tiktok is such an awful app, it's almost designed to feed you misinformation and expose you to insane discourse. unlike beloved tumblr, the app that feeds me misinformation and exposes me to insane discourse

This makes me really happy, I’ve heard and seen all sorts of things when it comes to trans people in the workplace.

My first job I ever had I was 14 and there was a person there, and while I never got confirmation, I assume they were transmasc. The entire time they were referred to with feminine pronouns despite their obvious masc presentation. I assumed initially that they were butch, until I noticed the way their hands balled up at the sides in frustration every time. They seemed really upset but bit their lip and did their work. I wanted to reach out to them privately or say anything but everyone was so much older than me and I was scared. On the car ride back from the work site, my manager gave us a talk about being careful around “those” people and to not say anything too offensive as they’ll report you. He then looked at me directly and implied that “it can be the quiet ones that‘ll really get you”, I remember him using my name as an example and while it was supposed to be some sort of joke I felt so uncomfortable. My coworkers started talking about their leg hair and questioning whether they were a boy or a girl.

Since then, I’ve taken extra notice how trans classmates, coworkers, friends etc were treated, I’ve always been disheartened by it all. And with everything in the news, I’ve been afraid as to how things may be getting worse, but being able to hear these stories helps put my mind a bit at ease. In just a few short years it seems so much more social progress was made.

I started a new remote job last week, and I'm the only genderqueer person at the company (and the first person who uses neo pronouns that anyone on my team has ever met, apparently).

So far:

Manager carefully wrote down spelling and pronunciation of my pronouns and told everyone on the team to respect them.

Coworker apologized privately for misgendering me (I hadn't told her yet) and said she will practice.

Guy on another team valiantly tried to use my pronouns and ended up saying something like zirzs-zhizz (I DM'd him and thanked him for trying and linked him to a practice site).

Teammate told me he has written out my pronouns and how to use them in a sentence and literally taped it to his monitor so he can practice.

Teammate also referred to me as compañere after I linked to a comic about gender-neutral endings in Spanish (whole team except me + 1 other person speaks Spanish as first language and they held all meetings in Spanish before the two of us started).

I am so stoked that people are actually trying. 💜🤍💚

i learned about Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia woman who began taping whatever was on television in 1979 and didn’t stop until her death in 2012.. The 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes she made are the most complete collection preserving this era of TV. They are being digitized by the Internet Archive. (x)
