I, too hate capitalism

Tendo was a very likable main character

It had really great special effects, like the zombies’ makeup and the shark.

The pacing was off a bit, it felt really fast at the beginning but then the ending was really slow.

Given that this movie is an anthology of 9 shorter stories, we did something different with our review. Instead of doing a general like vs. dislike, we went anthology by anthology and did a short list of what we liked and didn't like.

Liked: The twist at the end

Liked: Arthur Darvill, the story itself was very fun and one of the best love stories we’d seen, the ending was unexpected

The zombies in this movie are very creative, with the whole remembering their past (human) lives.

The ghosts! They were so good!

The Hatbox Ghost

Owen Wilson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Danny Devito were all killer at their roles

The fact that they didn’t just copy the 2003 version was something that the both of us loved.

This was genuinely just a good movie.

What you didn’t like about the movie:

We miss the Singing Heads. This movie needs some Singing Heads.

Reflections: Vic: “I went into this movie thinking it would be a carbon copy of the 2003 movie with Eddie Murphy, but honestly, I was pleasantly surprised! The 2003 one was good, but this was great. I enjoyed pretty much everything about this movie!” Nic: “This was definitely an upgrade on the 2003 one. That movie still holds nostalgia for me but this a better movie, better in effects, feeling and setting. It’s a beautiful wonderful new movie that holds up to the ride.”

CHURCH. BEST BOY. GOODEST ANIMAL ACTOR.

The child actors were great. 

Jud! Vic is partial to the 80s version of him, but the 2019 version is great too!

What you didn’t like about the movie:

It felt unfinished.

The whole movie would have been pointless if they’d just had the Death Talk with Ellie before everything.

Rachel is a bitch for leaving her husband alone while he’s grieving.

There’s a lot of plot holes.

Particularly memorable scene:

Vic: When Jud gets his ankle cut.

Would you watch it again:

Vic: Yes

Vic: “I have a whole thing for Pet Sematary since it was one of the first horror movies I finished, but there are plot holes and a bunch of things could have been fixed really simply. I still enjoyed it though.” Nic: “I have never seen this movie and had a lot of misconceptions about it. It feels unfinished for some reason and maybe that’s just me. Also, lot of places we could have stepped off this crazy train guys.”

The premise

The plot was decent but we both felt like the movie could have been longer.

The characters were really distinct and memorable.

The found footage aspect of this was very well done.

The slow build up to the main action felt like it took 3/4ths of the movie.

The ending wasn’t satisfying at all.

Vic: “I really wanted to like this movie a lot more. The buildup is far too slow for a movie of this length and it feels like a near vertical drop into all the action with an unsatisfying ending.”

The concept of the Burrowers.

What you didn’t like about the movie:

The ACTUAL Burrowers. We both think that if they’d just done little snippets and glimpses of the creatures instead of showing the full thing. 

THE ENDING. IT WAS TERRIBLE. 

We’re pretty certain that the writers didn’t do any research into the Indigenous peoples of the areas that they were talking about. 

Particularly memorable scene: Vic: The beginning scene in the root cellar. Nic: The hole of ribs

Would you watch it again: Vic: No. Absolutely not Nic: Nope

Reflections: Vic: “The more I sit and think about this movie, the more it doesn’t make sense. None of it does. The ending wasn’t satisfying, there was a lot of racism (which we expected given that it’s a western), the monsters weren’t well thought out, they didn’t do any research at all. I just... I wanted better.” Nic: “0/10 monster design, keep the fleshy crickets hidden away.”

The special effects were incredible.

The jump scares were pretty good. There wasn’t really any lead up to them showing on screen.

Vic: The jump scares. I get spooked easily, okay? And my website wasn’t right on time.

The CGI and practical effects were incredible.

Katie, the little ghost girl.

Karl Urban kills in everything he does.

The deaths of the crew were very creative.

What you didn’t like about the movie:

Too many plot holes which lead to many, many questions. (Vic: If the plot holes were fixed, this would easily be a 9.2 for me but the plot holes are tanking it for me)

The kitchen scene. IYKYK.

Particularly memorable scene: Vic: The scene where Epps is being shown everything in the past. Nic: KARL URBAN’S BRUTAL DEATH
