The school community has been deeply saddened by a second piece of upsetting news this week. We have learned of the death of our much loved Tony Berigan. Tony was a fixture of everything that happened in the school for decades, with his incredible organisational skills, his absolute dependability, and his renowned wit. Generations of St.Michael’s students and teachers benefitted from Tony’s good humour and hard work. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time. He will be sadly missed.
A book of condolence will be available at the school administration office from this afternoon (Tuesday 17th).

It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that we inform you of the death of Ms. Bonnie Shortall, which has taken place.
Bonnie grew up in the lodge at St. Michael’s College as her late parents, Maurice and Elizabeth, were long –serving members of staff. She came to work in St. Michael’s in 1976 and since then has endeared herself to generations of boys, parents and staff. After Bonnie retired from her cleaning duties, she continued to come in each morning, with Mary, to help with the supervision rota in the Junior School. Bonnie became ill just before the holidays and was hospitalised. In the past days, her condition remained critical until her peaceful death yesterday.
Bonnie will be sorely missed by all of us in the St. Michael’s community, who have so many fond memories of her quick wit, constant support, loyal friendship and absolute devotion to the boys. Her death breaks a link between the Shortall family and St. Michael's which goes back to the earliest years of the school.
We offer our sincere sympathy to Mary and to Bonnie’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.

Some kind feedback from the Camino last week…
This day last week my wife and I were queuing inside the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, to view the crypt of St.James. Immediately ahead of us was a young lad. He told us that he was a Transition Year student from St. Michael's and that himself and his classmates had just completed some of the Portuguese Way. Coincidentally, that was the bit we had done too. He was joined by two of his friends and they told us how much they had enjoyed the walk. From talking to them, they were under a bit of time pressure to catch a bus. Sometime later three more lads joined them and asked us if we would mind if they jumped the queue and joined their friends.
Both myself and my wife are retired second level school teachers, who have taken students on foreign trips in the past, so we understood the situation.
What I want to say to you, as a retired school Principal, is that those 6 students are a credit to themselves, their parents, their teachers and their school. They were engaging, well spoken and most of all, very respectful young men. They spoke well of their experience and behaved impeccably in the Cathedral.

An amazing trad recital with Zoe Conway and John McIntyre this afternoon. It was really special and a great way to round off what has been a very busy year for our music department. We were also treated to some fantastic music from our own students to close the show.
