I really get no comfort out of these kinds of sentiments anymore. I mean, there's nothing inherently wrong with it. In fact, it's good to illustrate how many famous creators didn't get their first hit or begin their magnum opus until further on in life when people these days act like your life is over if you didn't "make it" in your 20s. Yeah, you'd (probably) still have plenty of time to make your art, so don't think it's too late to start! That is a good message! Under normal circumstances. Sadly though, I find no relevance in what a creator born before the 20th century was doing at 45. He lived a completely different life in a completely different time. The comparison is moot. Yes, he DID have plenty of time left at 45. But, will I? Will any of us? I'm 34 now, will I even make it to 45 at the rate things are going? So I'll be blunt: these artists of bygone eras had the luxury of starting late, because unlike us, they weren't staring down the barrel of an escalating climate crisis, among a myriad of other potential disruptions to life as we currently know it. So I'm tired of people parroting the hollow sentiment that there's "still plenty of time." I know the intentions are good, and I wouldn't quite call it "toxic positivity," but I do think anyone who regurgitates these kinds of analogies to the past without the asterisk of our current time being vastly different is either willfully ignorant or in denial. But, I mean, if anyone can explain to me how I'm wrong and there actually IS plenty of time and we're all gonna be fine, I'd love to hear it. That's literally what I want anytime I work up the nerve to post about something like this. I'm desperately hoping someone will say "Niko, you're so fucking stupid" and prove to me that I'm overreacting and everything will be ok, but so far, no one ever has.
