y'know when you were a little kid and you did something you knew was bad and that you knew you would get in trouble for but you did it anyway? and then an adult (a parent, most likely, as it always was in my case) would catch you and they would tell you that you can’t do that. they’d ask “why’d you do that??” and you would just quietly and carefully answer “…i don’t know” even though you definitely fucking knew why you did it. you just didn’t want to actually say why you did it because you were afraid of the outcome.

yeah, well think about that, except with richie. after eddie died right there in his arms with his last words being “…you know i always…”, he jumped up, shouted, and kicked down a door. and when beverly asked “why’d you do that, richie??”, he answered “…i don’t know”. even though he definitely fucking knew well enough. he was just afraid of the outcome. afraid of actually realizing that maybe he kinda, sorta loved eddie. afraid because eddie just diED and he knew what eddie was trying to tell him but he just didn’t get enough time. afraid of having to come to terms with these things. afraid because he’s just a kid again, and he knew well enough why he did that, he just didn’t want to say it out loud. didn’t want to say it because he was afraid of the outcome- of the aftermath.
