tommy elliot doesn’t care much about the sad fates of others. fate laughed at him time and time again, after all, and it taught him plenty of lessons– bitter ones, painful ones, but lessons nonetheless. he learned to take care of himself. he learned to thrive. and if his survival comes at the expense of other peoples’ lives, well, that’s war, isn’t it. that’s all life is anymore for him: a never-ending personal war.

he was always like this– or wasn’t he? it’s difficult to make sense of. it doesn’t cause him turmoil; he’s well beyond that now. he doesn’t regret, he doesn’t anguish, he doesn’t care for anyone or anything except his own ends. he feels no burden of responsibility for the hurt he knows he’s caused. nothing for killing his father; nothing for killing his mother. nothing for killing anyone else. nobody ever regretted or anguished or cared over him, after all.

but didn’t peyton riley care?

he goes back and forth on that a lot. he’d never tell her, because he promised if he ever saw her again he’d hurt her so bad–, but it’s true. on the one hand, he’s absolutely certain she would have betrayed him eventually: turned him in to the police, or maybe tried to kill him and keep the elliot fortune for herself. on the other hand, why would she? he thinks about that. he thinks about the motivations and the outcomes and the stakes, and the drop in his gut when he looked up from his mother’s corpse and saw peyton watching him, and the way his heart jumped a mile a minute when she said she would take care of it. she lied for him that day. she watched him kill his own mother and she didn’t bat an eye and she lied for him and she killed for him. and that moment, that split second when he realized she was no stranger to violence, that she would not ask him to be something he was not– that was the moment he knew they were doomed. there can be no trust between those who share secrets: there is always one or another who desires to be free of it, to no longer rely on the mercy of their partner. and, of course, it’s far easier for two people to keep a secret when one of them is dead.

within five minutes of marla elliot’s tragic death, her lawyer had been murdered, and the will she had revised to leave tommy penniless was burning. within ten minutes, tommy called an ambulance and tearfully explained how marla had fallen and crushed her windpipe on the bedside table. within an hour, the happy couple were picking honeymoon destinations.

was that love? was that care? did he ever really feel anything for peyton, or was she just the first person to feel anything for him? he goes back and forth on that a lot.

he doesn’t regret leaving her. he doesn’t regret making them enemies. but the thought that he could be even a tiny bit responsible for the way she is now…

did he love her? does he still? could he ever? or was she just pretty and useful and lonely like he was? couldn’t she have been both? would they have been happy? or would they have ended up like their parents, drunk and shouting and dead too early because they deserved it? he wants to touch her face. pull her eyes to him. see what happens to her when he does. he’s always the surgeon, dissecting everything and everyone.

“should i apologize?” he tilts his head when he looks at her, takes in the familiar slope of her hair, the way her mouth sits, the color of her eyes. there’s nothing in his voice– it’s an honest question, but indifferent, even cruel. he could apologize, but would he mean it? and would she even believe him if he did?
