Favorite Thing I Learned
My favorite thing I learned was about filming. I thought it was really cool to learn about the different filming techniques you can use in order to make a video.
One specific thing I thought was really neat was how old movie films could make a film look like it produced a slow motion video. I learned that they would actually produce more frames over a shorter period of time, so that when they played the movie film at normal pace it would look like it was in slow motion.

New Media: Music Video
Here below is a link to a music video to Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars”:

This video definitely compliments the music instead of the lyrics. You can tell by the change of the camera movement when the beat changes. This is a really cool music video and one of my favorites.

New Media: Music Video
Here below is a link to a music video that I thought was really interesting:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nntGTK2Fhb0
This music video is created by Jack U, a DJ duo created by Skrillex and Diplo. The song is “Where Are U Now” and the song is created by Skrillex, Diplo, and Justin Bieber.
I really enjoy this video because the whole point of the video is to give back to the fans that support the artists’ careers. If you watch the video you can see Justin Bieber singing and looking into the camera. Then once the beat drops you see all of this artwork take over the screen. Different pieces of artwork shown frame after frame. If you want to see a particular piece of work, just pause the video and look at the drawing. Each of these drawings/paintings are created by an individual fan. I think this is an incredibly unique idea to bring fans and stardom together. The different paintings change with each frame to kind of give the video a strobe light appeal and this definitely goes hand in hand with the music being played. When the music is playing, Justin is not singing and the artwork is being displayed. When Justin begins to sing again, the dance music stops and the art stops being shown.
I think the way this video was created perfectly lines up with the mood of the song. The video and the artwork being displayed go at the same speed. When Justin sings the artwork slowly crawls up his body and the video really slows down. Then when the dance music plays, the video plays frame by frame and make the video look “choppy,” and this is when all the different pieces of artwork are shown.

Bear Day
Tumblr media
Here is a picture of my partner and me at Bear Day. This was taken at our poster presentation for our senior design project: Autonomous Drone Delivery. The event was held for all senior engineering students. The students stood by their posters and invited any people who were curious about a particular project and were there to answer any questions.

Constructing Images With the Camera
Here below is an example of a constructed landscape that I thought was interesting.
Tumblr media
This image was created by Vilde Rolfsen and the image is actually a photograph taken of a plastic bag. I really like this image because at a glance it looks as if this is a photograph taken in some cave in the arctic. It looks as if the photograph was taken in an arctic environment during either dusk or dawn. I really enjoy the colors and the texture of this photograph. I think the techniques performed in creating this constructed landscape make for a really interesting image.

Museum of Arts and Sciences - Macon, GA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are a couple of pictures of my favorite artwork that I found in the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences. This artwork displays two different quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. along with two different pictures of him. You can only see one image and quote at a time; not simultaneously. If you look directly straight at the artwork, you will not be able to tell what the art is trying to portray. This is made possible by the technique of the artist. I think this technique is very interesting because the art is almost like an optical illusion. I also like this piece of history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a revolutionist and a philosopher that changed our country forever. The growth of our country could not have happened if it were not for the bravery of this man.

Film History and Mechanics of Film
There have been multiple filming techniques produced over the years. Slowing time by increasing the the frequency of frames produced was one of many film techniques discovered. Here below is a movie clip from “The Hurt Locker”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDLA4fAw5L4
If you skip to time 3:30 of the clip you can see the slow motion explosion. This clip does an excellent job of making the scene epic and dramatic. Instead of the typical explosion with orange burning flames, this scene emphasizes the movement of dirt and gravel. This scene shows how much damage an explosion can cause.

Fine Art
Tumblr media
The picture above is a work of art by Mark Dion. This is my favorite work that I have seen by Mark Dion. This is a dead tree that he retrieved from nature and he placed it in a park in the middle of a city. This was an extravagant procedure to keep the vegetation alive on the tree. The purpose of this was to show how hard it is to replicate what nature can accomplish.

History of Photography
The Daguerreotype was the first photographic process available to public world. This idea was revolutionary because it gave people the opportunity to capture images and keep them for an extended period of time. This was something that had not been accomplished. Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre was a pioneer in photography for inventing the Daguerreotype and photography progressed after his initial idea. An example of a Daguerreotype can be seen below:
Tumblr media
I think this Daguerreotype is interesting because if you look closely, you can see a pole behind the man’s right leg. This pole was used to help the man to stand still for several minutes at a time. People being photographed by this process needed to stand still for an extended period of time, so the camera could produce a clear picture.  Another example of a Daguerreotype can be seen below:
Tumblr media
This image was created by Takashi Arai. Takashi is a modern-day photographer who still uses the Daguerreotype process.

The photograph of the deer drinking water is a photo taken by a photographer named Frans Lanting and the mugshot of Frank Sinatra was released by the Berger County Sheriff’s Office in 1938.
The first image definitely has an artistic appeal and was taken by a professional photographer who has multiple portfolios of work. There is an obvious pattern shown with the group of deer drinking from the spring. The reflection in the water has the same pattern and artistic appeal. The reflection in the water and the deer drinking from the spring meet at the surface of the water. This aspect of the photograph makes this photo a piece of art and makes it pleasing on the eye. This image could be used for something more than just art. This image could be seen in a textbook and could be used as a visual for an article explaining the habitat and lifestyle of deer.
The second image shows the mugshot of a famous singer named Frank Sinatra. This image was released by the police department for the general public to be aware of someone who was recently convicted of committing a crime. The image was initially used to document news and to show it to the public; however, nowadays, this picture can be found on posters around the world. It is a hugely popular photo and the image is now has a purpose for art. People simply like the photo; probably due to the fact that the convict became an icon in the music industry and the fact that he was an attractive man.
Initially, the two photos represented above, were created for different purposes. The first image was used as a piece of artwork and the second image was used to document a current news report at the time. However, the first photo could be used for documentation and the second photo has been used as a work of art for several years in pop culture.

Hermeneutics
Tumblr media
The image above is an example of a polysemic image, meaning that the image holds more than one meaning. The image is comprised of two different images displayed twice with either “holiday” or “hell” written over it each time. You can see that there is a picture of someone camping and there is a picture of people sunbathing on a cruise ship. The message I receive from this image is that everyone is different. Not everyone enjoys camping and not everyone enjoys traveling on a cruise ship. Some people may enjoy both activities, some people may enjoy one of the activities, and some people may not enjoy either activity. This is what makes the world different and makes everyone unique. If this was not a reality, then the world would be a pretty boring place. I think this image displays this idea perfectly.

Semiotics - Index
Tumblr media
This is a picture of a rubbing that I created. This rubbing was created on the steps to my front porch of my house in downtown Macon. When choosing a spot for the creation of the rubbing, I chose the brick steps because I thought that material had the most character. The house is a very old house with a lot of character. I thought it was really neat to produce that character onto a sheet of paper and to create my own artwork out of it.

Semiotics - The Sign
Below are two examples of identifying the ‘sign’, the ‘signifier’, and the ‘signified’:
Example 1:
Tumblr media
Signifier: The car that is made by Mitsubishi Motors, the detached wheels from the car, and the rhinoceros.
Signified: The idea that this car is going to be a durable car. We know what a car looks like because we see them every day. The rhinoceros that looks like it is going to be placed underneath the frame of the car gives us a different meaning. A rhino is a strong predator in the wild. Knowing this about the rhino tells the viewer that the car is going to be a strong, durable, and reliable car.
Sign: The image of the advertisement and the obvious understanding the viewer will receive from seeing the advertisement.
Example 2:
Tumblr media
Signifier: The image or the symbol that is shown.
Signified: The idea and understanding that is gained from getting a visual of this image.
Sign: The image and the idea of this symbol.
