A little advice from someone studying extremist groups: if you’re in a social media environment where the daily ubiquitous message is that you have no hope of any kind of future and you can’t possibly achieve anything without a violent overthrow of society, you’re being radicalized, and not in the good way.

I love how this show portrayed how no act of kindness goes to waste. Im Sol had no real reason to show friendship to the random high-school dropout guy she had a crush on when she was 19. But she did. She convinced him to abandon his rackety lifestyle, dressed his wounds, urged him to consider a parent’s point of view which in turn acted as catalyst for the mending of his relationship with his father, encouraged him to graduate, and praised him wholeheartedly when he did so. All of which (the scolds and the compliments) added up to him finding his purpose and making a good life for himself.

Her sincere and unceasing kindness towards Kim Tae Song in all the timelines gained her not only a friend for life, but the said friend turned out to be the one who ultimately reversed her ill fortune. Saving not only her but the man she loves as well. Thereby securing them a happy future together.

okay so we talk a lot about the themes of friendship in bad buddy and the way bad buddy is such a deeply queer show, but i haven’t seen anyone talking about those two things as a unite.

like part of what makes bad buddy so amazing is the relationships between queer characters, and it really does showcase an amazing aspect of queer friendships throughout. like the fact that pat, pran, ink, and pa were all friends in high school and drifted together and became so close only for all of them to later come out and realize they’re queer is SUCH a common thing in real life queer friendships.

queer people find each other! we find community in each other sometimes even before we know we’re queer. and i really love the way bad buddy not only showcases queer people and their romantic relationships, but also the friendships we make together.

pat and pa being siblings that grew up under the same scrutiny and were there for each other when they came out. pat and ink forging a friendship and pat developing feelings for her only for ink to be pivotal in helping him realizing where his true feelings lie and being there for him through it. pran and ink connecting despite their short time together and pran not once resenting her for being the girl pat liked and the two of them becoming close. pa and pran growing up close despite their families hating each other and bonding further once pat and pran get together. even the two couples being real friends before they got together!

it’s just so nice to see a show that showcases queer friendships in such a positive light. i just love this show man :’)

Did we not use a proof reader with Golden Terrace? A lot of this narration and dialogue could have been cleaned up immensely.

Example:

Fu Ling couldn't hold back anymore. Agitated, she threw herself toward him, gave a wail, and burst into tears.

The old maid who had accompanied her was nearly scared out of her mind. Fu Shen was pushed back by the force, but, utterly steady, he pulled her into his arms. "Oh my goodness, go easy... Little lady, do you think you're still seven years old?"

Her taut heartstrings gave out altogether. Princess Qi forgot about decorum and restraint, clutched his sleeve tightly, and sobbed so hard she could hardly speak. Babbling, she could only keep repeating "I only have one big brother."

I thought it was just me being exhausted, but this translation is incredibly stilted. I understand that there is meaning lost between Chinese and English and not everything is going to come out squeaky clean. However, I feel like an edit using more or less the same thing would have conveyed the same emotion with fluidity.

Something rough like:

It was clear that Princess Qi was agitated, and that she had finally had enough. She dove for her brother, wailing as a stream of tears poured out. This sudden unexpected action from her mistress had startled the elderly maid, and she didn't react quickly enough to stop this grown woman from throwing herself onto her brother.

Fu Shen was nearly knocked out of his wheelchair by the force, but he managed to keep them upright and steady.

"My goodness, Meimei. Do you think you're still seven years old?" He pulled her into an embrace, which seemed to finally break the tension in her heart-strings.

She began to babble incoherently, tugging on Fu Shen's sleeve as she continued to cry and fuss. The phrase "I only have one big brother" was muttered more than once, which caused Fu Shen's breath to catch in his throat as his own composure finally broke.

Hell, I know that's not perfect. Chinglish phrasing tends to be a quick staccato of words. There's a lot of emotion in the diction, and it has it's own feel and energy. There's always a quality to the way phrasing works itself out in Chinese -> English translations, and I feel like this novel is rougher than most. It notes a lot of the key movements, but looses the coherency of the scene as a whole. I feel like deviating from the OG Chinese to logically rearrange movements and actions is fine. Especially if it helps the reader navigate the scene.

In addition, It keeps clear that Fu Shen was using his sister's courtesy name, Princess Qi, at first because he was trying to distance his sister from his BS. Then transitions back into her given name of Fu Ling after Fu Shen has his stronk feelings for his sister re-emerge with some coaxing. It also spares the reader from whiplash via courtesy and given names being used interchangeably. Something that makes sense in OG context but. not in English.
