Dead poets society, let me spit, is still popular for the simple reason (if not the setting or the storyline) the attitudes are real in the movie. The way they play on real teenagers and not the newer impersonation (Specifically, shows made for millennials instead of teenagers themselves... euphoria.) of teenagers is relatable. During the casting and actual filming, the director made it a point for them to be awkward, uncomfortably loud, and feminine, because teenagers are losers. It seems crass to say that, but it is just true. With Neil and his honestly sort of cringe personality it reminds you of actual theater kids. Todd is uncomfortable with almost every new experience, like a normal teenager. In the end, immaturity is their unbecoming. Neil didn't understand the implications of his death. Todd didn't want to understand that, at the end of the day, teenagers aren't listened to. 

This movie would be extremly diffrent if done now with the misrepresentation of what it is like to be a teenager. (Plus no one would actually like it lol.)

This is absolutely heartbreaking to see Todd go through. His face is shown after walking in circles. There's an obvious change in his expression, it slowly becomes more disappointed in himself. Todd has this one way to express himself, that he enjoys, and he feels as if he isn't "good enough" to write poetry. The words on that page made up for the words he couldn't say out aloud. To him, even those words were terrible.
