Judy Hale Headcanon:

Aside from weed, Judy would not touch drugs with a ten-foot pole. Even decades later, she still remembers what it's like, trying to get her mother to eat and then having to make sure she doesn't choke on her own vomit. She had watched her mother OD too many times.

This is doubly true when she finds herself around Jen's kids. She never said her promise aloud - not even to herself - but it's one she takes very seriously.

So when she and Jen gets hit-and-run, she stands by this. Some days, the weed is enough to tide her over the worst. There are more days when it's not. And still, she refuses to take the hydrocodone. Not even when the pain is so bad she can't sleep, can't eat, can't help but puke from the pain.

When Jen asks, she says she's taken her meds. And then one by one, she drops the pills into the toilet. When the boys fret, she gives them her biggest smile and bribes them with all sorts of bits and bobs until they forget why they were so worried in the first place.

Ironically, it all comes to a head when one afternoon, the pain was so bad Judy passes out in the bathroom. It's little Henry who finds her. When she finally comes to, he is screaming his little heart out, sobbing and begging her to not be dead. Charlie is there checking her pulse, and when she's says she's fine, he hugs her so tightly her ribs creak.

Their cries would haunt her nightmares for months to come.

And so her secrets come out. They have to because Jen keeps looking at her with stricken eyes, and Henry cries whenever she's out of sight. There is Charlie who tries to look unaffected but jumps to help if she so much as walks too slowly.

She tells them about her mother in small, choppy words. Tells them about her mother's drug habit. For the first time in her life, she puts her promise into words and hopes they understand what that means. And she tries to wave it off with a small smile, but none of them are smiling back and she can feel the air crackle from the tension.

When Jen says "sorry, that should not have happened to you", it hits for the first time in her life that it really should not have.

And when Charlie and Henry bury her in hugs, they refuse to let her comfort them. So she sits still. Nervous. Relieved. A hundred and one emotions she could not name just yet.

The next day, they call the doctor to change her medicine - something non-addictive. Jen makes her promise to tell her if it's getting bad again. The doc backs her up, so Judy says yes.

And when she falls asleep without pain for the first time in a long time, she's surrounded by her family - the first one who loves her as much as she had loved them.

Judy hopes she can keep them this time.

I was at a point where I was so happy, I was doing everything that I wanted to, but then there were people who made me feel like maybe I wasn’t good enough or I didn’t deserve to be there, I wasn’t cut out to be a musician. I realized that what anyone says doesn’t actually matter. It was something that I learned during the period of writing Future Nostalgia — I was able to shut people out. Now, if anybody says anything, it doesn’t even bother me. Nothing even cuts through, because I realized that if you’re passionate about something and you’re good at your job and you write from the heart, no one can take that away from you.
