This song, on reputation, is one that’s clearly about a woman, and many people have speculated that it is about Karlie Kloss.

Taylor is talking about a love interest who she regularly is with in public, but they can’t tell anyone about their relationship. Taylor’s relationships with males have been well publicized, so from the start of this song, it doesn’t really fit any of the heterosexual “relationships” that she has had. However, when this song was written Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss were frequently in the same circles, at the same parties, and working the same events (Victoria’s secret fashion show, etc.), all spaces where they had to hide their relationship.

There is an indentation in the shape of you Made your mark on me a golden tattoo

The term “golden tattoo” has a double meaning - the first interpretation is that it is about Karlie’s blonde hair. The second is this series of pictures of Karlie and Taylor from Drake’s birthday party in 2016. Both women have literal golden tattoos in multiple places, and there are a lot of pictures from this night of the two of them getting cozy.

These lyrics speak to being closeted and being unable to say or act on your true feelings. Also potentially, “pining” has a double meaning, referencing “pine trees” from when Taylor and Karlie went to Big Sur together. (To be fair, Big Sur is known for its redwoods, not its pine trees, but many varieties of pine are also in the national park.)

Say my name and everything just stops I don’t want you like a best friend

This line is the most compelling, and the one that is most clearly about Karlie Kloss. Taylor and Karlie flaunted their friendship throughout most of 2014 and 2015. They were on the cover of Vogue together for an article titled “On the Road with Best Friends Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss”, and they played the “best best friend game” in a promo video for Vogue. No one ever seems to think the men Taylor hangs out are her “best friends” - there are always rumors about a romantic relationship - so no one would think that she would want a guy she was interested “like a best friend”.

“Carve your name into my bedpost” - this line is a play on the idea of a “notch in your bed post” or sleeping with lots of people and marking your bed after each one. By carving someone’s name in a bedpost it makes a practice that is traditionally flippant and impersonal, very personal and territorial. Also, this could be a reference to Taylor having a bedroom in her house that is “Karlie’s bedroom.”

Inescapable I’m not even going to try And if I get burned, at least we were electrified I’m spilling wine in the bathtub You kiss my face and we’re both drunk

This makes it clear that Taylor likes this person so much that she can’t stop herself. It also has a double meaning - that their contracts are inescapable so they’re not even going to try to get out of bearding for now. The last two lines of this phrase are very clearly not about a heterosexual relationship. It sounds like a situation where two girls are drinking, getting flirty, and one thing leads to another. 

Everyone thinks that they know us But they know nothing about

This line tells us that both Taylor and her love interest are famous and talked about by the media - which completely eliminates any possibility this song could be about Joe Alwyn, who is rarely discussed and people generally know very little about him. He’s definitely not a household name like Karlie is. Karlie’s life has been public from a very young age (she started modeling at 14), thus giving people the impression that they know her.

Honestly, I think this line is just a red herring to make us think the song is about Joe. If you have a different theory, let me know.

This person has been with Taylor through all of her ups and downs - another reason the song couldn’t be about Joe Alwyn (who she was only “dating” briefly before the album came out.) This is someone who Taylor can depend on and has been close to for years. Again, Karlie fits the bill.

This has always made me confused…why would the girls be nervous about a basketball game/being in public? Because it wasn’t a regular game? Because she was on an actual date with Karlie and was nervous they’d be going out? They walked in and out holding hands and hugged and were close for pictures. Definitely a date night. I miss those days.

Another blog answered an anon about the santal 26 candles but they also mentioned something else that I haven’t heard before & quite intrigued me. Is it true that Taylor used to have framed pictures of Karlie’s swimwear photoshoots (or something similar) on the walls “at eye level” in her Tribeca bathrooms? Do we have any proof of that? (Asked them too but would just like to know what you have to say on this)

There were people at the Secret Sessions in her NYC apartment (1989 era), that said she had photos of Karlie up in her penthouse. I do not recall exactly how they were described but I do recall a mention of the bathroom.

okay but I remembered something so cute idk if most people noticed but Karlie mostly wears high heels and she talked about owning it despite of her height etc and she always looks so freakin tall when pictured with other people but when she was papped with Taylor she mostly would be wearing flats so they could be closer in height and at eye level 🥺 idk I always thought that was cute because i often see her wearing heels everywhere
