LVI But no one is mindful
unless it is the will of God,
who is caring and forgiving.
LV so whoever will
bears it in mind.
LIV Nevertheless, this is a reminder,
LIII That won’t happen.
But they don’t fear the hereafter.
LII What every one of them wants
is to be given a page opened up.
LI fleeing a lion?
L as if they were frightened donkeys
XLIX and what is the matter with them,
that they turn away from the reminder,
XLVIII So the intercession of intercessors
is of no avail to them;
XLVII “until certainty came to us.”
XLVI “and we used to deny the reality
of the day of requital,
XLV “and we used to become obsessive
along with the obsessed,

XLIII They will say, “We were not
in the habit of praying,

XLII “What made you enter hellfire?”
XLI about the sinners:
XL in gardens: they will inquire
XXXIX except the company of the right,
XXXVIII every soul is hostage to what it does
XXXVII to any one of you
who wishes to go ahead
or stay behind:
XXXVI a warning to humanity,
XXXV this is certainly one
of the most important matters,
XXXIV and the morning as it glows,
XXXIII and the night, as it recedes,
XXXII No! By the moon
II
XXXI and We have made only angels
commanders of hell,
and We have only made their number
a trial for those who scoffed,
so those to whom scripture was given
may become certain
and those who believe
may increase in faith,
and those given Scripture and believers
may have no misgivings;
and so those with sickness in their hearts,
and the scoffers, may say,
“What does God intend by this example?”
Thus God leaves anyone stray at will
and guides anyone at will;
and no one knows the forces
of your Lord but God.
And this is but a reminder to humanity.
XXX Over it are nineteen,
XXIX scorching the human being.
XXVIII It leaves nothing, and spares nothing,
XXVII And what will teach you what hellfire is?

XXVI I will roast him in hellfire.
XXV “this is merely the word of a mortal. ”
XXIV and said, “This is just traditional conjury;
XXIII then he turned his back in arrogance
XXII and he frowned and scowled;
XXI Then he looked
XX indeed, to his doom, how he plotted!
XIX And how he calculated, to his doom;
XVIII for he thought and calculated.
XVII We will bring distress down on him,
XVI By no means—for he has
stubbornly resisted Our signs.
XV yet who still wants Me to do more:
XIV and for whom I cleared the way,
XIII and children all around,
XII and for whom I provided
extensive resources
XI Leave Me with the one I created alone
X not easy on the atheists.
IX that will be, that day, a dire day,
VIII Then when the trumpet is sounded,
VII but be constant for your Lord.
VI and don’t be generous expecting much,
V and avoid filth;
IV and keep your clothing clean
III and glorify your Lord
II arise and warn
I You covering yourself,

XX Your Lord does know
that you stand in vigil
nearly two thirds of the night,
or half or a third,
and so does a group
of those with you.
And God regulates
the night and the day,
knowing you won’t calculate it,
thus letting up on you.
So read as much as is easy from the Qur’an.
God knows there will be
those among you who are sick,
and others traveling the land
seeking the bounty of God,
and others fighting for the sake of God:
so read as much of it as is easy,
and pray regularly, and give alms,
lending a good loan to God.
For whatever good you advance
for the sake of your souls,
you will find it with God,
who is best and greatest in recompense.
And seek forgiveness from God,
For God is the epitome of
forgiveness and mercy.

XIX This is a reminder;
let whoever will
take a path to his Lord.

XVIII and the sky split apart?
That promise will inevitably be fulfilled.
XVII so how will you be wary, if you scoff,
of a day that will make children grey,
XVI Pharaoh defied the messenger,
so We punished him severely:
XV We have sent you a messenger
as a witness regarding you,
as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh;
XIV the day the earth quakes,
and the mountains too,
with the mountains turning
to disintegrating dunes.
XIII and choking food,
and a painful punishment,
XII for We have fetters and fire,

who have comfort and convenience,
and give them a little time,
X and endure what they say patiently,
and remain aloof from them
with a graceful detachment.
IX Lord of the East and the West—
there is no other deity,
so take God as a guardian,
VIII yet remember the name of God,
and devote yourself wholly to God,
VII You do have a long course during the day,
VI Indeed, rising by night is most intense as a discipline,
and most appropriate
V for We will send you a weighty word.

(73) The One Wrapping Himself (المزمل Al-Muzzammil) Meccan (LXXIII) (Enfolded)
A sura that is part very early Meccan, part Medinan (verse 20). This verse describes how God relaxed the early regime of devotion first imposed on the Prophet (in verses 1–9) to prepare him for the weighty message. The Prophet is urged to be patient (verses 10–11), told of the punishment that awaits the Meccan disbelievers in Hell (verses 12–14), and reminded of the punishment that befell Pharaoh in this life (verses 15–16).
