Magic: the Gathering - Ixalan / Rivals of Ixalan
Pirates ‘n’ Dinosaurs !
It is a rather good chance that the top image is a scene from the fabled / lost city of Orazca.  This image made 100% more awesome with the eye-patched pirate sneaking in the background.

To summarize what’s changing in Magic’s structure as per Metamorphosis 2.0:
The two-block model is not working either and being abandoned.
Standard needs core sets for reprints.
Ixalan will be the last two-set block, and the last block in Magic.
Starting with the Spring 2018 set, Magic starts the three-and-one model of design.
Each year has three large sets and one introductory summer set; blocks are done.
Each large set is drafted by itself.
If the story calls for it, two adjacent blocks can stay on the same plane. But, they don’t have to. They can also share mechanics if there’s a good story reason.
The Gatewatch won’t always be present in Standard. Don’t expect the Origins Five to be in every story anymore, and some sets might even lack a Gatewatch member at all (but still move the story forward.)
The Masterpiece Series will not be a default, only showing up in sets where something awesome can be done.

Quantum Commander
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quantum Commander (or “QC” for short) is a format for playing Magic: the Gathering that was inspired by an ask from @wretchedor30 (you can see the original post here.)
The overall premise of the format is that it’s similar to Commander (a.k.a. EDH) except that instead of having a single commander, Quantum Commander allows players to have up to two commanders as long as those commanders flavorfully represent different versions of the same character. (Like the two Ashlings pictured above.)
But in QC, those two commanders actually represent two different states of reality, so there’s a bit more to it than just “you get to have two commanders.” Below is a further breakdown of the rules. (Updates will be made below the “Keep reading” link as they’re made.)
So for those of you curious about Quantum Commander, read on…

Quote
“Magic is a “science fiction story set in a fantasy setting” while Star Wars is the opposite. Science fiction, at is core, is about exploring what if. It’s literature investigating humanity’s potential. Fantasy, at its core, is about morality. It’s exploring the internal struggle of good and evil within humanity. Magic is a what if tale. Star Wars if a morality tale. Each though dresses itself up in the genre trappings of the other.“

I want to learn to play Magic the Gathering but...
I’m anxious.
I’m anxious that I’m not good enough.
I’m anxious that it’s annoying to play with me while I’m learning.
This is a common anxiety that I’ve heard from newer players or people interested in playing. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Everyone, even pros and the person teaching you, were where you are at one point.
If a magic player gets upset with you for being new to the game they’re a jerk and not worth listening too.
The (non-jerk) players pretty much unanimously want to share the game and help new players get into it.
MtG is a game. Playing it (and learning it) is supposed to be fun.
Of course, with anxiety you can know these things and it doesn’t necessarily help so here actions that can help:
Play against a computer for a bit. Duels of the Planeswalkers is a free to play (ftp) game with more information here
Play against someone at the point in learning you are. If you can, rope in another friend to learn with you. Ideally you would have an experienced player with you to answer questions and explain concepts but if that isn’t possible, I recommend the magic judge irc here.
MtG judges are dedicated volunteers who are there to answer questions. You are not going to bother anyone by asking them questions.
Play with premade decks made for beginners. Experienced players, even with their casual decks, can forget about how complicated things can be and take a lot of the rules for granted. The different decks to look into are:
Planeswalker decks
Sample Decks (these can only be had from game store owners. They are free, but are limited. Check in the spring of 2017)
Booster battle packs
Talk about your anxiety with the person teaching you. Let them know how you are feeling. If you need to hear things explained more than once or to go slowly let them know that. Hear from them that those things, or anything else you need, is okay.
This post is the first installment on the common barriers to learning magic. If you have any suggestions on topics to cover, please let me know.

Women have a place in the Magic community and shouldn’t be forced to create their own spaces to enjoy the game because they’re afraid of being judged or creeped on. Spaces where men play Magic should be as welcoming to women as they are to men. If you are one of those kind few who offer a kind word or make an effort to make everyone, regardless of gender and sexuality, welcome in the space you’re playing, good job! But please make sure others are doing the same. Magic is a game for everyone and spaces where the game is played are for everyone.

So MaRo just gave me an idea, what if we get a cycle of cards in Amonkhet block that are based on the Exodus plagues of Egypt? I always found the story of the plagues intriguing, and they could totally translate to cards if done right.
Oooh!! That’s an amazing idea!!
Let’s see…
Green - Locusts Red - Fiery Hail Black - Boils and Sores Blue - Frogs White - Wrath of God
Yup, that could TOTALLY fit as a five color cycle!

My only complaint about Kaladesh is that, as a steampunk setting, it didn't feel grimy or, well, steamy. It felt too shiny and clean to me. Steampunk is sorta defined to me by its grittiness, which Kaladesh sorely lacks.
That was on purpose. We wanted our own take on steam punk and purposefully chose to go optimistic it rather the traditional pessimistic outlook.

Arbitrary Card of the Day 12-22-16: Animate Land
Tumblr media
Today’s arbitrary card of the day is Animate Land. You’re right, flavor text, that is irony! Irony deals with events that are the opposite of expectations. This flavor text talks about regular irony.
There is also dramatic irony, which occurs when a character in a story does something without knowing what the audience knows (eg. Superman doesn’t know Lex Luthor has kryptonite bullets, but the audience saw them being made in an earlier scene).
You can like things “ironically” because people wouldn’t expect you to like that thing (Non-hipsters know this simply as “liking something.”)
Irony is not coincidence, so please stop using those things interchangeably.
