that were lost forever. Well, I pulled them out and I’m really excited about them. This is our 28th show and we’ve had such a good time because it is different — it’s different — and it’s really fun and it’s really fulfilling for me So anyway, it’s a journey, come with me. Let’s go!”

Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around feat. Chrissie Hynde / Belle Fleur (Cal Vid)
Stevie: We have had the best time on this tour.
Chrissie: It’s all over. I love her.
Stevie: You can hire us two as a duo…parties, birthday parties, Bar Mitzvahs, we can do it. We have laughed ourselves across this country. We have forgotten words, we have giggled, we have looked at each other like, ‘We just didn’t come on here with a brain tonight!’
Chrissie: She gave me that hat.
Stevie: And I did give you that hat. You can only wear the hat and keep it on. You can never take the hat off.
Chrissie: See, I’m on a learning curve. And I’m learning from the queen herself.
Stevie: I gave it to you so you could just take it home and put it on your dining table! So you’re not leaving us, we’ll see you again.
Chrissie: No, we’ll see you soon. And I love you, you know that.
Stevie: “Aww…we’ve really had so much fun.”

“OK, so this next song could have been written by Chrissie Hynde or Stevie Nicks or any girl that’s in a rock and roll band. When I first joined Fleetwood Mac, I was very taken by this one picture, and that was: A) I was a cleaning lady and a waitress and I had a Toyota with no reverse B) Suddenly, I was picked up by a very long, shiny, beautiful, black limousine. This stuck in my head to this day. I’m not crazy about the SUV thing because the limousine is just so grand, and after driving that Toyota with no reverse for five or six years, I was like, ‘Ah!’ But what I realized, when that black car came to pick me up to take me somewhere, it was usually on a tour and that meant that I wasn’t going to be back so if I had a boyfriend, which sometimes I did, sometimes I didn’t. But if I did, I had to basically say, ‘au revoir.’ And I couldn’t say when I would be back because you never know when you go on tour when you’re gonna be back. So I painted this picture in my head, and I wrote this song about it and it’s called ‘Belle Fleur.'”

Wild Heart / Bella Donna (The Scatman)
“Thank you. So I have a little story that goes along with those two songs. First of all, when we did Bella Donna, you have to kind of understand I walked away, and I didn’t…I wasn’t walking away, but that’s how everybody looked at it. I walked away from a very big band to do a solo record, which you know, was not, not greatly applauded by my friends and my band. But I promised them, I made them a promise. Swear to God, I’m not breaking up this band. You don’t have to worry, go on vacation and then I’ll be back. And you’re going on vacation anyway so you won’t even be here. So I said, I’m going to do this record. So when I did it, Bella Donna was very, very successful, and… But what I was afraid of was that everybody would think that it was fluke, and that’s what I was afraid of. And so I knew that I was going to leave Bella Donna because it was a very short tour and run to Paris to do Mirage, and then the second I got to Paris to do Mirage, I could be writing Wild Heart really fast so that the second I got finished with that, I could hit the ground running back to do Wild Heart because I knew that Wild Heart would be the single thing that would prove that Bella Donna wasn’t a fluke if it was successful. And Wild Heart…crazier, more fragmented, drove Jimmy (Iovine) crazy…but nevertheless, a beautiful album, very successful. And for me in my heart of hearts, signified that Bella Donna was not a fluke and neither was my solo career. So I had a little confidence, and I didn’t hurt anybody’s feelings. But the last thing about that story is you might notice I am wearing the original Bella Donna cape, which does not even have a snag. It is perfect, it is exactly the way it was in 1981 when it was made so I’m going to show it to you.
So if my mom was here, she would say to me, ‘Well, Stevie, you made a very good choice of fabric because, look at this, this cost like $2000, and you’ll never have to remake it because it’s made out of silk chiffon, and silk chiffon basically is what they make sails for boats out of. It will never fall apart.’ This is my mother, right? And I’m like, well this is her talking from heaven actually right now, and I’m thinking that she would be so knocked out to see this and think that, well, it really was a good choice. So that’s my little message from my mom. I think we should all invest in silk chiffon.”
Enchanted (The Scatman)
New Orleans
(Lindsey Salls)
Thank you. Well, this next song… It’s way harder singing all the songs, I have to tell you, than…(inaudible). You have no idea. So this song, this is serious, and I wrote this song in 2005. I was sitting in my house in Santa Monica, looking at my beautiful blue calm sea. And all of the sudden, on the news, it started that morning the fact that there was a giant, angry hurricane getting ready to slam into the coast of New Orleans. And so I, as a writer, when stuff like this happens, I’m always writing about it. I don’t necessarily tell people that I’m writing everything that’s going on, but I am, and so I hide those journals away. And so I thought, OK, as a writer, I know this is gonna be bad, so I have to figure a way to write about it, to chronicle it, to archive it, and not have people when they do read it in 10 years, go like, ‘Well, that’s the most depressing thing I’ve ever heard. Why in the world would she write something that was like unhopeful?’ So uplifting is the word that comes to mind. So that’s what I tried to do. I found a really good track that somebody had given me like two years before, brought my cassette-to-cassette recorder out, which is still the best way to record music, and sat there, and over the next two, three days, put this song together and then I put it away. I put it into the dark, gothic trunk of magical, mystical lost songs, and there it stayed. And then in 2010 when I did In Your Dreams, I decided I had the right people, I had Waddy, I had Dave Stewart, I had an amazing team of musicians, and I thought, OK this is the time. Let’s record it. So we did, and it came out so great, and I was so proud of it. We went on the road for two years with that record. We still did not do the song because it just was too sacred and too close. So when we decided to do this tour, I thought, OK, it’s time to like bring this song out and play it for people because it is a celebration now. It has turned into something that I’m very proud of that I hope the people from the city, the specific city, will love always. Anyway, so we gonna do it for you now. This is ‘New Orleans.’
Starshine (The Scatman)
“Thank you. So this next song was written at Tom Petty’s house. And I have been saying every single night that he was living in the Palisades when I wrote this, and I realized that’s totally not true. And I thought, ‘Oh my God, if Tom comes and I say he he was living in the Palisades and he wasn’t living in the Palisades, I’m going to get into so much trouble! So I think he was living in the Valley, which meant it was a long drive for me from Santa Monica to the Valley, but…
So I was going over there, he had a great studio and I had a song. And so I went there and I go to the door with my guitar in a case because I looked much more serious with my guitar in a case. Of course, I don’t play because I had really long nails, but I looked serious. So I come through the door, and he’s like, looks at me and he’s like, I’ve got my huge bag and my guitar, ‘Are you moving in?’ And I’m like, ‘No, just today.’ And I said, I have a song and I think it’s good. So he goes, ‘OK, well, come on. Play it, play it for me.’ So I sat down at the piano and I played it . And he said, ‘That’s a good song, Stevie.’ And he’s not, you know, he doesn’t love everything that you do, so it’s a big deal. So I’m like, ‘Yes! So I said like, ‘Well, can we record it?’ And he said, ‘Yes, we can.’ And The Heartbreakers slowly came straggling in, and the story is really very short because it happened…I think we played it twice. The track was amazing, and I did a good vocal. And had I been doing a record or had Tom been doing a record, it would have gone on one of those records, but we weren’t doing a record, so guess where it went? Into the glass gothic trunk of mislaid and mystical songs, lost forever. So there it stayed until now. And that was probably…1980? So anyway, it’s called ‘Starshine,’ and here it is.”
Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream) (SoCalLiveitLive)
“This is for Prince.”
“There’s a big, long story that goes with that, but I’m not even gonna go there tonight. I’m just going to tell you that he was my friend and that song was written about un-doable relationship of people, and I was Prince’s friend and I’ll always feel that maybe, you know, we…any of us could have done something, and so anyway let’s just leave it up there in the twilight. Thank you.”
Stand Back
(Ben Harris)
Stand Back (SoCalLiveitLive)
“Thank you. So the reason that we put that picture up now is because Prince and I actually wrote a song together even though we didn’t sit in the same room and write it. But the story is that I was driving in the car… I was told, I have to shorten the story. My stories are starting to become longer than the concert. Pretty soon it’s just going to be like a seminar here. So anyway, there is a longer story, but I’m just gonna tell you the immediate story and that is that I was actually driving to Santa Barbara on my honeymoon and this is in like, you know, 1982, and this song came on the radio and my then, one-and-only-husband Kim said, ‘It’s a great song, huh?’ and I’m like, ‘This is a great song.’ And I’m like getting paper and pencil out of my personal things and he goes, ‘What are you doing?’ ‘I’m writing a song to this song,’ and he goes, ‘Well, this is a Prince song. You can’t just go and write a song to his song.’ And I go, ‘Well, yeah, yes i can and I’m doing it.’ So I said, ‘We have to pull over to like a drug store, laughing — no, not driving to get a cassette player! — and have something to take with us to where we were going in Santa Barbara because we have to record this. We have to make a demo before I forget it.
So then we did that, we made a demo, we raced back to LA, went into Sunset Sound recording, and I finally talked to somebody, maybe it was my manager, I don’t remember who but I said, ‘So can we get in touch with Prince? And I know he lives in Minneapolis, but maybe he’s here. Well, of course, he’s not here, he’s in Minneapolis,’ and they said, ‘Well, guess what? He’s here and here’s his number.’ So I called him and I go like, ‘Hello, Prince. Um, this is Stevie Nicks.’ And he’s like, ‘Hello, this is Prince,’ and I go, ‘I know.’ He said, ‘Well, how are you doing? and ‘Well, I’m doing fine, but this is why I’m calling you. So I wrote this song along to your musical track of ‘Little Red Corvette’ and I think you’re really gonna like it, but you may hate it and if you hate it, it is like deleted.’ That word didn’t even exist then. It is erased. And I said like, ‘So you’re in Los Angeles?’ and he said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘Can you come over here to Sunset Sound?’ and he said, ‘OK, I’ll be there in minute,’ and he was. Dressed…more dressed up than me and the girls, so dressed up…in purple.
So he listened to the song, he loved it, and he thought it was very innovative of me and he played guitar, he played synthesizer, he played other keyboards, and he did all this in about an hour and a half and then he was — whoosh — gone! Just gone. And so this song became like, you know a big — that horrible word — single, big single for us and was extremely…became a huge part of my life. And now, it is more of that because now when I sing ‘Stand Back,’ it’s like he is standing right here. And for me that will always be for me, so he’ll always be right here on this stage because I’ll never not do ‘Stand Back’ onstage. And I’ll always be able to whisper in my head, ‘Thank you for that song.’ So that’s our Prince story for ‘Stand Back.'”
Crying in the Night (The Scatman)
“OK, here’s the really funny story. Let’s look at it this way. This song was probably written before Lindsey and I left San Francisco. That would have been 1970. But let’s round it off and say I wrote it in 1973 when Buckingham Nicks came out. So that would be 1973, 1983, 1993, 2003, 2013, 14, 15, 16…43 years! So I just wanna say that if you ever thought that you had a dream and it didn’t come true, the fact that Waddy and I are standing on this stage 43 years later, singing a song that should have been a single, but it never was, for an album that should have been big ’cause it was really good, but never was, and here we are today. So what I want to say to you is, you know, you have a dream, you’re 20, you don’t know what to do. You know, wait ’til you’re 25. Maybe it’s going to happen then. You’re 27…if you’re still looking for that dream, you haven’t found it yet. Your parents are mad you. OK, so like, 32…dream’s not happening yet. It’s in your hands. You’re like, I’m not giving up. 37…nothing. 40…45…here comes the dream, baby! Not quite. 50…55…60…68!
So never give up on your dreams because they are right out there in the ‘Bella Donna Starland.’ Just reach out your little hand and get ’em. It’s always there for you.”
If You Were My Love
“So this next song is one of the other songs I don’t remember who it was written about. But I do remember that I love this song, and it should have been on Bella Donna, but I didn’t like the concept of it. I didn’t like the way it was recorded, and it was all finished and mixed. It’s really hard to walk up to your producer and say, ‘I don’t like it.’ And they’re like, ‘Why didn’t you say something half way through it. ‘Like, I don’t know, but I don’t like it now.’ And so I pulled it because it was right. And I knew someday I could figure it out and make it right. It’s my favorite song. It’s one of my favorite songs to actually sing, because I think that being in this business is really about singing and if more people sang songs like this, it would be good. So anyway, for your listening pleasure, this is called ‘If You Were My Love.'”
(after the song)
“Thank you. That song is just for the joy of singing. I will be back.”
Gold Dust Woman (Steve Isaacs)
Band Introductions (iseethecrystalvision & The Scatman)
“Thank you. So now I’d like to introduce you to my band because, just think about it, if there was no band, it would just be me telling you more stories. It’d be cheap.
So nice Christmas decorations. Did you do that yourself? Can you hear me? Did you do that yourself? He did it. Thaggard. OK. Ladies and gentlemen, on Hammond B3, the best in the world, Mr. Ricky Peterson! On drums, also best in the world, we love him, he’s come back, he goes away, he comes back, on drums, Mr. Scotty Crago!
The grand pianist on the grand piano, the person who is the best balladeer along with me, me and him, we’re the two balladeers of this band, and almost as cheap, just the two of us. What he plays, I feel like I’m playing, and that is like so amazing for an artist. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Darrell Smith on grand piano!
Right in back of Darrell is my friend from Phoenix, Arizona, yes. We come from the same place, and we’ve been hanging out since the middle of the ’90s. We make demos on cassette players. Well, we had an intern, we did. But anyway, we have lots of fun, and we have been in the beginnings of many amazing songs. So I always have to thank you for that because that’s very improtant to me. Thank you, Al. On bass, Al Ortiz, ladies and gentlemen!
Over here, the girls. First of all, you might notice that if you are a diehard Stevie Nicks fan, which you may not be, but if you are, you might notice that instead of a redhead where the blond is, there’s a blond now, and that’s because Lori, my sister-in-law, had to go and be with her daughter who’s having a baby in a couple of weeks. So we thought that was a good excuse, but we had to find somebody to sing for us. So we remembered that we had this amazing singer/friend from the ’80s that sang with us for quite a while. And I said to Sharon, ‘Sharon, what do you think? Let’s call Minnie.’ So we called Minnie and asked her if she would come on this tour, and she said, ‘YES!’ And we’re so happy that she came in without a ripple, and it’s a big job. So thank you, Minnie, you saved our lives. Ladies and gentlemen, on vocals, Miss Marilyn Martin, but we call her Minnie.
Right next to Minnie, my friend Sharon. I have known Sharon since 1978. I met her in Lahaina, Maui, and she was playing at the best bar in Lahaina. And I was there to have dinner and drink and hang out. And there was Sharon singing in this great band and I waited until she was done, and I asked her, ‘So Sharon, if I ever do a solo career, which wasn’t really in the book yet, would you like to be in my, like, Crosby-Stills-and-Nash thing?’ She said like, ‘YES!’ And so basically, two months later, she moved to Los Angeles and we went full speed on getting those Bella Donna songs written, right? So anyway, the really sweet thing about Sharon is though, the next day, I said to her, ‘Well, OK, we’re gonna sing and write and everything, but we don’t have a piano, so we’re acapella. So she said, ‘I’ll get us a piano.’ And so here comes… (A cartoon of Sharon moving the piano from her Treehouse is projected on the screen.) (laughing) Sharon lived in a treehouse. (laughing) She’s getting from (laughing)…the piano out of the treehouse. Seriously, this is the truth, and brought it to my house! Oh, Arlo! Arlo is our little lighting guy who does that. Sometimes, even I am surprised. She did live in a treehouse and it did have an upright grand piano in it. No lie. I ain’t lyin’. Ladies and gentlemen, on vocals and piano delivery, Miss Sharon Celani!
Right next to Sharon is our other guitarist, who is simply fantastic, and plays an amazing guitar, and has an amazing knowledge of the guitar and of all different kinds of music and keeps us laughing all the time. And for that and his brilliance on that instrument, we love him. His name is Carlos Rios, on guitar! Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome him.
You notice I’m hurrying. I’m hurrying because I’ve been told to hurry. I’m not that good at hurrying. We just need another hour.
So OK, over here, this man, you’ve heard a lot about him since the beginning of the show. I met him in 1971. We became really good friends. We have played music ever since, and he’s been my musical director since 1981 when I got my Atlantic deal, with Jimmy and Atlantic. I called Waddy and said will you come and be like the musical director. I don’t even know what a musical director is at that point, but I’m like, I think that sounds good. So he says yes, and we go in and make that record. So he’s been along for the entire ride, and he is the person who makes me feel safe up her because I’m not always brave and courageous. This was a little scary to do this show and to do all these new songs that some of you probably have never heard. So I was nervous about it. And Waddy was just like, ‘You know what? Just do what you want to do, and have fun and feel your heart, I mean, at this point.’ So anyway, he makes this our little house of love. It’s like our little living room at The Forum. And when somebody does that for you, it’s amazing because you are never scared and that is such a great thing. Ladies and gentlemen, musical director, million dollar baby, best friend, Gemini twin…Waddy Wachtel!
That’s really the only time we get to talk. We have that little moment. So, OK, well, I’ll be right back.”
(Steve Gaines)
Edge of Seventeen (prestoff2000)
“Thank you so much, everybody! You’ve been an awesome audience. You have been awesome! And it’s just so great to be back so I thank you so much. Hopefully, we’ll get to see you again. We’re going to go back out in February for like two more months and we’re going to Australia, I think. And so this is like, it’s carrying on. So I’m really excited, and I’m so glad you got to share this with me. So many of you out there are just my really close friends, and all the people, all of you. Even though you don’t know it, you’re my really close friends, too. So thank you so much. You have just been awesome!”
Rhiannon (The Scatman)
“That darned, old Rhiannon. You know, we can’t rid of her. She like puts on her black wings and flies in and has been in every show on every stage I’ve ever been on, ever since 1975. And every once in while I will say, ‘So maybe we could not do Rhiannon this time.’ And this is the reaction that I get, (loud gasp!). So I don’t say that very often. People are like, ‘What?!’ So anyway, that was her. Now she’s gone.
So before we go into this last song, this is our 28th show, I want to thank our amazing crew because, as marvelous as the lighting is all done by our amazing lighting people and the sound that is done by our amazing sound people, the crew makes sure that one of those things don’t fall on my head. That’s really important if you think about it. Can you feel safe down here or not? So I want the crew to know that I know how hard you work every single day, every single night to put this together and make it safe up here for us. And Arlo, lighting, you’re just like…the graphics for Sharon in her treehouse like…you get like a small raise. Small, but nevertheless, a raise. And just everybody who has made this tour so fantastic. You just can’t name all the people. They’re all amazing. So thank you to them, and I would like to take this moment to dedicate this song to my crew, my lighting people, my sound people, and all the people who care so much about us and keep us safe here every night. This is ‘Landslide’.”

Review: Stevie Nicks opens a ‘gothic trunk’ of lost songs at the Forum Stevie Nicks brought her usual assortment of accessories to the Forum on Sunday night, including a tambourine festooned with glittering streamers and a dark-blue garment she described as “the original ‘Bella Donna’ cape.’” Unchanged since she started wearing it around the time of her debut solo album in 1981, the cape cost $2,000, she said, and was made of silk chiffon — the same material used to create ships’ sails, according to Nicks. “It’ll never fall apart,” she added. —Mikael Wood / LA Times (Read the full review here.)
Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde are timeless at The Forum While 2016 has seen more than its fair share of loss in the music world (David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Prince, Merle Haggard, Sharon Jones, Sir George Martin and Leonard Cohen for starters), two of classic rock’s most celebrated women showcased their distinguished legacies in a sold-out concert at the Forum in Inglewood on Sunday. —Robert Kinsler / OC Register (Read the full review here.)

Nicks’ latest outing was an ideal thematic fit for the Park Theater’s debut: The tour is named after her latest album, “24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault,” a collection of previously unreleased songs from throughout Nicks’ career, some of which spanned back four decades. For most of these tunes, Nicks explained their origins, creating a storyteller vibe that lent a casual intimacy to the evening. —Jason Bracelin / Las Vegas Review-Journal (Read the full review here.)
“Nicks explained that she designed her latest solo tour to excavate deeper cuts from her catalog, and she did just that Saturday night, at one point reeling off six-consecutive non-charting songs between Fleetwood Mac classic “Gypsy” and synthy solo favorite “Stand Back.” —Spencer Patterson / Las Vegas Weekly (Read the full review here.)

RECAP: San Jose, CA - SAP Center
Scroll down for photos and fan reaction. Check back soon for videos, reviews, and more transcripts of Stevie’s stories!
On Wednesday night, Stevie Nicks performed at SAP Center in San Jose, CA — the 26th show of the 24 Karat Gold Tour.
Stevie has a rich history in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she attended high school and college. Stevie dedicated the show to her many friends who were in the San Jose audience, such as her first boyfriend David Young and her “best guy friend ever” Bob Fogle.
Despite living in the area for seven years as a young adult, Stevie was surprised and slightly embarrassed to learn how close to the Pacific Ocean she once lived. She shared a funny story about seeing the ocean for the first time from “a skyscraper” earlier in the day. “I said to my assistant, ‘Is that the ocean?’ And she goes, ‘Yes, it is.’ How is that possible? I have been writing about getting back to the ocean since I was 15 and a 1/2 (when Stevie moved to the Bay Area), and I had no idea that the ocean was just over the top of those buildings. Can you believe it? I could have been living by the ocean the entire time I lived here! So anyway, that is only your story.”

“Last but not least, I would like to dedicate this entire show to all my friends that are here tonight — my very first boyfriend, his name is David Young, is here; my best guy friend ever, his name is Bob Fogle, is here. I’m sure there’s a lot of my friends who I don’t even know that are here, but they’re here. And so I just wanted to dedicate this whole thing to all those people that were actually there when we were putting this whole thing together in 1970 and ’69 and ’68. I don’t think we could have done it without all you guys, we wouldn’t had as much fun. So, and lastly, but last, but not…but not leastly — new word! — take care of yourselves and be good to yourselves and just remember, you and I will, if you’re 30, talk to your 60-year-old self about how you want to be when you’re 60 and how you want to feel because it’s important, because when you get to be my age, you’ll still care — I guarantee you. So stay out of the sun, eat good food, be well, enjoy the world, and don’t forget your dream is on. Thank you very much. Thank you.”
