it was near the end of her shift and it was completely quiet, thank god. june could take a moment and catch up on her charts. looking up to see emma, the woman was about to break the silence before suddenly being cut off, biting her tongue instantly. normally, she would've kept talking, she wouldn't have shut up, but instead, she just forced a smile on her face. she had a few years here, what was the point? just get through it. "very true," she noted as she brought the cup of coffee up to her lips. after a while she finally asked, "so how far did the guy get? did he at least know where his appendix was?"

The shift has been quiet—eerily so. The kind of quiet that makes seasoned doctors tense, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Emma’s curled up in one of the break room chairs, legs tucked under her scrubs, nursing a lukewarm cup of coffee like it’s the only thing anchoring her to the earth.

When she sees one of her coworkers open their mouth, she doesn’t even let them get a word out.

“No,” she says flatly, eyes narrowing over the rim of her mug. “Don’t say it. Don’t you dare jinx us.”

She takes a long sip, then adds, deadpan, “Last time someone said the ‘q’ word, we had three codes in a row and a guy tried to remove his own appendix in the lobby. So. Try silence instead. It’s underrated.”

when brynn was finally able to take her break and get out of the hospital, she was practically running over to code latte, she couldn't get an iced latte fast enough. that was until her body almost seemed to collide with javi's, really? right now, when she was already so exhausted? her body seemed to let out a sigh, she knew she needed to slow down, take a moment, a look of confusion washed over her as soon as he spoke, "wait, why? who'd you piss off?" taking a moment to catch her breath and weigh her options, "fine, no free coffee this time but you owe me...and you're sharing whatever you're guarding in your pocket because i know it has to be good."

arms up in protection of his head and the cinnamon role he'd purchased tucked safely away in a scrub pocket, javi stumbled hastily out of the café and into the street. just managing to soften the blow of his brushing past an unsuspecting passerby on the way, he immediately flashed his best smile. "ah, sorry!" a momentary pause, the smile still firmly in place. “i would offer to buy you a coffee to apologise but i'm scared if i go back in there it won't be the menu i'm hit with... but something much more substantial."

As long as I can remember I've carried this irrational dread of making a mistake. It's with me all the time. And why on earth I decided to become a doctor where the cost of a mistake is so high.. It's insane.

you're from california. santa barbara. your parents are both surgeons, both their parents are doctors, which of course means....ding ding ding !! you're next.

you've been training for this your whole life, there was no other job option for you. while other kids wanted to be a actresses or marine biologists, astronauts, teachers, you knew you had one job to do. be a surgeon. hell, you were going to bring your parents to work day and watching surgeries since you were ten.

you've been facing the pressure to be the best since you were born, it's nothing new, you only learned how to deal with it as an adult. healthy or not, you deal.

you've been learning everything medical since you were a kid, this stuff comes so easy to you, you always have to be right. you're that annoying intern. you still have stuff to learn AND THATS OKAY.

all of it comes from your family, you like medicine, you like helping people, but you don't need to be perfect. you don't need to be this super doctor or a perfect surgeon. it's okay. you just keep ignoring their calls, they'll go away soon & you'll figure it out soon.

you'll fight for your patients, you'll listen and make sure it's what they want, you're not someone that pushes something they don't want or don't understand. it's about the patient and that's where you don't see eye to eye with your family or your attendings sometimes. not everything needs to be a major surgery.

you're confused as hell but you're trying and putting on a brave face, thinking you know it all..

「 MADELYN CLINE, CIS WOMAN + SHE / HER 」🔬  ‧₊˚  ⋆ ــــــــــﮩ٨ـ did you page BRYNN ROSS from TRAUMA ? they’re the twenty-seven year old NURSE at KINGSLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, they’ve been working here for 5 years. you’ve probably seen them if you’ve caught her standing up for the other nurses when the interns try to boss them around, making a sarcastic comment whenever someone messes up but always holding someones hand through the worst of it, smoke breaks that never last long enough, & telling people what they need to hear with a on her face, the patients that do like them would tell you they are HONEST and RESPECTFUL, but some of them think they’re DEMANDING and MOODY. time is rushing, just go and find them. ⸺

you're a ny girl, born & raised right in queens, a true new yorker, to a single-ish mother, the youngest two.

your father would come in & out of your lives every few years, enough to get your hopes up and kick your mom's weird boyfriend out of the picture. HA joke's on you, he was always gone after a week or two. you always blamed you mom cause who wouldn't at that age when you're too young to know the truth?

an alcoholic father and an absentee mother with her own demons & a string of boyfriends created a loving household. one where it was you & your older brother against the world which was fine with you. you lived in new york city, it wasn't like they were in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. and hey, maybe your dad would come around and take you when he got a new job, at least that's what you told yourself.

the house was filled with lots of fighting, lots of tears, running to the mets stadium just to escape your mom, doing your homework in the stands as you watch a homer.

as soon as you graduated high school, you went to school for nursing. you always had an interest in science & eventually wanted to go to school for medicine but the money wasn't there, there was no way that your after school job was going to pay for that. so nursing school it was.

9 years later and you're still a nurse. are you a little pissed? sure, but you're good, really good. you're good with the patients and you're smart. plus, you can connect with your patients more and who knows where you'd match as a doctor. it's just better this way.

the other nurses are the family you've never had, you get to help the community in a way you never thought possible, you're finally happy, right?
