I have been thinking about this scene for ten years now, and there’s still new angles and new eloquent ways to analyze it. I love this fandom. I love Hobb. i love all of you
Anyone has any thoughts about how Fitz wasn’t mad when the Fool kissed him, but then when he realized his friend actually loved him he was?
Was it because Fitz thought the kiss was a joke like he thought the love confession was? Was it because when it was finally clear that the Fool wasn’t joking he had to confront his own feelings?
It still feels weird to me because Fitz was never bothered about the kiss (all he did was be surprised about it and then at the end of the book he is like “oh yeah I hope my friend wears the earring I gave him forever”) and yet in the next trilogy he is such an ass when he realizes the all thing wasn’t a joke. It makes me think if he was already mad not only because of how confused he was about his feelings but also because that means the Fool told him he loved him and then left him for years.

Fitz and Company
So in Fool’s Quest, I found it interesting that aside from Fitz and Beloved, the three other people that made it through the skill-pillar and on to Kelsingra were:
Lant - a noble bastard (specifically, a Farseer bastard)
Ash/Spark - a young assassin
Per - a stableboy
All of which are elements of Fitz’s own identity. I’m not sure how purposeful that was, but it’s a nice example of the circular, repetitive elements that Hobb constantly goes back to.

Most writers’ romantic tension: ooh will they!! won’t they!! oops now there’s a secondary love interest hehe who will they choose ;) ?? ah dang, a misunderstanding! it’s gonna be a tough couple of chapters before they clear this up :(
Robin Hobb’s romantic tension: Fitz’s own childhood trauma and internalised homophobia will prevent him from embracing the overwhelming love he feels for and from his closest friend for almost his entire life, during which time he will be unable to fully open up with anyone else, not allow himself to be known and therefore believe himself unloved, meanwhile he will crave the glaring intensity of the inexplicable soul connection he knows he has with the Fool while simultaneously being so afraid of the pure sweet ecstasy of it that he will deny himself the euphoria of being that deeply known and that unconditionally loved to not only his own detriment but to the detriment of his beloved, causing unnecessary hurt and distance between them that will not be fully healed until the moment they literally die and become one being in mind, body and soul

Realm of the Elderlings Ask Meme Thing
Favourite RotE Book: Fool’s Errand. It’s a tough choice though, I love them all
Why: Getting to know adult Fitz, the time they spend together in Fitz’ cabin with F/F& Nighteyes & Hap & chickens. Also the scene with Dutiful on the Others beach, which is a very well written and memorable, and connects Fitz into this larger universe of magic hinted at in the Liveship Traders. The book has great mood and no hurry to anywhere. I controversially think it is also a great entry point to the series, if you don’t want to commit to reading 17 books but still want to get into all this.
Top Three Favourite Characters: Nighteyes!!!!!!, Kettricken, Althea
bubbling under: Etta, Bee, Verity, Patience, Lacey, Malta, Wintrow, Kettle, Hod, Molly (I’m firmly in camp “Molly deserved better”), i love them all, damn
I loved the Fool more when I was younger (Of course- they are hard not to love, especially the Assassin’s Quest young Fool) but my appreciation & exasperation for Fitz has grown more over the years. I think it is partly due to the Fitz & the Fool trilogy, his arc feels complete now. and daddy fitz is so hot
Top Three Least Favourite Characters: Hest, Kyle, Galen. Kennit is of course terrible too but he’s so well written and entertaining that it’s hard to list him as a least favourite. He’s more of a fuck-you-but-favourite.
Favourite Ship (of the floating kind): Ophelia!
Top Three Favourite Ships (of the people kind): Burrich/Chivalry is my OTP, Carson/Sedric is my wholesome fave, Althea/Brashen are great token heteroes. Also I friendship Nighteyes(/Fitz) & Kettricken a ton (firmly in the camp “Kettricken deserved better” too)
I see F/F As bit of a problematic fave relationship though I am very into it. I just guess that the amount of mental illness there is involved in that relationship (and these books in general) has gotten to me, making it a too heavy thing to ship with such a full heart and force I maybe would have at some point. (I still love F/F fic & art including fix its & smut though. I guess I just wanted to say that it is a complicated sailing.)
Would you rather be Witted or Skilled: Witted. I’d love to be magical in any way and the Skill, more the craft aspects than the telepathy thing, is really tempting for me too, but it’d fuck me up.
If you were Witted, what animal would you bond with?: I would enjoy what I would discover of myself based on who would choose to bond with me. Hopefully somebody who could live with me near the sea. If it would happen right now it would probably be an urban bird, a magpie or a hooded crow maybe
Would you rather live in the Outislands, the Mountain Kingdom, the Six Duchies, Bingtown, the Rain Wilds, Kelsingra, Jamaillia, the Pirate Isles, or Fool’s Homeland?: Anarcho-communist state of Pirate Isles (under Etta’s rule) feels like an interesting place, though the northern climate & nature of Six Duchies is probably where I would be most at home (and rebelling at the monarchy.) Magical queer utopia of Kelsingra also, but not sure if I would want to live with so much magic.
How were you introduced to the books? I had heard about them through the grapevine ( from my penpals and online friends mostly), everybody interested in fantasy was crazy about them when the Fool’s Fate translation was published and Hobb came into a con in my home country etc so I was kind of peripherally aware of them without any one source. One time I was bored and just went into the library, took out Assassin’s Apprentice and sat there hours reading it and was instantly hooked. I think I started reading them in 2008-ish? But my strongest memories of being obsessed with them are from 2010-11, maybe that is when I got to the Tawny Man. I was studying to be a blacksmith at the time and was totally obsessed with piratey/1700′s/sailpunk shit and Liveship Traders fed into that really well. long coats and leather boots and frilly shirts all the way.

alright but one of the most tragic things to me about the books is that because of where fitz grows up and because of people around him (even his friends, see starling or chade) acting horribly towards him (and the fool) or saying horrible things because of the Rumour his internalized homophobia never lets up for even a moment (except maybe for those fleeting ”my dream” and ”fitzchivalry farseer” moments when the fool is dead) and i wish so badly that things had been different, that maybe he had grown up farther in the south or been friends with people like Carson, like he felt he should be when he met him that one time, so that he’d gotten the chance to comfortably be himself…… i just……. :((

“the next day, as we followed the road through the mountain’s flank, I held the stone in my bare hand. my other arm was about the Fool’s waist, his arm around my neck. These two things kept my mind focused.”
