are canon shippers physically incapable of shutting up about zutara because why is it that if some poor bastard on tiktok/instagram/reddit even mildly in any way, shape or form dares to imply that zuko and katara are cute together, you’ll get a thousand clowns crawling out of the woodwork to whine about how “mai.ko is canon!” “zutara is toxic!” “zutara shippers are delusional” “but katara chose aang!” like i’m sorry when did i order this fucking yappaccino? do you think the existence of zutara is contingent on your unwarranted, unwanted opinions?
zk fandom, always remember you will never love zutara anywhere near as much as random anti #5 on twitter patting themselves on the back for their superior media literacy! we should all be fortunate to learn from such professionals 🥰

Ambassador Katara headcanon:
Katara establishes a waterbending school on Ember Island. She always loved the location & warm beach. She thinks it’s the perfect place for waterbenders to learn & enjoy their element. She recruits many women from the North to learn combat & men to learn healing techniques.
Many waterbenders also fall in love with the location and settle there. After a decade, many mixed families also appear & the destination becomes popular internationally as a vacation spot, too. Some trained waterbenders settle around the EK and FN in order to bring their healing medical abilities across the world to save lives.
Some of the healers and waterbending combats join the guards at the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom palaces. Katara ensures her most trusted and talented waterbenders are guards & healer medics in the Fire Nation.
Which, when Katara often travels to the SWT, puts her mind at great ease leaving Zuko with her best-trained healers in the unfortunate case of an assassination attempt. The healers also go through the poor sects of the FN & EK, where they become beloved & revered members of their communities for their efforts to help and the kindness that usually accompanies the cultures of the Water Tribes.

Ambassador Katara fanon + headcanon lore is largely empowering for Katara's character in the face of canon falling short
Tumblr media
@momochi_owo
There has been some chatter on twitter lately that the Ambassador Katara headcanon/fanon is somehow "problematic" or un-empowering for Katara as a character. Most of the statements made in a thread on the subject are bad-faith arguments made from the outside looking in.
The statements are made largely by people who strongly dislike the ZK pairing, but as someone who has been a fan of the pairing for a decade and involved in the ship's fandom, I can tell you firsthand that the purpose of Ambassador Katara is to empower her.
The Ambassador Katara headcanon is a labor of love born from dedicated fans from the Zutara fandom, a group primarily made up of queer women of color who love Katara's character. Typically in the hc, Katara is an ambassador for the Southern Water Tribe who goes to each nation to represent the Southern Water Tribe and speak on its behalf politically.
She split from Aang as a teen, and is now in her early twenties or late teens (young adult) and has taken the time to find herself as an individual, first and foremost.
She hones her waterbending, helps people across all four nations, as she avidly did with pride and passion in the series, and becomes a political activist for decolonization, restoration, Fire Nation reparations, and more. As time goes by, she works closer and closer with the fire lord. Eventually, their feelings grow stronger and one of them confesses they've fallen in love. They then get married and have children together.
This would serve as great symbolism for the series as the Fire Nation would forever have heirs with Water Tribe heritage which could also aid in preventing wars. In my personal hc, I like the eldest kid, the heir, to be Kya, a waterbender. A waterbending fire lord.
Katara would then spend her time back and forth, half the year in the SWT and half the year in the FN and Zuko would join when he could. Katara would also work alongside Sokka in the United Republic Council, advocating for the SWT's needs globally.
Taking the steambabies (as the ZK fandom calls them) to the Southern Water Tribe half the year also would make sure that the kids were equally in tune with both their heritages and cultures. This is something that canon struggled to portray.
Granted, the problem with Katara's role in canon was Bryke. If Bryke happened to have preferred Zutara, I believe she'd have suffered the same fate of being cast aside as a male character's partner as her primary role.
That being said, the people making the Ambassador hcs are majority a group of WOC brainstorming ideas about their favorite pairing for years and years and creating a special lore that carries on into fanart, fan edits, and fanfics. It's pretty cool how this fanon has developed to be so widespread that there are even anti pieces on it!
The concept was so beloved and popular, that even Zukka shippers adopted it when Zukka gained much more popularity after ATLA got added to Netflix in 2020. I don't blame them, it's a great concept! They created Ambassador Sokka.
I casually ship Zukka and think they have very talented artists, btw! But, it's interesting that no one comes after them the way they do for Zutara for the same headcanons literally adopted from Zutara lore. It feels like it comes from a place of misogyny.
In this story, Katara keeps her political influence and gets to be a mother. Sitting on the throne alongside Zuko, Katara would also have mass influence to help people in the FN rebuild in poor areas and influence the education system in the FN to de-indoctrinate.
She would have mass influence to have the future of the Fire Nation see her as their leader & queen. She could build trust among the people w her service work to the poor & facilitate greater relations bt the two nations, something Katara clearly cares about.
The Fire Nation, even in wartime, was a place Katara was seen enjoying during the series. There's no reason to think Katara as a character would hate the FN or the everyday people. The palace is also a place that has history dating back thousands of years. It is more than Sozin.
Not everyone will agree on this, but many poc see the idea of ruling over a nation that once waged war on your own as a power fantasy. If you aren't a POC, you don't have a place to speaking over those who do.

It is something that happens in real life and can bring about real systemic change that benefits people of the oppressed country en masse. This happened to a degree with the queen of Jordan(despite having some iffy rich people views), as brought up by a ZK Palestinian discord friend.
There is also no reason Katara couldn't sometimes wear red to events, such as to a FN holiday dance or something. It is something couples of mixed heritage often do to engage in and appreciate one another's cultures. Of course, Zuko would do the same for the SWT!
Fire Lady is also an entirely fanon term. It does not exist in the series. It was previously popular, but as the fandom grew into young women, most of us now prefer "Ambassador Katara" and "Master Katara" as Katara's title should be about HER accomplishments.
Ambassador Katara is a passion project built with fan love by largely women of color. It's weird to tear down this fanon lore when it's entirely built off the imaginations of [mostly] WOC. There's no reason to think that in this concept Katara couldn't thrive.
She would be deeply loved by her husband & supported in her SWT identity, as well as their kids. She would thrive doing political work as ambassador, for her own tribe, the FN & Republic City. This is ZK fans' vision. It doesn't deserve to be disparaged in favor of a vision that was portrayed officially by two white men. In that vision, Katara had no political influence, no recognition, her kids had little understanding of their SWT culture, she lost her firey nature, and more. That feels like a disingenuous attack in the name of ship wars.
Most ZK hate boils down to misogyny. It comes from Bryke initially and trickles down. Antis deny it fervently, but when you break it down… that's usually what you find, whether internalized or projected. But, Ambassador Katara should be celebrated for its amazing and passionate and creative writers and artists!

Guys they reintroduced Galapagos tortoises to espanola island and they’ve essentially terraformed their environment, knocking over invasive plants so that endangered albatrosses (who need space to take off using the ground as a runway) have returned and established nests!

"Katara has no sense of humor."
Katara, ironically, has a dry sense of humor. Just because it gets overshadowed by Sokka's funny antics and Toph's witty one liners doesn't mean she doesn't have one at all. Throughout the whole first season, she is constantly teasing and making fun of Sokka in a light hearted and loving way. In fact, one of the funniest lines in the show (in my opinion) comes from Katara when they were first visiting Omashu.
Aang, Katara, and Sokka trying to figure out Bumi's name. Sokka: I got it! Aang: Yeah? Sokka: He's an earthbender, right? Rocky! [man coughs] Sokka: You know, because of all the rocks Katara: We're gonna keep trying, but that is a good backup.
That line never fails to get a full belly laugh from me. Mae Whitman's delivery of that line is just sheer perfection lol
And when Zuko joins the group, he becomes the target for her teasing.
After Zuko utterly fails at telling Uncle Iroh's tea joke. Zuko: Well, it's funnier when Uncle tells it. Katara: Right. Maybe because he remembers the whole thing. [Everyone laughs]
Katara does have a sense of humor. It's just a little dry. So can we as a fandom stop pretending that she doesn't?
P.S. I don't care that her supposed "lack of humor" was lampshaded in 'Sokka's Master,' that was one episode, and it was wrong anyway. God as much as I like Book 3 I also hate it.
