The Parang
The Parang motif was once one of the “Larangan” designs, a proscribed and prohibited motif reserved for the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, some Parang were worn exclusively by the King.
Traditional Parang from Yogyakarta consisted of slanting parallel rows of dagger- like segments, arranged repetitively on contrasting colours of cream white, brown and indigo. It was known as the sword pattern or the tongue of fire and was related to the “Keris” ceremonial dagger, promoting strength, power, authority and speed.
The characteristic curved lines of Parang could also be translated as waves in the sea, symbolising the power and greatness of nature. Legends emphasised the supernatural power of the Parang to bring victory in war, protection and healing of the sick.
Parang is not only known just this one type print. This particular motif has several variations of this striking diagonal design with its sweeping lines and rows of “Mlinjon”, lozenge shaped circular motifs.
They range in size from the 2cm “Klitik” to the giant 12cm Parang Barong.

The Mega Mendung
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi everyone! I am currently working on my prints which are inspired by the Batik Mega Mendung. Although is not exactly my first time creating a graphic based design work. But I have to admit it has been really challenging to me and yet fun at the same time. I do  not know whatsoever the fundamental knowledge on design and graphics.  And after trying to get a grip for a bit. Then I would  say the hardest part is how to make the print not looking too flat or way too graphic - esque. And last but not least, is of course the 'right' colour palette. It think these prints are not so bad as first trial, but for sure testing other colour could create different impact. Don't you think? Anyways, I will post bit more later for further development on my prints!
